You will have that chance on Monday, October 6 at a brown bag lunch/discussion in the Minneapolis Room from noon - 1 p.m. Rosemary Link and Cheryl Leuning will lead the discussion and answer your questions about the proposal. You can find the full DNP proposal and accompanying materials in the Faculty Senate Public folder in ORGs. Disability Awareness Month information

Today's fact:
Everybody's fighting some kind of stereotype, and people with disabilities are no exception. The difference is that many of the barriers people with disabilities face begin with people's attitudes. And attitudes are often rooted in misinformation and misunderstandings about what it's like to live with a disability.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration with Harp Music

All Are Invited: Come, listen and enjoy Paraguayan music

Nicolas Carter will perform Monday, October 6 at noon in CC main lobby

Nicolas Carter, a Minnesota native, learned to play the harp in Paraguay a country with a distinguished tradition of harp music. Since 1988, Nicolas has been performing professionally throughout Europe, Latin America, United States and in his second native country Paraguay, South America.

About the Harp and Music
The Paraguayan harp is a result of the fusion of two cultures, the Spanish and the Guarani, the native people of Paraguay. The instrument was introduced to Paraguay by Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century and was quickly adopted by the indigenous population who perfected it with its own style. They began constructing harps from local woods and developed a style and a repertoire that was uniquely Paraguayan. The harp and its unique style contributed greatly to the art of music and same can be said that it was a catalyst of the union of the two cultures or races and gave birth to the Mestizo, without being Indian or Spanish, to be simply Paraguayan.
The evolution of the classical harp did not affect the Paraguayan folklore, which took unique courses in its progressive improvement. For example the Paraguayan harp did not adapt to utilize pedals and mechanical peg-boxes that allow the classic harp to easily change keys. To overcome the limitations of not having the chromatic scale, Paraguayan harpists developed sophisticated techniques of playing the instrument and challenged themselves by creating embellished melodies with complexity and liveliness. Paraguayan harpists use their fingernails to pluck the string to generate a crisp and clear sound. It helped the harp remained a diatonic instrument until only recently when modern harpists added levers which allow the harpist to change keys while playing.

Today, the Paraguayan harp instrument is one of the favorite harps around the world. It is distinguished from other folk harps by the quality of its gentle yet vibrant sound, which can be relaxing or festive.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Schield Paper in Mathematics Association Book

Milo Schield, Professor in Business Administration, argues that school mathematics can do better in meeting the needs of non-quantitative students: the students that will make up the 40% of college graduates who are in non-quantitative majors. His invited paper was published in a book by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The book is titled "Calculation vs. Context: Quantitative Literacy and Its Implications for Teacher Education." Milo recommended less focus on symbolic algebra and more focus on using ordinary English to describe and compare rates and percentages as presented in tables and graphs. Milo's paper, "Quantitative Literacy and School Mathematics: Percentages and Fractions" is on the web.

Berg Named to D3Football.com Team of Week

Augsburg's Jordan Berg named to D3Football.com Team of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/100108berg.html

MINNEAPOLIS (10/1/08) -- Augsburg College quarterback Jordan Berg (SR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) was named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday for his efforts in Augsburg's 49-21 victory over St. Olaf on Saturday.

Berg completed 37-of-53 passing for 397 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, leading the Auggie offense to touchdowns on their first five drives to build a 35-14 halftime lead, en route to the dominating victory, improving Augsburg's record to 3-0 on the season, 1-0 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The 397-yard effort was the ninth of his career (23 games), and improved his career stats to 594 completions, 998 attempts, 6,507 yards and 56 passing touchdowns.

Berg already holds school records for career completions and touchdowns, and has a chance to break the attempt and yardage records in next Saturday's (10/4) game at Hamline. He is just 24 passing attempts away from the school record of 1,022, and just 117 yards away from the passing yardage record of 6,624, both held by Derrin Lamker (1993-97).

On the season, Berg has completed 95-of-147 passes for 956 yards with nine touchdowns and just two interceptions. In the latest NCAA Division III national statistics, Berg ranks first nationally in pass completions per-game (31.67), ninth in passing yardage per-game (318.67), 20th in total passing yardage (956) and eighth in total offense per-game (321.3). His 95 completions are seventh-highest among Division III quarterbacks, and his two interceptions are the second-fewest among the 22 Division III quarterbacks who average 22 or more completions per-game.

It marks the first time that Berg has been named to the national Team of the Week by D3Football.com, a national website that covers NCAA Division III football. It is the second time an Auggie has been named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week this season; wide receiver Royce Winford (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) was named to the squad on Sept. 17. Berg was also named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

With the win over the Oles, the Auggies are 3-0 for the first time since the 1999 campaign. Augsburg travels to face Hamline next Saturday (10/4) at 1 p.m. in St. Paul, with a chance to improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 1973 season (Augsburg started 5-0 en route to a 7-2 overall finish).
