2009 Critical Language Scholarships

The United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) are pleased to announce the availability of overseas scholarships for intensive summer language institutes in eleven critical need foreign languages for summer 2009.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels (beginning not offered for Azerbaijani, Russian, Chinese or Persian). Full program details are available on our website, www.CLScholarship.org.

The CLS Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers in any field.

Eligibility: All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate* or graduate level. All candidates must have completed at least their first year of university-level study by the summer of 2009.

*Only graduate students and graduating seniors are eligible to apply to the summer 2009 Persian program.

The U.S. Department of State and CAORC welcome all eligible applications and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or handicap condition.

Grant Benefits: All CLS Program costs are covered for participants including: travel to and from the student's U.S. home city and program location, mandatory Washington, D.C. pre-departure orientation, applicable visa fees, room, board, group-based intensive language instruction, program-sponsored travel within country, and all entrance fees for CLS Program cultural enhancement activities. Note: U.S. passport fees will not be paid by the scholarship.

Augsburg Rotaract - Rotary for our Generation

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary's main objective is service -- in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18-30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they're sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. As one of Rotary's most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Rotaracts work to address their communities physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service. Possibilities for rotaractors are endless, including Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, becoming Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars or Group Study Exchange members, and many more.

We are trying to start an Augsburg Rotaract, which would be sponsored by the Minneapolis Rotary. If you are interested at all or would like to learn more about Rotary and the networking possibilities associate with Rotaract please contact:

Give Hanging Baskets New Life in Green House

Do you have, or will you have, any used plastic (or any material) hanging flower baskets. Put them to good use this fall and winter by donating them to the greenhouse (near the community garden on the NW corner of campus) so that we can use them to grow vegetables and herbs for the Campus Kitchen Project. Contact me if you have any to share.

And please go out and see the new Green House. It was funded through the Environmental Stewardship Committee and constructed by Campus Kitchen volunteers to demonstrate sustainable urban agriculture and produce food for our neighbors.

That's not Garbage, Recycle

If you have not noticed yet, all of the cups, plates, plastic wear, napkins, straws, and to-go containers being used at Coopers Coffee Shop, Nabo, and Murphy's are biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable. So when you are done, make sure you move past the trash and help make Augsburg a little greener by recycling. Oh, and keep an eye out for our composting venture with Augsburg starting on the Sept. 22. Hey, who said, "It's not easy being green"?

Recovery Month Tidbits

"Who are we to refuse forgiveness to ourselves?"

Forgiveness and amends apply not only others but also to ourselves. Isn't it a subtle form of pride that causes us to be unrelenting in our self-judgment? Wallowing in guilt is a way of remaining self-centered and an excuse for inaction. We get stuck in our bad feelings, we berate ourselves for our failings, and we cling adamantly to a fictional standard of perfection.

This is not helpful. It feeds our eating disorder. Since guilt is uncomfortable, we are tempted to look for relief in the form of extra calories or unhealthy restriction. Either way, we punish ourselves.

Practicing forgiveness begins at home, with our own failings, because the way we get better is by accepting our mistakes. We can be our own best ally, understanding the pressures and insecurities that prompt us to turn in a less-than-stellar performance and allowing ourselves the freedom to try again. Forgiving ourselves goes hand in hand with forgiving others.

I can be humble enough today to forgive myself.

Composting, More than Just a Pile of Garbage

On September 22, Augsburg Dining, in a joint effort with Augsburg College, began composting upstairs in the commons. All of the food that is left over from our customers will be placed into special containers located adjacent to the trash receptacles. There will be posters up to help in the instruction of what is to go where. Over time, this effort will expand to the other retail food locations and then campus wide. The Augsburg community will be happy to know that the end product of this composting will return the the Augsburg community garden. So please look before you throw away that half eaten sandwich and see if it can't further our environmental awareness and give back to us all.

Harvard Blue Ice Air Hockey Table (Like New)

Comes with two paddles and eight plastic pucks (2 blue octagon pucks, 2 yellow triangle pucks, 2 orange circular pucks, 2 red circular pucks). 30.25 inches high, 4 feet long, 2 feet wide. The legs fold in, so it's portable. It also doesn't take up as much space as most air hockey tables, so it would be great for a dorm as well.

I'm looking for $45 or best offer. Any questions, feel free to ask. I have pictures of it that I can send as well. Email me at shaw@augsburg.edu or call 952-432-6465 if interested.
