34th Annual Great American Smokeout

Less smoking leads to more birthdays! Today marks the 34th anniversary of the Great American Smokeout. A day designated to encourage smokers to make a plan to quit smoking or to actually quit. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life - one that can lead to reducing cancer risk and celebrating more birthdays.

When you stop smoking, your body benefits quickly:
* after 20 minutes you blood pressure and pulse are lower;
* after 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal;
* after 24 hours, your risk of a heart attack is lower;
* after 3 days your sense of taste and smell return to normal; and
* after 2 weeks your lung function starts to improve.

With help you are 7 times more likely to successfully stop smoking! Smokers who want to quit can contact the Quitplan Smoking Cessation Center at Smiley's Clinic - 612-333-0770 or check out web resources at quitplan.com
Additional smoking cessation resources can be found on the American Cancer Society Website at www.cancer.org/GreatAmericans.

Help is a powerful thing. Take steps today to plan for your next birthday celebration and many more. If you have additional questions, please call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707.

Tour Norway, June 5-15, 2010

Please join Augsburg's Center for Leadership Studies for an educational and cultural tour to Norway, June 5 – 15, 2010. This specially designed tour is open to the Augsburg community, as well as family members (including children over 12 years) and friends.

The tour includes:
• Five days in Oslo—located on a fjord, surrounded by hills, and full of the excitement of a large, cosmopolitan city. While in Oslo, we will be hosted by Diakonhjemmet University College, one of Augsburg's partner schools. Faculty from Diakonhjemmet will lead three morning sessions that complement our travels.
• A journey westward by motor coach through Kongsberg, the historic Numedal Valley, and Hardangervidda (the mountain plateau home of large reindeer herds) to stay in a charming traditional hotel in Geilo
• A famously scenic train ride to the fjord village of Flåm and a cruise on the Aurlands and Naeroy Fjords
• Two nights in picturesque and historic Bergen on Norway's west coast
• A journey south by motor coach and ferry to Stavanger, designated "European Capital of Culture" for 2008. Stavanger was the main departure point for Norwegian immigrants to America. After an overnight stay, we will depart for home from Stavanger.

Cost: $3799 (includes airfare, accommodations, in-country travel, entrance fees during group excursions, tour guides, workshops at Diakonhjemmet, 15 meals, gratuities, airport taxes, and fuel charges).

We are truly fortunate to partner with Diakonhjemmet University College and CrossingBorders International Group Tours to create a tour that offers a unique perspective on a beautiful and inspiring country.

Register soon to secure your place. (The recent Augsburg-sponsored tour to Italy had a waiting list and some were unable to go because they waited too long to register.) For information, contact Patty Park at 612-330-1150 or parkp@augsburg.edu.

Augsburg to honor Saugestad on Saturday

Augsburg College will honor former coach and instructor Ed Saugestad '59 with a special celebration on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Kennedy Center.

A celebration will be held in the Jeroy Carlson A-Club Suite (303-305) in the Kennedy Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, following an afternoon of activities at Augsburg, including the men's hockey team's game against Concordia-Wisconsin at 2 p.m. and the men's hockey alumni celebration at 4:30 p.m.

Saugestad coached the Augsburg men's hockey team from 1958 to 1996, finishing his career as one of the winningest coaches in small-college hockey history, with a 503-354-21 record. His Auggies won MIAC titles six straight years (1976-82), qualified for national tournament play 10 times and won the NAIA national championship in 1978, 1981 and 1982.

Saugestad was awarded the American Hockey Coaches Association's John MacInnes Award in 2002 to honor his part in the growth of amateur hockey in the United States, and was named as the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey honoree in 2007. The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference christened its playoff championship trophy as the Ed Saugestad Trophy in 1998. He was inducted into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

In addition to his hockey coaching duties, Saugestad also served on the Augsburg football coaching staff from 1959-84, including two years (1970-71) as head coach. He taught in the Health and Physical Education department throughout his career, and served as the College's men's athletic director from 1981-87.

For more information on the Ed Saugestad celebration on Saturday, contact the Augsburg athletic department at 612-330-1249.

Hildebrandt named Academic All-American

Hildebrandt named Academic All-American
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2009/11/18/mhoc111809.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second straight season, Augsburg College men's soccer defender Alex Hildebrandt (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team in men's soccer, this year as a second-team selection.

An accounting/finance major with a 3.83 grade-point average, Hildebrandt was named to the second team in the College Division (non-Division I) on a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Committee. It is the third year in a row that an Augsburg men's soccer player has earned Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA.

The award is the 22nd CoSIDA Academic All-America selection for Augsburg in school history and ninth since 2005. Hildebrandt is just the fifth Augsburg student-athlete to earn multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, joining Ryan Valek (2005-06), Josh Cagle (1999-2000), Scott Hvistendahl (1997-98) and Karen Sterner (1986-87).

Hildebrandt was one of just nine repeat selections among the 33 student-athletes named to the three Academic All-America men's soccer teams this year, and one of just two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes to earn Academic All-America honors.

For Hildebrandt, the honor is the latest in a career filled with major accomplishments. Last week, he earned All-MIAC honors for the second straight year, and earlier this month, he earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team honors for the second straight season. He was also an All-MIAC honorable-mention honoree in 2006, and earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors in both 2008 and 2009.

In 2008, Hildebrandt earned nearly every honor a collegiate soccer player can receive, earning National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division III All-America second-team and NSCAA/Adidas All-Far West Region first-team honors. In addition to his CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine academic honors, he was named to the NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-Region squad and Scholar All-America first team, in addition to earning Academic All-MIAC honors.

This season, Hildebrandt finished with four goals for eight points in 1,464 minutes played (93.0 percent of Augsburg's 1,573 team minutes this season), including two game-winning goals. In his career at Augsburg (71 games), Hildebrandt finished with 14 goals and nine assists for 37 points, including five game-winning goals.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is administered by CoSIDA. Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs, who have already earned Academic All-District first-team honors, are eligible for inclusion on the College Division team. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institutions, have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Academic All-America ballot is voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. Since the program's inception in 1952, COSIDA has bestowed Academic All America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
