Faculty Scholarship Roundtables 2009

Thursday, March 26
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 to 4:40 and 5:00 to 5:40 on Thursday March 26th. Appetizers will be offered during the "intermission".

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues' work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage, www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Metro Senior History Day at Augsburg--TONIGHT

Please join the Augsburg History Society (history club) and the Department of History as we host over 400 students, teachers, and parents for the National History Day in Minnesota's Metro Senior History Day Regional Event, from 4p.m. -10p.m. tonight.

History Day students in grades 6-12 from schools across the Metro area will show off their tabletop exhibits, performances, and documentaries. Over 60 volunteer judges work at the event, choosing the best projects to go on to the State History Day in early May.

The students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics' significance in history, students present their work in a variety of forms. These products are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in a national competition each June held at the University of Maryland at College Park.

The National History Day in Minnesota Program, based at the Minnesota Historical Society, involves over 30,000 students across the state in History Day every year.

Augsburg has hosted this event--one of twelve regional events--every year since 2001.

Consider Eating One Less Meal This Month

March is MN Food Drive month, and Augsburg College's goal is to raise enough funds to provide one month's worth of food to the Brian Coyle Food shelf! We need your help! We are collecting cash/checks to accomplish our goal. Using commodity programs and bulk buying power, money in the food shelf's hand is worth FOUR times as much as our's in a grocery store. Money also allows the food shelf to purchase exactly what the community needs.

Checks can be made payable to Brian Coyle Food shelf. You can also drop off your donation to the Center for Service, Work, & Learning (CSWL) office located in the lower level of Anderson Hall. Please call 612-330-1472 with questions. Center for Service, Work, & Learning, Office of Community Relations and Augsburg Dining thank you in advance for helping us meet our goal!
