Attend Open Sessions -- Signature Academic Building

Many thanks to everyone who attended last Friday's brown-bag lunch that featured a discussion about the signature academic building. Architects from Holabird & Root and the Project Management Team appreciated your feedback on the building design concepts. Barbara Farley will host two additional feedback sessions this week: Feb. 26 brown-bag lunch from noon - 1 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center, and Feb. 27 coffee break from 2 - 3 p.m. in the Marshall Room. We will present a comprehensive proposal to the Board of Regents on May 2, and we need your best ideas to make this a great building in the heart of campus.

Batalden Convocation/Symposium: Thursday - Saturday

GLOBAL ORDER & GLOBAL WARMING: Thinking with Reinhold Niebuhr about Politics

Batalden Convocation/Symposium in Applied Ethics: Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Feb. 28 - March 1 in the Foss Center

Thursday, 7:30 p.m. – "CREATING GLOBAL ORDER: A Niebuhrian View of New Realities "
The landscape of global politics changed dramatically in 2001, but the desire for faith, freedom, and security has a long history. How can we achieve those enduring human goals in the world we have now?

Friday, 10 a.m. – "GLOBAL ORDER & GLOBAL WARMING: Thinking with Niebuhr about Politics"
Reinhold Niebuhr lived in a time when the big problem was the balance of power between nations, but he understood the realities of politics in ways that are relevant to new problems like global warming, too.

Saturday at noon – "FAITH & POLITICS: A Niebuhrian Perspective" (Minneapolis Room)
Much has been said about the place of religion in contemporary politics, but to sort out those issues, we have to ask first about the place of politics in a life of faith.

SPEAKER: ROBIN W. LOVIN
Cary Maguire University Professor of Ethics, Southern Methodist University
"Robin Lovin, one of the premier scholars on Reinhold Niebuhr, has written a basic primer [2007] on Niebuhr’s life and thought that is unmatched by the many works on this pioneer of ‘Christian Realism’. And, it comes at a time when a recovery of key motifs from Niebuhr are demanded by our social and political context. This volume should have an honored place on the scholar’s shelf and on the novice’s reading list."
Education
Ph.D., Harvard University, 1978; B.D., Harvard University, 1971; B.A., Northwestern University, 1968

"Sustainable Cities" Deadline this Friday

This week is the last week to get your applications in for "Sustainable Cities in North America" Summer II course.

This July, Lars Christiansen and Nancy Fischer will bring 15 students to Portland, Ore. for 1 week and Vancouver, BC for 2 weeks to experience these extraordinary and beautiful cities. We will explore the neighborhoods of both cities, meet with community organizers, scholars, city planners, architects, transportation advocates, and others as we see how people are working to create livable human communities in urban contexts. We will then return to the Twin Cities to compare our own cities to these leading cities in North America.

http://www.augsburg.edu/augsburgabroad/Canada.pdf

This week is our last chance for making this course a reality! We have nine students enrolled and two more who have made verbal commitments. This leaves four more students we need to make this course happen. Join us by submitting your application to Augsburg Abroad by Friday afternoon, Feb. 29 (official deadline in Saturday March 1).

Questions? Help with the application? Contact:

General Announcements

CSA Vegetable Share = Economical

Interested in local, sustainable, nutritional, charitable, and affordable vegetables all summer long? Read on to learn about the new system at Augsburg to provide you with this, and each day we'll highlight a different "-AL" word to share the value of this program.

ECONOMICAL – The CSA farm share program (read below for details) is an economical way to feed yourself and your family throughout the summer. If a $500 share gave you about 20 lbs of produce for 19 weeks, that's $1.30/lb for organic herbs and veggies. It's also economical for the producer who is able to have secure income at the beginning of the season. Sound reasonable? Read on…

The Campus Kitchen tries to source as much as their food from local and sustainable farmers as possible, and we want to make all this great food available to you as well.

Each summer, we buy shares of a nearby organic farm, and each week they deliver a large box full of whatever is in season (lettuce, herbs, etc. in June, tomatoes, corn, melons, plenty more in September). It's more like buying stock in a company than purchasing food at a store. We are making Augsburg a drop-off site for a farm so staff, faculty, and others are able to purchase a share and have it delivered each week to Christensen Center to pick up.

FAQ's:

How much food? > About 15-25 pounds per box per week. Plenty enough for 4 people
How long? > About 20 weeks, Mid-June through September
How much? > $400-500 (not bad for 300-400 lbs of organic produce)
Is it only veggies? > Some farms offer meat, cheese, eggs, jam as well
From where? > Still researching the best farm
When? > Dropped off in mornings, once during week
Can I split? > Sure. If you only want half, we can match you with someone else wanting the same
What do I do with things I don't like? > Donate them to the Campus Kitchen! We'll have a box to collect anything you can't use. There are also recipes provided to help you discover the flavors of kohlrabi, bok choy, arugula, and other funky varieties.

If you think that you might be interested, please let me know - noy@augsburg.edu. If you have any questions, anything that you would like us to consider (like best delivery day for you), or have a farm to suggest, please let us know. For more info on CSAs, please see http://www.landstewardshipproject.org/csa.html.

Fringe Festival Show on Body Image TONIGHT

“Blondes, bikinis, and Barbies!”

Please join Augsburg alums Tessa Flynn and Tim McVean (and the rest of their cast including author Lauren Spears) for their witty show, “Wrapped in Plastic,” an “honest and surreal exploration of body image.” The play, originally developed at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, will be presented in East Commons TONIGHT from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. (plus time for Q&A). From the Fringe Festival blog: "It is an insightful, entertaining look at 'fitting in' that is appropriate for adults as well as youth. The story follows Drea, as she is stalked by an image consultant who is willing/eager to make her over into the ideal woman. Aren't we all stalked by the inner image consultant who points out our flaws and helpfully replays events in our life that reinforce our feelings of inadequacy? Written and acted in by Lauren Spears, this show is top notch! Funny, poignant, and touching."

This event is part of Making Peace with Your Body: National Eating Disorders Awareness Week; sponsored by Alumni Relations, the Augsburg Theater Arts Department, and Counseling & Health Promotion. Call x1707 if you have questions.
