Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning
Annual Recognition 2008

The Office of Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College
The Center for Teaching and Learning
Augsburg College

These awards recognize exemplary work by faculty and staff in support of teaching and learning at Augsburg College. Up to three awards are available annually reflecting the breadth of contributions important for a quality liberal education. Each award carries a stipend of $1,000, public recognition, and celebration.

Awards are based on evidence of student learning and student satisfaction provided by students, colleagues, and documentation; they are weighted appropriately for each of the three areas. The selection process is as follows:

• The deadline for nominations is Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. Nominations should be submitted on line. Go to: www.augsburg.edu/ctl

• Questions can be directed to Diane Pike at pike@augsburg.edu or x1228.

• Nominations consist of a one to two-page letter identifying the nominee and providing a rationale for the nomination; in addition, nominators are asked to submit three to four names (and e-mail addresses) of students and/or colleagues who can speak to nominee’s work.
•
• The Selection Panel conducts confidential interviews with members of the community, reviews information and announces the awards no later than March 28. Awardees are acknowledged at the Honors Convocation and at other events. Opportunities for winners to share ideas with the campus community will take place throughout the year following the award.

The Selection Panel is invited by the Dean of the College and the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. This is a juried process.

Teaching Award
Sustained excellence is demonstrated through syllabi, course materials and grading patterns reflecting effective teaching and learning; exemplary work in both content and pedagogy is supported by evidence from the department chair, colleagues and students.

Mentor/Advising
Sustained excellence is demonstrated through deep conversation about and attention to vocation, career and student success overall; Students are guided through the processes leading to successful and timely graduation; Students recognize the attention and care provided by the nominee.

Service to Students/Other Direct Contributions to Teaching and Learning
Sustained excellence is demonstrated in work that contributes to students’ academic development, growth and success; Contributions are made to a positive, academic campus environment in a direct way.

URGO Summer Research Application Deadlines

The 2008 URGO Summer Research program is being held from June 1 - Aug. 1, 2008.

The deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. on FRIDAY, FEB. 27, 2008.

Student applicants and their faculty mentors should work together to complete the application, which can be found on the URGO web site. Specific instructions are provided for each section. Please type your information directly into the forms; feel free to add space as needed. Place the student’s name in the document’s header, and please delete these instructions. Print and sign the forms and bring them to URGO in Science 116 by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, 2008.

Faculty Scholarship Forum

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience: 4 - 4:40 p.m. and 5 - 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Wine and appetizers will be offered during the “intermission.”

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues’ work in the second slot. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of six to eight faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. We hope this forum will showcase the work of a diversity of colleagues. Faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as colleagues who received research and travel grants are particularly encouraged to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. And this is fun. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

NEW: Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage and should be submitted online at www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 12-14 different presentations (six to seven different faculty each round) and to repeat this forum with different presenters next November. If this model is successful, we hope to offer the Forum as a regular event twice a year.

Four Augsburg students will participate in in Nautilus Music-Theater's monthly series, "Rough Cuts."

Nautilus Music-Theater continues its fourteenth season of ROUGH CUTS: fast art, loose ideas, and odd angles: Nautilus’ monthly series of ROUGH CUTS presentations feature uncompromising vocal and theatrical talent in an intimate and informal setting. Farewell Party for Jen Hellie

Many of you know Jen Hellie. You may have attended undergraduate or graduate courses with her here at Augsburg. You may have worked with her in her role as admissions counselor or academic adviser. Jen has been a good friend, colleague, and supporter of all things Augsburg for many years. It is with great sadness that I announce Jen’s resignation. We’re so sorry to see her go and will miss her dearly. Our loss is truly Lake Wapogasset Lutheran Bible Camp’s gain. Please join us in thanking Jen for all she’s done and wishing her well as she embarks on her new career at Lake Wapo. We’ll celebrate Jen and her many contributions to Augsburg on Monday, Feb. 25 from 3 - 4:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room.

World Visions Staff Book Group -- Book Change

Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," is scheduled to be a presenter at this year's Peace Prize Forum. He has established schools in the most remote poverty stricken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace.

Given this wonderful opportunity to hear him speak at the Peace Prize Forum, we have decided to change our winter book selection to his book, "Three Cups of Tea."
