Document Shredding

Something to keep in mind when cleaning out old files...Any documents that are non-confidential can be placed in recycling containers located in hallways of each building. However, many of you have documents that are confidential and need to be shredded.

The Facilities Department has scheduled a document shredding company to be on campus Thursday, November 19th. If you have any confidential materials that you wish to be shredded at that time, please box them up and mark the boxes 'to be shredded'. Then, submit a work request to the Facilities Department by Tuesday, November 17th, and we will make arrangements for our staff to pick up these boxes from your office.

If you have any questions, please email Terri at adamsth@augsburg.edu or call x1566.

Metropasses on Sale at Enrollment Service Counters

Metropasses are now available for faculty and staff. At $38.00 per month they are at a substantial discount compared to the normal retail value. Bus fares without discount are $1.75 each way non-rush hour, $2.25 during rush hours and $3.00 for express buses. Even if one only comes to campus 3 times a day the cost of transportation for a month would range from $42 to $72 a month without a discount. If one is a full time commuter coming to campus 5 days a week the Metropass still saves money even if the commuter doesn't use the pass during the summer. Using the pass only 10 months of the year the annual cost averaged for 10 months is $45.60 compared to the per ride cost would range from $94.5 to $162.00.

Order your Metropass card as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition to the new pass. There will be a 2 -3 week delay between the time the application is filled out and the time the new Metropass cards are delivered. Temporary pass cards will be available to allow applicants to continue bus use until their new passes arrive. Fill out a Metropass application at the Enrollment service counters at Sverdrup 100 as soon as possible. All Augsburg employees working 20 hours per week or greater are eligible to participate in the Metropass program. Participants must sign up for the pass for a contract year that begins this September 1st and goes through August 31, 2010. The cost of the pass is $38.00 per month and it will be automatically deducted (pre-tax) from participants pay. Each participant has the opportunity to renew their card during the last month of the contract year.

The Metropass cards are quicker to use on bus and trains and they also eliminate the need to go and purchase a monthly card at the service counter every month. The Metropass cards are good for light rail and buses, every day, all day including trips to some of the outlying suburbs. Riders will have to provide additional cash to the driver for exceptionally long commutes outside the 7 county metro area. Travel using bus companies other than Metro Transit are not included in this program. Participants must agree to participate for the contract year, allow their I.D. picture to be used on the Go-To card and participants must return the card to Human Resources when their employment at the college ends. The cash value cards and monthly passes will still be on sale at the Enrollment counter with the same 50% discount as before. If you need more information please call Tom Ruffaner @ Ext. 1641.

Northstar Commuter Service Begins Monday, Nov. 16

The new Northstar commuter line starts operation on Monday, November 16th with service from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake with stops at Fridley, Coon Rapids, Anoka and Elk River. Payment ranges from $3.25 between stations to $7.00 to go the full distance to Big Lake. Tickets must be bought at the station with a combination of the use of cash, credit card and/or Metropass or Go-to College pass. If using your Metropass or Go-to Pass, they only are good for a value of $3.00 per purchase so additional money will have to be used to purchase a full fare ticket for your destination. You can add funds to your Metropass or Go-To Pass and deduct that amount from the pass as additional payment or you can use cash or a credit card for the additional money needed. Make sure you arrive at your station at least a half hour early the first day to allow time to become familiar with the ticket purchasing. Tickets cannot be bought on-board and if you attempt to ride without a valid ticket you can be fined $180.00. For detailed information about Nortstar schedules and payment instructions go to: http://www.metrotransit.org/Northstar/riding.asp

Augsburg to honor Saugestad on Nov. 21

Augsburg College will honor former coach and instructor Ed Saugestad '59 with a special celebration on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the college's Kennedy Center.

A celebration will be held in the Jeroy Carlson A-Club Suite (303-305) in the Kennedy Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, following an afternoon of activities at Augsburg, including the men's hockey team's game against Concordia-Wisconsin at 2 p.m. and the men's hockey alumni celebration at 4:30 p.m.

Saugestad coached the Augsburg men's hockey team from 1958 to 1996, finishing his career as one of the winningest coaches in small-college hockey history, with a 503-354-21 record. His Auggies won MIAC titles six straight years (1976-82), qualified for national tournament play 10 times and won the NAIA national championship in 1978, 1981 and 1982.

Saugestad was awarded the American Hockey Coaches Association's John MacInnes Award in 2002 to honor his part in the growth of amateur hockey in the United States, and was named as the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey honoree in 2007. The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference christened its playoff championship trophy as the Ed Saugestad Trophy in 1998. He was inducted into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

In addition to his hockey coaching duties, Saugestad also served on the Augsburg football coaching staff from 1959-84, including two years (1970-71) as head coach. He taught in the Health and Physical Education department throughout his career, and served as the college's men's athletic director from 1981-87.
