All of the food that is left over from our customers will be placed into special containers located adjacent to the trash receptacles. There will be posters up to help in the instruction of what is to go where. Over time, this effort will expand to the other retail food locations and then campus wide. The Augsburg community will be happy to know that the end product of this composting will return the the Augsburg community garden. Hispanic Heritage Month: Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Hispanics in America: Origin, Current Population and Heroes/Heroines

Hispanic Heritage Month is an excellent time to take a moment and reflect on the lives of those who came before: these are men and women of extraordinary courage, vision and resolve who opened the doors for generations who followed. To help celebrate these special days, we must pay tribute to all figures of U.S. history whose lives and accomplishments should not be forgotten; especially of those working the land and factories and living a life without recognition.

About Hispanic's origin, two questions need to be explored: Who are we as Hispanics or Latinos? How long have we been in America? Experts say: “The Hispanic heritage began as a synthesis of Celtic, Phoenician, Germanic, Greek, Roman and Arabic cultures and bloods; and became enriched by the bloods and cultures of African and indigenous Americans.” It also seems Hispanics arrived just decades ago, but according to history in 1850 there were 100,000 Hispanics among the 23 million residents of the United States. Exploring further into our American history tells us that Hispanic American's presence or bravery is well-known and has been demonstrated time and again, dating back to the aid rendered by General Galvez during the American Revolution as well as by many in World War II or in today's wars. The Hispanic story in America began long ago and continues today.

As of July 2007 the US Hispanic Population was 45.5 million, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or race minority; they constituted 15 percent of the nation's total population. In 2008 these numbers need to be adjusted. A few facts in the population's growth: about one of every two people added to the nation's population between July 2006 and July 2007, was Hispanic. Overall it represents 3.3% increase in the population during the same period, making Hispanics the fastest-growing minority group. Like any immigrant group that has shaped mainstream U.S. culture before fully asserting its economic or political power, the nation's 45.5 million Hispanics are just getting settled in economically. A recent study reports “U.S. Hispanic purchasing power surged to nearly $870 billion in 2008 and is projected to reach as much as $1.3 trillion by 2015.” During the past decade, the rate of growth was more than two times the overall national rate.

In 2007, U.S. Hispanic population ranked second worldwide. Only Mexico at 108.7 million had a larger Hispanic population than did the United States, 45.5 million. Spain had a population of 40.4 million. Looking ahead, in 2050, the projected Hispanic population of the United States is 132.8 million which will constitute 30 percent of the nation's population.

As US's largest ethnic or race minority, Hispanics promise to help remake America in the 21st century as vitally as African Americans did in the 20th century. Historically and as in the present, Hispanics and their advances in the sciences, arts and in sports are countless, and to list all the accomplishments and contributions to our society would be endless. Briefly, bellow a few men and women are mentioned or featured and who are considered as heroes/heroines thanks for their impact in America's culture and in the world. They are:

• Mr. Luis W. Alvarez won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968.
• Ms. Ellen Lauri Ochoa became the first Hispanic women in space in 1993. She has since completed four flights, logging almost 1,000 hours in space.
• Ms. Lucrezia Bori made her operatic debut at the age of 21. She became a heading performer at the New York Metropolitan Opera. She died in 1960.
• Mr. Ramon Navarro born in Mexico in 1899 was a trailblazer for US Hispanic actors in the era of silent movies.
• Ms. Romana Acosta Banuelos was the first Latina Treasurer of the United States in 1971.
• Mr. Jose Antonio Romualdo Pacheco was, in 1875, an important figure in California politics. He remains the only Hispanic Governor of California.
• Mr. Esteban Bellan was the first Hispanic to play Major League Baseball, and among US's greatest. He became a successful manager in his native Cuba, and died in 1932.
• Mr. Cesar Chavez, a Mexican-American farm worker who became in the 1960s and for decades after a pivotal figure in labor relations and civil rights. Eight US states have declared his birthday, March 31, a public holiday.

For more description of these famous Hispanics please call or write, or for any other information contact Emiliano at chagil@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1309. -¡Viva America!

Soccer Player Featured on KARE-11

Augsburg men's soccer player Matt Bowman (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) was featured in a news story on KARE-11 television on Tuesday night.

Last month, during an Augsburg preseason scrimmage, Bowman collapsed on the field, due to what was later diagnosed as an anomalous coronary artery heart defect, a rare disorder that is often fatal in 80 percent of patients before it is diagnosed. Bowman had an operation to correct the defect on Sept. 12, was released from the hospital on Sept. 16 and returned to the Augsburg campus on Monday.

Last night, Bowman joined his teammates on the bench as Augsburg defeated St. Olaf 3-0, and KARE-11 reporter Karla Hult documented his return.

View the story from Tuesday's KARE-11 News here:
