Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant

Summer 2008

Purpose

Augsburg values faculty research and creative projects and thus is making available this opportunity to support faculty work. The purpose of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects that are nearing completion. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for a faculty member to accelerate completion of a significant project by providing this substantial opportunity.

Description and Eligibility

Two $4,000 Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for summer 2008. One grant will be awarded to a faculty member who received tenure prior to the 2007-2008 academic year. One grant will be awarded to a tenure-track faculty member who successfully passed 3rd-Year Review prior to the 2007-2008 academic year.

Faculty members who receive a Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course total in Summer Session.

Application Process

Please submit a 1-2 page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a clear timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. You are asked to attach a curriculum vitae and any directly relevant supporting materials. This information will help the Faculty Development Committee know the applicant and review the history of scholarly activity. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2008 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2009.

Submit applications as e-mail attachments no later than 5 p.m. on March 14 to martin@augsburg.edu. Applications are evaluated by the Faculty Development Committee, recommendations are forwarded to the Dean, and the awards are announced in early April.

Instructional and Course Design Opportunity

Instructional and Course Design Summer Stipends
Call for Proposals - Summer 2008

The Instructional and Course Design initiative within the Center for Teaching and Learning invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during Summer 2008 and completed by the end of Fall term 2008. Proposals are due March 8 and funding decisions will be made before mid-term break. All faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit.

Program Description.

The program funds the critique and design stages separately. Funding levels are intended to provide a realistic option to teaching summer courses in order to re-direct faculty effort to design questions and have a direct impact on the effectiveness of mainline academic year courses.

Four areas are supported under the program at the following levels:

1) design-based critique of an existing course, $1,500
2) revision (resulting from a design-based critique) of an existing course, $2,500
3) design-based critique and revision, or creation of a new course using design methodology, $4,000

Projects that address chronically underperforming courses will be awarded stipends 20% greater than those listed above.

Submission, Selection Process, and Selection Criteria

Proposals should be submitted directly to the Asst. Director for IC&D as Microsoft Word files attached to an e-mail "cover letter" message. The e-mail address is:

anderstu@augsburg.edu

Proposals are due by March 8, 2008 and should follow the requested format to facilitate evaluation and turnaround. They will be evaluated by the IC&D committee composed of the Asst. Director of CTL for IC&D, a member of the IT staff, a member of the library staff, and a representative from CFD. Decisions will be made before Spring Break.

Projects will be selected on the basis of the overall impact of the proposed student learning improvements, including the need for the project, the significance of the proposed improvements, and the number of students affected.

Project Execution and Compensation.

Kickoff meeting. Awardees will meet with the Asst. Director for IC&D before commencing work on the project as well as during the work. The purpose of the initial meeting is to clarify the expectations of the design process (working from learning objectives to evidence to assessments to choice of instruction) as it relates to each particular project, set a timetable for communication during the project, and make an initial assessment of the project’s probable need for design expertise within the library, IT, or other areas.

Communication during the project. During the project work period, the awardee will maintain communication with the Asst. Director and others as agreed upon in the initial meeting to report progress and acquire assistance with the design effort or access to other expertise as needed.

Final Report. After the project is completed, the awardee will prepare and submit a written report that summarizes the results the work and includes a portfolio of all materials whose modification (before and after versions) or creation resulted from the project. In addition, the awardee will meet with the Asst. Director after the products of the project have been used in class to discuss the extent to which the learning objectives were achieved as well as the effectiveness of the IC&D process in achieving these results.

Stipend Disbursement. Release of stipend funds will occur in two parts: half to be released after a successful initial meeting and the remaining half released after the final report is received and judged acceptable by the IC&D committee.

Faculty Scholarship Forum

Thursday Feb. 28, 2008
4 - 5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery*

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience: 4 - 4:40 p.m. and 5 - 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Wine and appetizers will be offered during the “intermission.”

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues’ work in the second slot. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of six to eight faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. We hope this forum will showcase the work of a diversity of colleagues. Faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as colleagues who received research and travel grants are particularly encouraged to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. And this is fun. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

NEW: Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage and should be submitted online at www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 12-14 different presentations (six to seven different faculty each round) and to repeat this forum with different presenters next November. If this model is successful, we hope to offer the Forum as a regular event twice a year.

Details are on the web site and questions are welcome to: pike@augsburg.edu.

On-line Abstracts due Feb. 22.

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton, which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Fringe Festival Show on Body Image Monday, Feb. 25

“Blondes, Bikinis, and Barbies!”

Please join Augsburg alums Tessa Flynn and Tim McVean (and the rest of their cast including author Lauren Spears) for their witty show, “Wrapped in Plastic,” an “honest and surreal exploration of body image.” The play, originally developed at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, will be presented in East Commons on Monday, Feb. 25, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. (plus time for Q&A). From the Fringe Festival blog: “It is an insightful, entertaining look at ‘fitting in’ that is appropriate for adults as well as youth. The story follows Drea, as she is stalked by an image consultant who is willing/eager to make her over into the ideal woman. Aren't we all stalked by the inner image consultant who points out our flaws and helpfully replays events in our life that reinforce our feelings of inadequacy? Written and acted in by Lauren Spears, this show is top notch! Funny, poignant, and touching.”

This event is part of Making Peace with Your Body: National Eating Disorders Awareness Week; sponsored by Alumni Relations, the Augsburg Theater Arts Department, and Counseling & Health Promotion. Call x1707 if you have questions

Organic Veggies for You, Some for Campus Kitchen

The Campus Kitchen tries to source as much as their food from local and sustainable farmers as possible, and we want to make all this great food available to you as well.

Each summer, we buy shares of a nearby organic farm, and each week they deliver a large box full of whatever is in season (lettuce, herbs, etc. in June, tomatoes, corn, melons, plenty more in September). It's more like buying stock in a company than purchasing food at a store. We are making Augsburg a drop-off site for a farm so staff, faculty, and others are able to purchase a share and have it delivered each week to Christensen Center to pick up.

FAQ's:

How much food? > About 15-25 pounds per box per week. Plenty enough for 4 people
How long? > About 20 weeks, Mid-June through September
How much? > $400-500 (not bad for 300-400 lbs of organic produce)
Is it only veggies? > Some farms offer meat, cheese, eggs, jam as well
From where? > Still researching the best farm
When? > Dropped off in mornings, once during week
Can I split? > Sure. If you only want half, we can match you with someone else wanting the same
What do I do with things I don't like? > Donate them to the Campus Kitchen! We'll have a box to collect anything you can't use. There are also recipes provided to help you discover the flavors of kohlrabi, bok choy, arugula, and other funky varieties.

Not only is this great for the Augsburg community to have such easy access to this tasty, sustainably produced food, but it remedies the most common complaint CSA members have: too much food, too much waste, and the resulting compost guilt. Since we do have the Campus Kitchen here, anything you won't be able to handle will be prepared into the 1,500 meals we serve each month or distributed to the Brian Coyle food shelf. We have an opportunity here unlike any I have seen.

If you think that you might be interested, please let me know - noy@augsburg.edu. If you have any questions, anything that you would like us to consider (like best delivery day for you), or have a farm to suggest, please let us know. For more info on CSAs, please see http://www.landstewardshipproject.org/csa.html.
