Friday Seminar, Feb. 22

"Cultural Explorations: Flamenco and the Gypsies of Southern Spain"
Presented by Kathy Reinhardt, Modern Languages

Passionate guitar rhythms, intense foot work, frenetic hand clapping and deeply expressive singing: these are some of the elements that we will examine as we explore the essence of flamenco, the dance of southern Spain. We will start by exploring the historical and cultural roots of this Spanish tradition, including the connections made between gypsies and flamenco before examining the elements that make flamenco an intense musical experience!

General Announcements

ELCA Camp Fair, Feb. 21, 4 - 6 p.m.

What are you doing this summer?

Do you want a job that entails long days (you sleep in the cabin), in harsh conditions (it will probably storm at least one day), with demanding customers (kids have very high standards)?

Or do you want to work in a factory?

Consider working at a camp this summer. Every summer, hundreds of camps across the country work with children and youth. Next Thursday, Feb. 21 will be the ELCA Camp Fair. Over 20 camps will be on campus in the East Commons, recruiting you to work in the great outdoors with Children of God.

Can’t afford it? Pish-posh!

The Lilly Grant is giving away 18 stipends worth $500 to Augsburg College students who work at a summer camp. Visit Ross Murray at the camp fair for an application, or e-mail him at murray@augsburg.edu.

CSA Vegetable Share = Local

Interested in local, sustainable, nutritional, charitable, and affordable vegetables all summer long? Read on to learn about the new system at Augsburg to provide you with this, and each day we'll highlight a different "L" word to share the value of this program.

LOCAL - Veggies from the CSA share program (read below from details) come from farms anywhere between 30-150 miles from campus. Compare that to the average 2,500 miles your food usually travels. Most of what is delivered is picked fresh that morning, and the veggie varieties that are grown were bred for flavor, rather than the ability to be transported great distances. Yum! And what way to stimulate the economy than use your coming rebate check to invest it directly into your regional economy, rather than purchasing imported foods. For more info on the CSA program, read on...

The Campus Kitchen tries to source as much as their food from local and sustainable farmers as possible, and we want to make all this great food available to you as well.

Each summer, we buy shares of a nearby organic farm, and each week they deliver a large box full of whatever is in season (lettuce, herbs, etc. in June, tomatoes, corn, melons, plenty more in September). It's more like buying stock in a company than purchasing food at a store. We are making Augsburg a drop-off site for a farm so staff, faculty, and others are able to purchase a share and have it delivered each week to Christensen Center to pick up.

FAQ's:

How much food? > About 15-25 pounds per box per week. Plenty enough for 4 people
How long? > About 20 weeks, Mid-June through September
How much? > $400-500 (not bad for 300-400 lbs of organic produce)
Is it only veggies? > Some farms offer meat, cheese, eggs, jam as well
From where? > Still researching the best farm
When? > Dropped off in mornings, once during week
Can I split? > Sure. If you only want half, we can match you with someone else wanting the same
What do I do with things I don't like? > Donate them to the Campus Kitchen! We'll have a box to collect anything you can't use. There are also recipes provided to help you discover the flavors of kohlrabi, bok choy, arugula, and other funky varieties.

Not only is this great for the Augsburg community to have such easy access to this tasty, sustainably produced food, but it remedies the most common complaint CSA members have: too much food, too much waste, and the resulting compost guilt. Since we do have the Campus Kitchen here, anything you won't be able to handle will be prepared into the 1,500 meals we serve each month or distributed to the Brian Coyle food shelf. We have an opportunity here unlike any I have seen.

If you think that you might be interested, please let me know - noy@augsburg.edu. If you have any questions, anything that you would like us to consider (like best delivery day for you), or have a farm to suggest, please let us know. For more info on CSAs, please see http://www.landstewardshipproject.org/csa.html.
