Security and Facilities Announcements

Security Alert: Burglary in CC

A laptop computer was taken from an office in the Christensen Center. The loss occurred sometime between 10 pm on 9/15/2008 and 6:30 am on 9/16/2008. There are no signs of forced entry.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by calling x1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Prevent Crime At Augsburg!

- Always lock your office whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.

- If you misplace or loose your key, notify DPS immediately.

- Do not allow others to "tailgate" into a secured building behind you. If someone does follow you in and you do not feel comfortable asking them to leave, please call DPS at x1717 immediately.

- Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home. Do not being unnecessary valuable items with you to campus, leave them at home.

- Keep your car keys on your person at all times.

- Immediately report anyone behaving suspiciously to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.

If you have any questions regarding campus safety, please feel free to contact John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or by email at pack@augsburg.edu.

Reminder about URGO Research/Travel Funding

Just a reminder if you are considering applying for student conference travel funding, or academic year research funding through the URGO department -- this funding is ONLY available to undergraduate students, NOT graduate students. Our apologies for any confusion.

Faculty Travel Funds

Beginning now, all faculty travel requests should be submitted through the online form at www.augsburg.edu/ctl. This change includes both the $400 from CTL and the $800 "Dean's Travel" travel money. As long as funds last (the amount for professional development has always been a limited budget line), faculty may apply for up to a $1200 total for the academic year. Faculty may draw from that total more than once and this change allows easier access, better tracking of professional support, and clearer knowledge of funds. Please contact Diane Pike, Director of CTL if you have questions. pike@augsburg.edu

Seminary Fair Registration Deadline Tomorrow

If you are interested in exploring a possible vocation as a pastor, lay ministry professional, religion professor, AIM, or deacon, then you will want to check out the Seminary & Divinity School Fair held on September 25 at Gustavus Adolphus College. Augsburg will be brining a contingent of students to visit with representatives from nearly 20 top-notch schools, participate in break-out sessions that explore the possibilities of a seminary or divinity school education, and talk with current students and recent alumni about their experiences.

We will depart Augsburg at 8 a.m. and return at about 5 p.m. The day begins with chapel at Gustavus, followed by a welcome and introductory comments. A lunch, featuring Augsburg MIS professor and pastor, Lee Clarke will happen mid-day breakout sessions in the afternoon. All day long, representatives from seminaries and divinity schools will be on hand to answer questions about programs and vocational opportunities.

This day is an important way to explore possibilities with people who want to help you find your best fit for a school, a career, and a vocation. Students who are just "checking it out" are encouraged to attend as well.

General Announcements

Recovery Month Tidbits

The Universe by nature is loving and supportive. Successful people know how to tap this support by enlisting the cooperation of others in order to achieve their goals. They also know that to receive support, they must first support themselves. An entrepreneur once told his fellow inventors, "Before others will believe in you, you must believe in yourself. Your faith in yourself will attract investment capital more than any business plan could." Unfortunately, the people who need the most support often have the hardest time asking for it. Growing up in an environment where love was denied, they don't believe they deserve it. This is why it is important to affirm our basic worthiness. People want to extend themselves to you; it feels good to give. Encourage them to do so by believing in yourself and reaching out for what you want. The Universe will reach back to take your hand. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you. It cannot be otherwise.

Augsburg Rotaract - Rotary for Our Generation

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary's main objective is service -- in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18-30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they're sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. As one of Rotary's most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Rotaracts work to address their communities physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service. Possibilities for rotaractors are endless, including Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, becoming Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars or Group Study Exchange members, and many more.

We are trying to start an Augsburg Rotaract, which would be sponsored by the Minneapolis Rotary. If you are interested at all or would like to learn more about Rotary and the networking possibilities associate with Rotaract please contact:

Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15

Hispanics in America: The Occasion, Stories, Education and Augsburg's story

In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month-long celebration. During this month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), North America celebrates the culture and traditions of its citizens or residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18 respectively. Throughout Latin America, a civic holiday is also celebrated on October 12 called "Día de la Raza" (Day of the People) or Columbus Day; it commemorates the Spaniards arrival on an island called San Salvador in 1492.

A true American story: "I am a ‘Peter Pan' Cuban who came to Wichita, Kansas in the 1960s. I educated myself and owned my own business for 25 years. I was the only Hispanic in the Kansas House of Representatives in 1992 when I was elected and served 10 years. I left the Kansas House and ran for Mayor of Wichita and was elected in 2003, the first minority mayor elected by the people of Wichita since the city was founded in 1870." – By Mr. Carlos Mayans.

How do Hispanics do business? "Treat Your Customers like Family, The Hispanic Way: It's in the Hispanic DNA. Hispanic salespeople, driven by their culture, have always impressed as having a natural inclination to connect more warmly and personably with customers and prospects than the broader range of salespeople. Often they view their business relationships as part of an extended family." Hispanic Business Magazine, 2008.

Our education story and making the grade throughout the nation: Hispanic professional and doctoral degrees have increased sharply since the 1970s, according to the U.S. Department of Education. There is no question that given the chance Hispanic students can make the grade. The Department of Education reports from 1977 to 2005 the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanic students rose from 18,743 to 101,124 or over 500 percent. The number of Hispanics gaining masters' degrees has seen similar leaps upward, climbing from 6,071 in 1997 to 31,485 in 2005. At lower level schools, the numbers have also improved. In 2006, 75 percent of U.S.-born Hispanics graduated from high school, which is much improved from two decades earlier, when only 54 percent did, according to U.S. census data.

An Augsburg story: "It's hard to believe that I am halfway done with college; all seems like just yesterday I was worrying about what to wear for prom night. I would like to tell you that I have matured and become more sophisticated but sadly I still watch cartoons. As a student however I have changed some critical things like the way I study and have also made sure to connect more with my professors. I learned last year the strongest students in class are those who connect with professors. On another note, my grandfather died recently and his death reminds me that education is very important. I am very grateful for the chance to attend college. Thanks Augsburg." – By a Hispanic/Latino Student.

Augsburg's Hispanic/Latino Student Services program (H/LSS) was established in 1993 to meet the College's goals of inclusiveness, diversity and "to nurture future leaders in service to the world." In 1993, 13 students were enrolled and by 2003 this number had increased to 40 students. Over the next five years or Fall 2008 enrollment rose to 109 students or over 170 percent, that includes Day, WEC, Graduate and Rochester students. We are very proud that since 2000, over 65 students have graduated from all programs. Indeed a brighter future is ahead. The American dream is alive.
