Faculty scholarship roundtables 2009

Faculty Scholarship Roundtables 2009

Thursday 26th March
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 to 4:40 and 5:00 to 5:40 on Thursday March 26th. Appetizers will be offered during the "intermission."

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues' work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL web page, www.augsburg.edu/ctl We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13th

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Mind opener: Immigrant students and higher education

Minnesota has long been recognized for its well-educated, high-quality workforce, but current trends threaten that reputation. Minnesota's workforce is shrinking relative to the size of its population, and too few Minnesota students are graduating from higher education to fill the gap.

Because of predicted job growth and Baby Boomers' retirements, the number of jobs in Minnesota that will require some post-secondary education is projected to grow significantly in coming years. At the same time, the number of students graduating from high school is declining. The number of immigrant students in Minnesota, however, is growing. To meet the coming economic demand, Minnesota will need more immigrant students to complete some form of higher education.

Over 2007 and 2008, the Citizens League's study Committee on Immigration and Higher Education drew up recommendations to address this need. Please join this Mind Opener event to discuss what students, families, schools, government, and all of us should do to reduce the barriers to higher education for immigrant students.

Guest speakers include:

Matt Musel, member of the study committee, development officer for the University of Minnesota, and volunteer who works with college-age Latino students,

Kyle Uphoff, Regional Analysis and Outreach Manager at the Dept. of Employment and Economic Development,

Juventino Meza, student at Augsburg College,

James Worlobah, co-chair of the study committee and budget analyst at Augsburg College,

Amanda Ziebell-Finley, member of the study committee and program associated at the Minnesota College Access Network.

This event will be held at the Wilder Foundation located at 451 Lexington Parkway North in Saint Paul on Friday, February 27, 2009. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and the event runs from 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. You may also register on-line at http://www.citizensleague.org/events.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Cass Dalgish Presents at AWP

On Saturday, 14 February, at the annual meeting of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs in Chicago, Augsburg English Professor Cass Dalglish, along with Heid Erdrich, Roseann Lloyd, and JoAnne Growney, presented "Being and Becoming Translators."

These four poets — working with Norwegian, Ojibwe, cuneiform, and mathematics — discussed the task of translation. In the program, Professor Dalglish and her colleagues note that Walter Benjamin suggests that "the translator 'liberate(s) the language imprisoned in a work,' but it is not just language that is set free. The translator is released as well, let loose to riff on the multiplicities of a text word, sign, and number. In this process, both poem and translator leave what they have been and become something/someone new."

Auggie Athletics

Auggie men's hoops ends year in MIAC playoffs

Men's Basketball 2/25/09 -- MIAC Playoff Semifinals -- Bethel 70, Augsburg 59
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/mbasket/0809statistics/022509bethel.html

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (2/25/09) -- Augsburg College was led by 16 points from David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS), but it wasn't enough as Augsburg dropped a 70-59 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball playoff semifinal game to Bethel University on Wednesday night at Bethel's Robertson Center. Augsburg finishes its season with a record of 15-12 overall, its best overall record since the 1999-2000 season.

Augsburg was led by Olson's 16 points, three rebounds and one steal. Olson's steal moves him into 10th place on the Augsburg single-season steal record list with 44 steals this season. Jon Cassens (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Nate Alm (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) also scored in double figures for the Auggies. Cassens put up 15 points and a game-high five steals, while Alm finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

With the win, Bethel (20-6 overall) moves on to the MIAC championship game to take on the No. 1-ranked team in the Division III national rankings, the University of St. Thomas, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at UST's Schoenecker Arena. The Royals were led by the duo of Tim Madson (SR, Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) and Mike Moberg (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Maple Grove HS). Madson posted a game-high 29 points and collected seven rebounds, while Moberg finished with the only double-double of the night, recording 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams traded baskets for the opening minutes and were locked up at 11-11 six minutes into the action. Augsburg grabbed its first lead of the game, a 14-13 advantage, off a free-throw by Olson at the 12:20 mark. The Royals used an 8-0 run over a four-minute span to grab their largest lead of the half at 28-21. Augsburg countered with a 7-0 run to end the half, cutting the Bethel lead to 31-30 as the teams headed to the locker room.

Bethel used a 7-2 run over the opening four-and-a-half minutes of action to build a six-point lead. Augsburg rallied back and cut the lead to 40-39 off a jumper by Cassens at the 13:42 mark. The Royals nailed a three-pointer with just under nine minutes to play to take a seven-point advantage, but on the very next possession, Olson answered with a three-pointer of his own to cut the lead to 48-44. Bethel continued its hot shooting over the next few minutes, but Augsburg was able to cut the Royal lead to six with 4:09 left to play. That was as close as the Auggies would get, as Bethel converted its free throws down the home stretch and was able to hang on for the win.

For the game, both teams shot an identical 34 percent (20-of-58) from the floor. The difference in the game came down to rebounding and free-throw shooting. Bethel claimed a 43-27 advantage on the boards and was able to convert on 25-of-29 from the charity stripe, while the Auggies were only able to hit 14-of-20.
