Augsburg to honor Saugestad on Saturday

Augsburg College will honor former coach and instructor Ed Saugestad '59 with a special celebration on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Kennedy Center.

A celebration will be held in the Jeroy Carlson A-Club Suite (303-305) in the Kennedy Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, following an afternoon of activities at Augsburg, including the men's hockey team's game against Concordia-Wisconsin at 2 p.m. and the men's hockey alumni celebration at 4:30 p.m.

Saugestad coached the Augsburg men's hockey team from 1958 to 1996, finishing his career as one of the winningest coaches in small-college hockey history, with a 503-354-21 record. His Auggies won MIAC titles six straight years (1976-82), qualified for national tournament play 10 times and won the NAIA national championship in 1978, 1981 and 1982.

Saugestad was awarded the American Hockey Coaches Association's John MacInnes Award in 2002 to honor his part in the growth of amateur hockey in the United States, and was named as the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey honoree in 2007. The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference christened its playoff championship trophy as the Ed Saugestad Trophy in 1998. He was inducted into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

In addition to his hockey coaching duties, Saugestad also served on the Augsburg football coaching staff from 1959-84, including two years (1970-71) as head coach. He taught in the Health and Physical Education department throughout his career, and served as the College's men's athletic director from 1981-87.

For more information on the Ed Saugestad celebration on Saturday, contact the Augsburg athletic department at 612-330-1249.

Knitting/Crocheting Donations Needed

Ramsey Middle School students are reading Esperanza Rising, which features themes of immigration and assimilation. In the book some of the characters knit/crochet and the students at Ramsey are asking to learn how. Middle schoolers are ASKING to learn something?

If anyone has an extra skein of yarn and/or knitting needles/crochet hooks that you are willing to donate, please consider doing so. Many of the students involved come from low-income families who cannot afford to spend money on this luxury. Please contact me and I can make sure their teacher gets the supplies.
