Community Organizing -- Telling Your Story, Nov. 20

All student leaders, activists, and allies are invited to a session in one of the skills needed for faith-based community organizing; I Love to Tell the Story. Stories are very powerful vehicles for transmitting moral or practical points, for revealing our moral values and for engaging others in causes important to us. But, powerful as stories are on their own, they benefit from being told in a way that increases their impact.

A public story links how you became the person you are, how the community or organization you are part of came to be, the people they are, and the challenges–choices–outcomes facing those people, that community, to achieve their goals.Intuitive as this may sound since it starts with something we are all experts on (ourselves), doing it requires training and practice to arrive at stories that are specific, are only sufficiently detailed for understanding, that tap into emotion, include challenges-choices-outcomes, offer hope and communicate our values.

Also part of the training is how to listen, how to help others hone their stories down so the story connects the dots. In this way, not only are you trained to have the stories you tell have the impact you desire, you are trained to help others achieve the same skill. Active listening and good coaching are important in this regard.

This strategy has been used successfully by Lutherans Concerned/North America in their work for full inclusion in the Lutheran Church. Come to train with Emily Eastwood, Executive Director of Lutherans Concerned/North America. This will be a practical workshop, where people will practice telling their story with a partner and for a group.

Come and join us on Thursday, November 20 at 5:30 in OGC 113. Email questions to murray@augsburg.edu.

Veterans Appreciation/Reception Nov. 13

Augsburg College is hosting a military/veterans appreciation reception again this year on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 4-6 p.m. The event will take place in the Marshall Room, which is on the first floor of the Christensen Center. We have chosen to hold the reception a day different from the actual Veterans Day so as not to conflict with other official and family activities that may already be in place.

Food and refreshments will be provided.

This reception is for currently serving military members, family of currently serving military members, and veterans who are Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. This is a great opportunity to meet other military/veterans on campus and for the college to honor your service.

There will be a short program at approximately 4:30 p.m. After introductions, the President of the College, Paul Pribbenow, will say a few words. Duane Bauer from the MN Dept of Veteran Affairs will attend, but will not arrive until approximately 5pm.

Please share this invitation with other military members and veterans at Augsburg.

Tickets on Sale Now for 'Eurydice'

Tickets are now on sale for Eurydice, written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Martha Johnson.
Available performance dates are:
November 8 at 7 p.m. and November 8 and 9 at 2 p.m.

In this poignant and enchanting play, Sarah Ruhl (Pulitzer Prize nominee and MacArthur genius grant winner) presents her contemporary take on the ancient Greek tale of Eurydice and Orpheus. Written after her father's death, Ruhl meditates with delicacy and insight on Eurydice's painful decision whether to remain with her father in the Underworld, or to return with her love Orpheus to the land of the living. We enter a surreal world, as lush and limpid as a dream, where both author and audience swim in the magical and thrilling flow of the unconscious. --The New Yorker

Tickets are now on sale for
$10 for General Public
$8 for ACTC faculty and staff
$5 for non-Augsburg students and
$2 for Augsburg students and children under 12
All Augsburg students need to bring their student ID.

To make a reservation, please call 612-330-1257

Thanks to the President

With this message I risk being labeled a brown-noser, but gaining favoritism with President Pribbenow is not my goal (after all, how could I be more favored than I am). Please note the sarcasm.

Yesterday at the all-hands meeting I missed the opportunity -- or more honestly, was too intimidated to take the opportunity -- to thank President Pribbenow for reinstating our holiday vacation. This gesture goes a long way in building the morale of the staff and making us feel valued for our work. I know we all cherish those days off around the holidays and are elated to have them back.

With gratitude,

Dixie and many others
