Security and Facilities Announcements

Urness/Mortensen exterior inspection

Facilities Management has contracted with Structural Restoration, Inc to inspect the physical condition of the exterior of the Urness and Mortensen residence halls during spring break. While performing this inspection, they will also be removing any material that has come loose due to freeze/thaw cycles over the winter. The inspection is scheduled to take place on March 16th starting at 7:30 A.M. and continuing until complete. March 17th is currently planned as a rain date if needed.

While this work is in progress we ask your cooperation with the following:

Please respect all construction/warning barriers and keep well away from the work area.

Keep all windows closed. Do not have any body part(s) outside the windows at any time.

For your personal privacy, we ask that blinds be kept closed.

If you have any questions regarding this project, please call Dennis Stuckey, Maintenance Manager at Ext. 1717.

CTL Faculty Summer research 2009

FACULTY SUMMER RESEARCH GUIDELINES 2009

DESCRIPTION:

This grant provides support of faculty scholarly activity during the summer months. Scholarship is broadly defined to include research and creative projects that result in disciplinary scholarship, the scholarship of application, interdisciplinary scholarship, and the scholarship of teaching. Examples of previous successful proposals are on file in the Center for Teaching and Learning.

"Scholarship of Teaching" typically goes beyond course development and/or revision and has as its audience other faculty and professionals in the field.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Proposals should show evidence of thorough preparation and meet the following criteria:
• Clear statement of realistic goals and objectives
• Appropriate and detailed project method/plan for achieving the goals and objectives and articulation of the time commitment involved
• Explanation of advance preparation and planning
• Clear description of the project's assessment
• Detailed timeline and budget


FUNDING: Up to $2000 is awarded per grant and 2-3 awards are typically made per year.
These grants are supported by Grangaard Faculty Development Fund and award decisions are made by the Faculty Development Committee. All funds must be used by the end of the fiscal year in which the grant is awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Priority is given to full time tenured and tenure track faculty. Priority is also given to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three year period.

APPLICATION: Please use the Research Application form that is available at the CTL web site www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu

Application Date: March 23, 2009 for the summer 2009. Late applications will not be considered.

Requirements of the grant include:
• Completion of the Center for Teaching and Learning evaluation form and assessment as described in the project application;
• Sharing the results with the Augsburg Community; for example, presentation of a community discussion, Faculty Scholarship Roundtables, or another appropriate and documented venue.

Che buon'idea! Italian conversation on Thursdays

Are you participating in the "Art & Spiritual Practice" study abroad program to Italy this May? Maybe you've just always loved pizza, Michelangelo, gelato or Pavarotti -- and want to learn a little Italian! Doesn't matter why you're interested, but if you are, mark your calendars now:

All interested students, faculty and staff are welcome to join an informal Italian conversation group meeting the rest of this semester. Sessions begin this Thursday, March 5 and will run through April 30.

Public speaking forum - March 7

The Master of Arts in Leadership program (MAL) invites you to join us for a noon forum designed to enhance your professional presentation and public speaking skills, including the effective use of PowerPoint. Wendy Delesha will highlight essential tips and tricks for preparing a winning presentation and delivering a clear, concise, persuasive message that will both inform and influence the audience. The session will include Ten Steps to Success in preparing a presentation and basic Do's and Don'ts to remember when speaking publicly.

The forum will be held on Saturday, March 7 from noon – 1:00 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Center Johnson Conference Room. You are invited to bring your lunch. There is no cost for the event. If you plan to attend, please contact Patty Park at parkp@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1150.

Delesha has extensive experience and training in public speaking and presentation. Many of you know Wendy as a former admissions counselor for MAL and Nursing at Augsburg. She is currently a student in the MAL program and is the assistant program director at Hamline University’s School of Business.

Undergraduate Summer research deadline soon

APPLY NOW FOR 2009 ON-CAMPUS SUMMER RESEARCH!

URGO is now accepting applications for full and part-time research grants for the summer of 2009! To apply, students work with a faculty member to draft a proposal outlining the concept that they plan to research. Undergraduate summer research runs from May 18th-July 24th. Instructional and course design projects 2009

Info sessions for prospective design project proposers. Information / discussion sessions for those considering submitting a proposal for an Instructional and Course Design project will be held at 3:30 PM on Thursday March 5 (Lindell Group Study Room D) and Wednesday March 11 (Lindell 202). Design Project Leaders from 2008-9 will be available during these sessions to take your questions and discuss the design process and the impact it’s had on them as teaching professionals. Instructional and Course Design Proposal Due Dates. Proposals for instructional and Course Design projects for Summer 2009 are due by March 15. See the CTL web site for the Call for Proposals and the proposal cover sheet and format. Prospective proposers are encouraged to attend one of the ICD information sessions on March 5 or March 11 (details in a separate announcement), or to contact Stu Anderson, Asst. Dean's Summer scholarship 2009

Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant
Summer 2009

Purpose

Augsburg values faculty research and creative projects and thus is making available this opportunity to support faculty work. The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects that are nearing completion. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for a faculty member to accelerate completion of a significant project by providing this substantial opportunity.

Description and Eligibility

Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for summer 2009. One grant will be awarded to a faculty member who received tenure prior to the 2008-2009 academic year. One grant will be awarded to a tenure-track faculty member who successfully passed Third-Year Review prior to the 2008-2009 academic year.

Faculty members who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course total in Summer Session.

Application Process

Eligible candidates are asked to submit the Research Application found at www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu

Be sure your information makes clear how receipt of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion; in addition, make explicit the time commitments by you during the summer.

Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2009 and a short final report by Feb 1, 2010.

Application Date: March 23, 2009 for the summer 2009.
Late applications are not considered.

Blood drive walk-ins welcome/needed

Today is the day for the Memorial Blood Center Annual Spring Blood Drive. It will be held in East Commons from 10 - 4 p.m. Maybe you did not get a chance to call ahead for a time slot or stop by while we were tabling recently but you still want to donate blood. Well you can still do that today. There are many open slots available between 10:45 and 11:45 and again this afternoon from 1:45 - 3:30.

We need your donations -- it costs a short amount of your time today but knowing that your donation will be saving lives goes on after your donation. Augsburg College has always done a incredible job with donors so let's continue living up to our high standard.

If you have any questions, please call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707. If you are donating today, please remember to eat a good breakfast and lunch and drink lots of fluids -- water is best. Also bring a photo ID to the East Commons when you come to donate.

Murphy Square submissions due today

Writers and artists: the Murphy Square submission deadline has been extended through TODAY, Wednesday, March 4th.

Murphy Square, Augsburg's literary and art journal, is seeking submissions for the 2009 edition. This is an excellent opportunity to get your work published and be a part of an outstanding Augsburg tradition. All Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit up to five pieces of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or visual art in .doc or .jpg form to murphysquare@gmail.com. Please include your name, submission title, and phone number in your email.

Again, the new submission deadline is TODAY, Wednesday, March 4th.

Reminder for ACNC silent auction - March 7

Augsburg Nursing Department in collaboration with Central Lutheran Church supports and runs a Nursing Center that provides basic health services to persons who are homeless in the community.

The Nursing Center officially opened in 1993 with two objectives; to provide free health service to under-served people, and to provide the opportunity to nursing students and faculty to explore nursing practice.

The Nursing Center is going strong.

In order to increase their hours of service and meet the increased needs of the people who come through their doors, on Saturday March 7, 2009 the first annual fundraiser for the Nursing Center will be held in the Oren Gateway Lobby from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Many fabulous items will be available for you to purchase. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Nursing Center.

Over 50 fabulous items have been donated by local businesses and friends of the Nursing Center. Examples include: Twins, Timberwolves & Wild tickets; Minnesota Orchestra, Illusion Theater, and The Guthrie tickets; Gift certificates for restaurants Joe's Garage, Rice Paper, McCormick and Schmicks; Bryant Lake Bowling Party, passes to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, picture framing, handmade items and more!

Mark your Calendars. Bring your friends and family. Help make the Nursing Centers first fundraiser a success to continue to help and serve people who are homeless in our community.

Donate to abused women and children

For thousands of women and children, home can be frightening, lonely and for many it is a very dangerous place. The Lewis House, located in Eagan, is dedicated to helping these women and children find safety and get them back on their feet.The Lewis House provides shelter, food, daycare and education about safe relationships for women and children who seek their services. To support these women and children, a few students from Augsburg College will be running a donation drive. We will be collecting items from now until the first week in April, at which time we will deliver all donated items to the Lewis House and help pass things out to the women and children.

Items the Lewis House needs are:
bath sized towels
wash cloths
twin size sheets/comforters
pillowcases
diapers
infant formula - all varieties
baby bottles/nipples
craft supplies (markers, crayons, construction paper, special kits)
school supplies (notebooks, folders, back packs)
educational toys, puzzles, videos and learning games
toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss
old cell phones with chargers
women and youth clothing (any age, gently used or new)

We will be setting up a table in Christensen to collect items and will be available to answer any questions a few times in the coming weeks. People can also drop off items at the Enrollment Center.

Confidential eating disorder screenings

The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion will be holding an Eating Disorder Screening Day on Thursday, March 5th. The confidential screening consists of a brief screening inventory and a brief discussion with one of the CCHP counselors (it should take about 20 minutes total). If you are concerned about yourself, or about someone you love, feel free to stop by anytime between 11am and 2pm on Thursday, March 5th. The CCHP House is located on 21st Avenue South (across from the back/west side of the library).

If you prefer to do an online screening, there is an anonymous screening test available through the CCHP web site. Just click on https://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/welcome.asp and then select the "eating disorders" self-screening test.

Counselors at CCHP are always available to meet with students who have concerns about eating or body image, or are worried about someone they care about. Just call x1707 for a confidential appointment with one of our professional mental health counselors.

We meet every Thursday from 11:00 - 12:30 on the 2nd floor of the Christensen Center, in the Riverside Room. Come for 10 mins. or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Senior English Majors:

Are you interested in reading something you have written while here at Augsburg? The English Department will be having an "open book reading" this spring. The English professors are working with us on creating an event where we could share our writings with family, faculty and friends. Please reply to either one of us if you would like to read some of your work.

The reading will take place April 17th and would be followed with a reception, including dessert and thoughtful conversation with friends, family and faculty. Local business in a big box/online world - Today

All are invited to attend a panel discussion "Local business in a Big Box/Online World" this Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. in the Marshall Room, Christensen Center.

"Starved" - Film on eating disorder recovery

Come see a film on eating disorder recovery at a brown-bag lunch sponsored by the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion on Friday, March 6th from noon to 1pm in the Century Room of the Christensen Center.

"Starved" is a short documentary film by Daria Matza that follows five women with varying experiences of disordered eating (anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating and exercise addiction), and their paths to recovery. Experts like Anita Johnston, Mary Taylor and Geneen Roth talk about the meaning and function of eating disorders and the gifts of recovery. "Starved" provides a mental, emotional, and spiritual lens into this pervasive and devastating issue. Q&A after the film will be led by Beth Carlson of the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion.

Presented by Counseling & Health Promotion as part of Body Peace: Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

Keeping Track of Auggies

English majors present

The English Department commends the following students for presenting outstanding papers and creative work at the annual ACTC English Majors’ Conference at the College of St. Catherine on Friday, 27 February: Bethany Thompson in British Literature, Jenae Opitz in American Literature, Amanda Symes in Multicultural/World Literature, Jessica Fanaselle in Theory/Media, and Kayla Skarbakka in Creative Writing. Each panel included student presenters from all five colleges and questions and comments from ACTC faculty and students. Augsburg's representatives acquitted themselves handsomely.

Speech team has two award-winners

Congratulations to Bethany Thompson and Brett Shay, who were award-winners in persuasive speaking at Tuesday's Twin Cities Forensic League (TCFL) speech tournament. Bethany placed 3rd out of 31 speakers in the persuasive speaking event, while Brett finished 6th. The TCFL is comprised of 18 schools throughout Minnesota, western Wisconsin, and northern Iowa.
