Teaching and Learning

Vocatio Chapel with Aimee K. Bryant

Augsburg College continues the Vocatio Chapel Series Wednesday, November 12 at 10:20 a.m. with actress, singer, and performer, Aimee K. Bryant in the Chapel.

Steeped in gospel harmonies and black consciousness, the influence of the city and its music resonate in the poetry and delivery of Aimee's compositions. Aimee holds a B.F.A. with a concentration in musical Theatre from Howard University, also a Mecca of artistic accomplishment. While in D.C. she sung with the Howard Gospel Choir and did some background gigging for gospel heavy hitters Yolanda Adams, LaShun Pace, and BeBe and CeCe Winans. Then St. Paul came calling; promising full time acting work when Aimee graduated. Aimee has been filling the short gaps between plays with on-camera, voice over and jingle work, as well as gigging and recording with other musicians and spoken word artists. Her work is featured on the albums of Truth Maze, Sha Cage, Nazirah P. Mickey, and local folk legend Larry Long. Aimee has also become the voice of Yohannes Tona Band, an afro-funk jazz ensemble that doubles as her band. Still, while acting and gigging on stages across the country and landing national commercials and jingles she was also turning her experiences into poetry and melody.

Interested students, faculty, and staff are also invited to lunch with Aimee at 11 a.m. in the Riverside Room. To RSVP for the lunch, please send an email to Ross Murray at murray@ausgburg.edu.

Nov. is National Native American Heritage Month

National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month - A Brief History

What began at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the First Americans made to the establishment and growth of the United States has resulted in the month of November being designated for that purpose.

Early Proponents

One of the early proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian who was the Director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, New York. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the "First Americans," and for three years the Scouts adopted such a day. In 1915, at the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence, Kansas, a plan celebrating American Indian Day was formally approved. The Association directed its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, to call upon the country to set aside a day of recognition. Rev. Coolidge issued a proclamation on September 28, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of May as American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of American Indians as citizens.

The year before this proclamation was issued, Red Fox James, a Blackfeet Indian, rode horseback from state to state, seeking approval for a day to honor American Indians. On December 14, 1915, Red Fox James presented the endorsements of 24 state governments to the White House. There is no record, however, of such a national day being proclaimed.

State Celebrations

The first American Indian Day to be celebrated in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it continues to be a day we observe without any legal recognition as a national holiday.

Heritage Months

In 1990 President George Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 as "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations have been issued each year since 1994.

National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month is celebrated to recognize the intertribal cultures and to educate the public about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of the American Indian and Alaska Native people. Scholarship for Women

Soroptimist International of the Americas is a volunteer service organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. (Please visit www.soroptimist.org <http://www.soroptimist.org/> to learn more.) Each year, more than $1 million is provided in cash grants to women in need.

The Women's Opportunity Awards give women financial support to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. Eligible applicants must be women who provide the primary financial support for their families and who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program. The women may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills training, including tuition, books, childcare and transportation.

The program begins on the local club level, where grant amounts vary. Soroptimist International of Greater Minneapolis awards a minimum of $400, depending on fund-raising proceeds, and historically has given $500 or greater. The local honoree is then eligible for regional grants of $5,000 (first place) and $3,000 (second place). The first place regional winners then become candidates for one of three $10,000 awards.

Attached are the application forms and an information sheet with eligibility requirements, etc. Please note the application deadline is December 15, 2008. Completed applications should be mailed to me at the address given below. The mailing information is also included on the information form.

Please post or forward this information to potential applicants and/or colleagues who might know of possible candidates for the Women's Opportunity Award.

Thank you for your assistance. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information.

Available performance dates are:
November 8 at 7 p.m. and November 8 and 9 at 2 p.m.

In this poignant and enchanting play, Sarah Ruhl (Pulitzer Prize nominee and MacArthur genius grant winner) presents her contemporary take on the ancient Greek tale of Eurydice and Orpheus. We enter a surreal world, as lush and limpid as a dream, where both author and audience swim in the magical and thrilling flow of the unconscious. --The New Yorker

Tickets are now on sale for

$5 for non-Augsburg students and
