Portfolio Workshop for CTP Reviews

Faculty members looking ahead to CTP reviews are invited to attend a
portfolio preparation workshop. Participants will see and discuss
samples of CTP portfolios and learn about options for online
portfolio access. This workshop will be repeated in early December.

Please join us for a reading and celebration of Cass Dalglish’s new book, Humming the Blues, on Tuesday, December 2, 3-4:30 p.m. in the Augsburg College Bookstore. All are welcome!
"And when you squat with your weaving twisting and untwisting the threads of life, you harvest spirit, you reap breath,
you cradle souls at your breast, you let the flaws unravel. Your hands speak
in metaphor, they reach, they tell stories, they reach again, they want it all,
and there you are, counting, counting to seven, counting all there is; hours, days,
every moment squeezed in your fist, chained to your wrist bones, the universe tied
by silky cords to your mask."
In this work, Cass Dalglish interprets the cuneiform signs of Enheduanna, a powerful Sumerian ruler in 2350 BCE. "Nin-me-sar-ra" - the first signed poetry in history - begs the deity Inanna (who entered the underworld and returned) for help overcoming a usurper. Adopting a jazz aesthetic, Dalglish improvises on her translations, re-examining the cuneiform through feminist lenses. Giving fresh interpretations to the originals, these poems form rhythmic riffs - like jazz musical improvisations - that carry the reader back to the lands of ancient Iraq during the time when gods were women.
Faculty/Staff Travel Applications Notice
The Committee on Faculty Development reminds faculty and staff that requests for professional travel awards to conferences must be submitted 30 days prior to the conference. Beginning December 1, 2008 late applications will not be considered for funding.

Winona LaDuke Speaking on Campus Next Thursday
Please join us for the Fourth Annual Koryne Horbal Lecture, featuring internationally renowned activist and writer, Winona LaDuke, who will be giving a convocation lecture on Thursday, November 20, in Foss Chapel from 11-12. Immediately following her talk will be a book signing in the Foss Atrium.
Special opportunity for students: There will be a student discussion and Q&A time with Ms. LaDuke later that afternoon, from 2:10-3, in the Marshall Room. All are welcome!
Winona LaDuke works on issues of sustainable develop.m.ent, renewable energy, food systems, and environmental justice with Indigenous communities. She is the founder of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, one of the largest reservation-based nonprofit organizations in the country. In this project, she also continues national and international work to protect Indigenous plants and heritage foods from patenting and genetic engineering. The author of five books, including Recovering the Sacred, All our Relations, and a novel, Last Standing Woman, she is widely recognized for her work on environmental and human rights issues.
Soup, Gender & Sexuality: What is Intersex?

Soup, Gender & Sexuality is an ongoing series presented by LGBTQIA Services. This month's topic will be "What is Intersex?". Participants will learn about what intersex means, its history, its impact on culture, types of intersex conditions, and what intersex advocates are saying today. Free soup, snacks, and beverages to all those in attendance - the event is free and open to the public.
Feminist Film Friday: "The Price of Pleasure"
Every one is invited to this month's Women's Resource Center Feminist Film Friday. This month we will be showing the film "The Price of Pleasure: Pornography, Sexuality, and Relationships." The showing of the film will be accompanied by specials guests Robert Jensen, anti-pornography and anti-prostitution activist and writer, and Renegade Evolution, sex worker, sex workers' rights activist, and blogger. Discussion with special guests will follow the film.
"The Price of Pleasure" film and discussion will be on Friday, November 21 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in Science 123.

Recommended especially for Permanent Residents, Refugees and Asylees who will study abroad.
Attorneys, Leo Epee (Alumnus '99) and Keillen Curtis of Curtis, Epee and El, LLC have generously offered to lead a workshop for students who are permanent residents (especially those without passports), refugees and asylees who would like to learn about the process to obtain travel documents (advanced parole) and/or citizenship.

Gerda Mortensen Celebration
On Monday, November 17 Mortensen Hall will be sponsoring a day of activities set up in remembrance of Gerda Mortensen, who the building is named after. The day is designed to appreciate Gerda’s impact on Augsburg and the surrounding community!
On Monday, Gracia Grindal has been invited to speak at chapel about Gerda Mortensen. During community time after chapel there will be refreshments and a time to share stories about Gerda Mortensen’s life and achievements. Chapel will begin at its normal time of 10:20 a.m., with the community time to follow.
Later in the day from 5:00-8:00 p.m., an event will be hosted in Mortensen Hall that will be a celebration of Gerda. The celebration will include cake, ice cream, and opportunities to participate in activities involving civic engagement and awareness. All are welcome to attend and we hope to see you there!
Please help us in celebrating Gerda Mortensen and her impact on the rich history here at Augsburg.

New Rochester Mileage Reimbursement
Effectively immediately, the flat rate for Rochester mileage reimbursement will be decreased from the current $100 to $85. The increase was to respond to the significant increase in gas prices which are now substantially lower and warrant a decrease in the flat fee.

Greetings from the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs!
The Institute's Master of Science (MS) and Master of Public Policy (MPP) Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy (STEP) program. My colleagues and I are hosting an information session for prospective MS and MPP-STEP students on Wednesday, November 19 at 5 p.m. Please share this information with your students. If you and/or any of your colleagues would like to attend to learn more about the program to share with your students, you are more than welcome.
The MS program prepares students with science and engineering backgrounds and the MPP-STEP program prepares students with any undergraduate background to assume roles in public policy develop.m.ent, implementation, management, and leadership. For example, students are taught to analyze and design policies for appropriate promotion and oversight of science and technology regionally, nationally, and internationally. They explore the interactions between science & technology and society in interdisciplinary ways, with a problem-oriented (e.g. climate change) approach.
The information sessions will take place in room 205 Humphrey Center. Beverages and pizza will be served. Faculty, current students, and admissions staff will speak briefly and answer questions.

Veterans/Military Appreciation Reception - Nov. 13
Augsburg College is hosting a military/veterans appreciation reception on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 4-6 p.m. The event will take place in the Marshall Room, which is on the first floor of the Christensen Center.
Food and refreshments will be provided.
This reception is for currently serving military members, family of currently serving military members, and veterans who are Augsburg students, staff, and faculty. This is a great opportunity to meet other military/veterans on campus and for the college to honor your service.
There will be a short program at approximately 4:30 p.m. After introductions, the President of the College, Paul Pribbenow, will say a few words. Duane Bauer from the MN Dept of Veteran Affairs will attend, but will not arrive until approximately 5 p.m.

Free Fan Bus for Football Game TONIGHT
There will be a free one-way shuttle bus to the Metrodome tonight. Augsburg Football takes on Bethel at 7:00 p.m. The Bus will leave from the front of Melby Hall at 6 and 6:30 p.m. Go Auggies!
Auggie football at the Metrodome TONIGHT
Augsburg College will "host" Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest TONIGHT (Thursday 11/13) at 7 p.m. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Free parking is available on the Metrodome upper lot, adjacent to the Vikings' ticket office. Lot entrance is off of 11th Avenue South, near the intersection with 5th Street South. Metrodome entry and tickets will be at Gate D, adjacent to the upper parking lot (above the loading dock). Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets will be handled just like a regular Augsburg home game. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for students. Augsburg, A-Club and MIAC passes will be accepted. All Augsburg students, faculty and staff get into any Augsburg regular-season home game free with ID. All fan seating will be on the east site (football press box side).
If you can't make it to the game, you can listen to the action live online, through Augsburg's live audio webcast (Stretch Internet). Go to http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/liveaudio/ for the webcast tonight.
The game will mark the 19th season in a row that Augsburg has played a football game at the Metrodome. Augsburg will be making its 22nd football appearance at the Metrodome this season since 1983, the most of any MIAC school. The Auggies have a 8-13 record in games played at the Metrodome and a 9-13 record all-time in games played indoors. Augsburg also won an NCAA Division III playoff game over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., in 1997.
Men's soccer NCAA viewing party TODAY
Come watch the Augsburg men's soccer team battle Whitworth University (Wash.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III championships! We will be showing a live feed from the game in Spokane, Wash., on a big screen in the Christensen Center Student Lounge. The game starts Thursday at 3 p.m. We will be serving popcorn and pop. Come wearing your maroon and help us cheer on the Auggie men's soccer team.
