Security and Facilities Announcements

Building Hours Over Spring Break

Spring break is starts Monday, March 16 and continues to Friday, March 20. While Augsburg remains open throughout break, Public Safety will secure most buildings at 5 p.m. OGC will remain open until at least 6:30 p.m. and often later for scheduled events.

Buildings with scheduled events, such as MBA cohort meetings, will remain open for the event. On Friday, March 20, all buildings will be open as usual for WEC, MAE, MAL, MAN, and MSW classes.

Please note that the Library and Athletics publish their own buildings schedules. Those facilities will open and close according to their published schedules.

If the space you need is locked, and you have a legitimate reason to be in there, please call x1717 and an officer will do their best to assist you. Please have photo ID and show it to the officer. Some officers will be working different shifts over the break and may not have had the opportunity to meet you.

Teaching and Learning

Would you Like to be Published?

Do you have an academic paper you're particularly proud of? It might be worth even more than the grade you received. The Augsburg Honors Review wants to publish your work. All you have to do is submit it!

What to Submit:
We will consider papers from all disciplines that successfully articulate an original and compelling thesis.

Why Submit?
Being a published author is one of the best ways to demonstrate your writing skills to graduate schools, professional schools, and employers.

How to Submit:
Please send your work to review@augsburg.edu and include the following information:

-- The first and last names of all authors and faculty advisors,
-- Your anticipated graduation date,
-- A reliable way to contact you other than your college-provided email address,
-- The name of the institution where your research was conducted (if other than Augsburg), and
-- The title of your paper.

We prefer Microsoft Word format (.doc) for all attachments.

The priority deadline to submit your work for the 2010 publication is April 20, 2009.

What is the Augsburg Honors Review?
The Augsburg Honors Review is an interdisciplinary journal exhibiting outstanding work by undergraduate students. The goal of the AHR is to give students the opportunity to participate in scholarly conversations within their disciplines and to expose them to the dialogue between a journal and a contributor in editing an article for publication.

For more information, please contact Shawn Boonstra (boonstra@augsburg.edu).

Instructional and Course Design 2009

Instructional and Course Design Summer Stipends
Call for Proposals - Summer 2009

The Instructional and Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during Summer 2009 and completed by the end of Fall term 2009. Proposals are Due March 15 and funding decisions will be made by March 25. Faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit.
Program Description.
Funding levels are intended to provide a realistic alternative to teaching summer courses in order to re-direct faculty effort to design questions and have a direct impact on the effectiveness of mainline academic year courses. The program supports both design-based critique and revision of existing courses or programs and design-based creation of new courses or programs. The stipend amount is $4000 and the expected time commitment during the summer is one full-time month equivalent.
Submission, Selection Process, and Selection Criteria
You are encouraged to attend one of the two Design Proposal Guidance sessions offered on Mar 5 (Lindell Group Study Room D) and Mar 11 (Lindell 202) featuring some of the 2008-09 Design Project Leaders. Proposals should be submitted directly to the Asst. Director for IC&D as Microsoft WORD 2004 files attached to an e-mail 'cover letter' message. The e-mail address is:
anderstu@augsburg.edu
Proposals are due by March 15, 2009 and should follow the requested format to facilitate evaluation and turnaround. They will be evaluated by the IC&D committee composed of the Asst. Director of CTL for IC&D, a member of the IT staff, a member of the library staff, and a representative from CFD. Decisions will be made by March 25.

Projects are selected on the basis of the overall impact of the proposed student learning improvements, including the need for the project, the significance of the proposed improvements.
Project Execution and Compensation.
Kickoff meeting. Awardees will meet with the Asst. Director for IC&D and each other during April before commencing work on the project as well as while the work is progressing over the summer. The purpose of the initial meetings is to clarify the expectations of the design process (working from learning objectives to evidence to assessments to choice of instruction) as it relates to each particular project, set timetables for subsequent gatherings and communication during the project, and identify fruitful connections to design and resource expertise within the library, IT, or other areas.

Communication during the project. During the project work period, the awardee will maintain communication with the Asst. Director and others as agreed upon in the initial meeting to report progress and acquire assistance with the design effort.

Final Report. After the project is completed, the awardee will prepare and submit a written report that summarizes the results the work, focusing principally on extent to which the learning objectives that drove the design process were achieved as well as the effectiveness of the IC&D process in achieving these results. In addition, the report should include a portfolio of all materials whose modification (before and after versions) or creation resulted from the project. Specifics on report format and content will be discussed during the project period. Finally, participants are expected to serve as resources in discussions for the benefit of others interested in undertaking design projects.

Stipend Disbursement. Release of stipend funds will occur in two parts: half to be released after successful initial meetings and the remaining half released after the final report is received.

Faculty Scholarship Roundtables 2009

Thursday, March 26
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery* Oren Atrium

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience, 4-4:40 and 5-5:40 on Thursday, March 26. Appetizers will be offered during the "intermission".

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues' work in the second slot. We hope many faculty members, chairs, staff, and administrators will support their department colleagues by attending the sessions. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. In particular, faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as those who received research and travel grants are asked to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage, www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 14-16 different presentation (6-8 different faculty members each round).

Abstracts due March 13

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Donate to Abused Women and Children

For thousands of women and children, home can be frightening, lonely and for many it is a very dangerous place. The Lewis House, located in Eagan, is dedicated to helping these women and children find safety and get them back on their feet. The Lewis House provides shelter, food, daycare and education about safe relationships for women and children who seek their services. To support these women and children, a few students from Augsburg College will be running a donation drive. We will be collecting items from now until the first week in April, at which time we will deliver all donated items to the Lewis House and help pass things out to the women and children.

Items the Lewis House needs are:
bath sized towels
wash cloths
twin size sheets/comforters
pillowcases
diapers
infant formula - all varieties
baby bottles/nipples
craft supplies (markers, crayons, construction paper, special kits)
school supplies (notebooks, folders, back packs)
educational toys, puzzles, videos and learning games
toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss
old cell phones with chargers
women and youth clothing (any age, gently used or new)

We will be setting up a table in Christensen to collect items and will be available to answer any questions a few times in the coming weeks. People can also drop off items at the Enrollment Center.

Please contact Ashle with questions at neunsing@augsburg.edu.

Please reply to either one of us if you would like to read some of your work.

The reading will take place April 17 and will be followed with a reception, including dessert and thoughtful conversation with friends, family and faculty. This is an optional method of paying for your books by charging the money to your student account. This service is intended for students who need to use their financial aid money to purchase books. If you do not use financial aid, it would be best to pay for your books directly at B&N.

If you have third-party funding, please do not use this form and rather contact the bookstore directly to arrange for correct account and invoice processing.

There are no bookstore accounts for any summer classes, so hold on to that credit refund money and plan ahead!

Foodless Food Drive Needs Your Help

How can you get $4 worth of value from your $1 instantly? Give it to those who really need it. For those that have already contributed, we thank you! In the first 10 days Augsburg College has collected one-third of our goal.

March is MN Food Drive month, and Augsburg College's goal is to raise enough funds to provide one month's worth of food to the Brian Coyle Food shelf. We are collecting cash/checks to accomplish our goal. Rather than collecting food, we are hosting this FoodLess FoodDrive - using commodity programs and bulk buying power, money in the food shelf's hand is worth FOUR times as much as our's in a grocery store. Money also allows the food shelf to purchase exactly what the community needs.

Checks can be made payable to Brian Coyle Food shelf. You can also drop off your donation to the Center for Service, Work, & Learning (CSWL) office located in the lower level of Anderson Hall. Please call 612-330-1472 with questions. Center for Service, Work, & Learning, Office of Community Relations and Augsburg Dining thank you in advance for helping us meet our goal!
