Student of Color Study Abroad Scholarship

Students of color with financial and academic need are invited to apply for the Student of Color Study Abroad Scholarship sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood/Thrivent.

Eligibility Requirements
The following criteria must be met:
The applicant is an undergraduate student of color
The applicant demonstrates financial need
The applicant demonstrates academic need (credits needed for graduation)
The applicant must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
The applicant will apply and be accepted to participate on an eligible Augsburg Faculty-led Program in Summer of 2009.

Eligible Programs:
1. Ancient and Modern Egyptian Identity: Egypt

2. Biodiversity and Environmental Politics: New Zealand/Cook Islands

Post-Election Discussion TODAY at Noon

Please join us for a discussion of the historic results of 2008 Election and the prospects for the Obama Presidency and the 111th Congress (while we await the final results of the Minnesota Senate race). Faculty from the Political Science Department will give their initial reactions and reflections on the campaign, election, and the morning after, and then open things up for discussion. Women's Resource Center Brown Bag Lunch

Please join the Women's Resource Center for our third brown bag lunch session this semester. On Tuesday, Nov. 11, from noon - 1 p.m., we will be discussing anti-violence and violence prevention on campus with a focus on sexual assault. CTL Night at the Theatre

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the Nov. 8, 2008, 7 p.m. performance of Eurydice directed by Martha Johnson. According to Martha Johnson, Sarah Ruhl is one of the "hottest" playwrights in America at the moment, and this play in particular has been a hit in New York and at several other theaters as well. It's a contemporary take on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but from Eurydice's point of view. We're really lucky to have been able to obtain the rights to the play, and I'm pretty sure we're the first college or University in the Twin Cities to produce it." One reviewer stated, " [The Orpheus/Eurydice] tale. . .is an enduringly appealing story of the tremendous power of love, and its fragility. . . .The story’s scope is widened to embrace not just romantic love—which comes in for some gentle mockery—but also the bond between a father and a daughter, depicted here as a force as elemental and sustaining as that other, oft-rhapsodized kind. . . .[Eurydice] is like a dream in which strange events take on unaccountably powerful meaning.”

Vocatio Chapel with Aimee K. Bryant

Augsburg College continues the Vocatio Chapel Series Wednesday, November 12 at 10:20 with actress, singer, and performer, Aimee K. Bryant.

Steeped in gospel harmonies and black consciousness, the influence of the city and its music resonate in the poetry and delivery of Aimee’s compositions. Aimee holds a B.F.A. with a concentration in musical Theatre from Howard University, also a Mecca of artistic accomplishment. While in D.C. she sung with the Howard Gospel Choir and did some background gigging for gospel heavy hitters Yolanda Adams, LaShun Pace, and BeBe and CeCe Winans. Then St. Paul came calling; promising full time acting work when Aimee graduated. Aimee has been filling the short gaps between plays with on-camera, voice over and jingle work, as well as gigging and recording with other musicians and spoken word artists. Her work is featured on the albums of Truth Maze, Sha Cage, Nazirah P. Mickey, and local folk legend Larry Long. Aimee has also become the voice of Yohannes Tona Band, an afro-funk jazz ensemble that doubles as her band. Still, while acting and gigging on stages across the country and landing national commercials and jingles she was also turning her experiences into poetry and melody.

Seward Art Crawl this Weekend

The Seward Art Festival is this weekend! It starts Friday evening, Nov. 7th and goes through through Sunday the Nov. 9th at numerous venues throughout the Seward Neighborhood (just across the walk bridge from campus).

Over 100 artists, businesses, and performers are participating in this year's event on Friday and Saturday November 7th and 8th.

The program includes:

* Art Car Parade starts the festivities (11 am, Caption Max 25Th St

* Saturday Seward Art Crawl Noon-5 (guides to artists studios

Tray-less Tuesday and Composting: 3/4 of a Ton

Thanks to the Augsburg Community, we are saving 3/4 of a ton of trash from going to the land fills. Because of the "Tray-less Tuesdays" and composting, we have put Augsburg further on the map. Food Service Management magazine has looked into what we are do here in the way of going "Green". Oh, by the way, we are the only private college in Hennepin county that is doing composting. So let shoot for the full TON!

Personal Check Policy for Augsburg Dining Service

Though many of our patrons of Augsburg Dining Services purchase products through use of cash, credit card, or student meal plans, there are a large number of individuals who use personal checks on a daily basis as a form of payment. We enjoy giving everyone the free availability to use the form of payment they so desire, but you may have noticed some changes to our acceptance of Personal Checks. These changes are necessary not only on our end, but also to ensure your financial safety.

When paying for goods with a check at Cooper's Coffee Shop, The Commons, Nabo, or Murphy's Grille please remember to bring a Government Issued ID, as checks will no longer be accepted with out this.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you for your cooperation (and kindness to our cashier Sunny).

The $3.75 ($3.50+tax) lunch for faculty and staff has been enjoyed on campus for quite some time now, even before A'viands took over this summer. It is a price agreement not only with A'viands but with the school to give a little something back to those who make Augsburg what it is, a standard in higher education.

The discounted lunch was and has always been intended for Faculty/Staff only. Unfortunately we can not extend this discounted price to guests of faculty and staff, be it a significant other, someone for a meeting, or students. Standard meal rates must apply.

Standard Rates are as follows:

Breakfast $5.90 +tax
Lunch $6.90 +tax
Dinner $7.90 +tax

If you would like to study abroad you need to make sure you have the proper documentation in order to exit and enter the U.S.

Is America Obsessed with Beauty?

Back by popular demand, and exclusive 2-night showing of America the Beautiful, a documentary about America's obsession with superficial beauty, is happening at the Lagoon Cinema on Wednesday and Thursday Nov. 19 and 20th at 7:00 and 9:30PM. The film will be followed by a community forum with filmmaker Darryl Roberts.

The screening will be at the Lagoon Cinema, which is located at 1320 Lagoon Ave, in Uptown. This showing is sponsored by The Emily Program Foundation, an organization affiliated with The Emily Program, a local clinic for treatment of eating disorders.

Hildebrandt Named MIAC Men's Soccer Player of Week

MINNEAPOLIS (11/4/08) -- Augsburg College men's soccer player Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday.

A defender, Hildebrandt had a goal and an assist in Augsburg's 4-0 victory over Macalester on Friday, Augsburg's fourth consecutive shutout in conference play and league-leading seventh in MIAC play this season. The shutout was Augsburg's 10th of the season, and the win over Macalester was Augsburg's first over the Scots since 1982.

Hildebrandt currently stands second on the Augsburg men's soccer team in scoring, with four goals and six assists for 14 points, including one game-winning goal and a penalty-kick goal. His six assists rank fifth-most among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall statistics, and is a leader of a defense that allowed just 10 goals in 18 regular-season games, with 10 shutouts -- both totals second-best among MIAC teams. In his two seasons at Augsburg (50 games, 48 starts), Hildebrandt has 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points, including three game-winning goals. He earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2006.

Augsburg (11-3-5 overall) recorded its 11th shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Gustavus on Tuesday afternoon in the MIAC playoff semifinals, and will advance to face top-seed Carleton in the playoff championship game on Saturday (10/8) in Northfield.

Last week, Hildebrandt earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 first-team honors, earning Academic All-District honors for the second straight year, after earning second-team honors last season. A defender, Hildebrandt is a finance major with a 3.86 grade-point average.

ST. PETER, Minn. (11/4/08) -- Scoring three goals in the second half, the Augsburg College men's soccer team won its first postseason game since 1979 and broke a 12-game losing streak to Gustavus Adolphus College in the process, advancing to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff championship game with a 3-0 triumph over the Gusties in a conference playoff semifinal game Tuesday afternoon at the Gustie Soccer Field.

Augsburg (11-3-5 overall) claimed its first postseason win in any level of men's soccer competition -- MIAC, NAIA or NCAA Division III -- since a 3-0 conference playoff win over Gustavus on Nov. 3, 1979. The Auggies also collected their first win over the Gusties (13-5-1 overall) since a 2-1 win on Oct. 22, 1997. It is also the first win for Augsburg head coach Greg Holker -- a 2000 Gustavus graduate -- over his alma mater.

In the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs for the second time in the last three years, Augsburg will advance to play top-seed Carleton (17-1-2 overall) in the conference championship game on Saturday (11/8) at a time to be determined in Northfield, Minn., with the winner receiving an automatic (Pool A) bid to the 58-team NCAA Division III postseason playoffs and the loser a possible candidate for one of 16 at-large (Pool C) bids nationwide. In the most recent NCAA Division III regional rankings last Wednesday, Augsburg was ranked No. 5 in the West Region. Conference regular-season champion Carleton advanced to the MIAC playoff title game with a 2-0 win over No. 4-seed St. Thomas (12-7-1) on Tuesday. On Oct. 11, Augsburg handed Carleton its lone loss of the season, a 1-0 Auggie triumph in Northfield.

"Carleton will be looking to avenge their only loss, and are looking forward to the challenge," Holker said. "We have now scored seven goals in our last two games. We have spent a lot of time in the final third in the last three weeks, and it is starting to pay off. On top of that, we have remained stingy in the back."

Ten minutes into the second half, Ryley Teske (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) put the Auggies on the board, taking a cross from D.J. Wendell (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) and putting a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal. Nine minutes later, Marcus Elmerskog (FY, Trondheim, Norway) scored his first collegiate goal, on a one-timer to the left corner from 15 yards out on a cross from Nick Anderson (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.).

"Teske has been instrumental in our success since his return from injury, and for him to score the game-winner was very appropriate," Holker said. "Marcus made a difference today. He allowed Ryley to get some needed rest, and he elevated play when he entered. We hope he continues this trend on Saturday."

In the 84th minute, Augsburg completed the scoring as Ryan Sorensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) took a failed clearing attempt and scored on a two-touch shot to the top right corner.

"Sorensen's goal was a long time coming. I think I had as much fun on that as he did," Holker said. "James See (SR, Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) did what great players do in big games -- they played above themselves. James has been fun to watch, and I know he will take great pride in his responsibility on Saturday. Alex is no different -- he will make certain this team is concentrated on its objectives."

Augsburg goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) collected four saves in goal in recording his seventh shutout of the season and school-record 20th of his career. Augsburg outshot Gustavus by an 11-8 margin in the game. Gustavus goalkeeper Luke Strom had three saves in goal.

"Pascaul is on form, recording his 20th career shutout. He is the standard in our program at his position," Holker said.

As a team, Augsburg claimed its fourth straight shutout (3-0-1) and sixth in its last eight games, extending its opponent scoreless streak to 380 minutes. Augsburg has outscored its opponents by a 32-10 margin this season, including a 9-0 margin in its last four games and 13-3 margin in its last eight games.

Augsburg Ranked No. 2 in Wrestling Preseason Poll

Augsburg ranked No. 2 in preseason Division III wrestling national rankings

MINNEAPOLIS (11/4/08) -- The Augsburg College wrestling team is ranked No. 2 in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association Brute-Adidas Division III national rankings, it was announced recently, with four Auggies earning spots in individual weight class top-10 rankings.

The Auggies, under first-year head coach Mark Matzek, are coming off a third-place NCAA Division III national tournament finish from last season, with six starters and 21 letterwinners returning, along with 23 newcomers forming one of the deepest recruiting and transfer classes in program history. Augsburg finished 10-2 in dual meets last year. Augsburg has finished among the top four teams nationally each of the last 20 seasons, with 10 Division III national titles to its credit.

Augsburg was ranked No. 2 in the initial Division III poll, behind defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa). Delaware Valley (Pa.) is ranked No. 3, with Coe (Iowa) ranked No. 4 and Wisconsin-La Crosse ranked No. 5. Concordia-Moorhead is ranked No. 21, while St. John's is ranked No. 22.

Two Auggies enter the season ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes -- 125-pounder Seth Flodeen (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) and 133-pounder Travis Lang (SR, Bismarck, N.D.). Flodeen, a two-time All-American who won the 125-pound national title with a dramatic first-period pin in the championship match last season, is coming off a 25-7 record last year and has a 78-27 career mark. Lang, who finished fifth nationally last season in his first year as an Auggie after transferring from Division I Minnesota, was 38-4 last year with a team-high 21 pins, and is 74-23 in his collegiate career.

Jason Adams (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), who reached the national title match at 141 pounds last season and finished 31-9, will move up two weight classes to 157 and enters the year ranked No. 3 in the weight class. Andy Witzel (JR, Fulda, Minn.) is ranked No. 7 nationally at heavyweight. Witzel just missed a berth in the national tournament with a third-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional last year, finishing 26-15 on the season and 48-26 in his career.

Augsburg opens its 2008-09 season with the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 9 a.m. at Si Melby Hall. The Auggies' first dual meet will be on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. (5 p.m. JV), when St. John's faces the Auggies at Si Melby Hall.
