Faculty Scholarship Forum

Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008
4-5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery*

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience—4 - 4:40 p.m. and 5 - 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Wine and appetizers will be offered during the “intermission”.

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues’ work in the second slot. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of 6-8 faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. We hope this forum will showcase the work of a diversity of colleagues. Faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as colleagues who received research and travel grants are particularly encouraged to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. And this is fun. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

NEW: Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage and should be submitted online at www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 12-14 different presentations (6-7 different faculty each round) and to repeat this forum with different presenters next November. If this model is successful we hope to offer the Forum as a regular event twice a year.

Details are on the website and questions are welcome to: pike@augsburg.edu).

On-line Abstracts due Feb. 22

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton which will be held in April and focus on student work

World Visions Staff book group-book change

Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," is scheduled to be a presenter at this year's Peace Prize Forum. He has established schools in the most remote poverty stricken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace.

Given this wonderful opportunity to hear him speak at the Peace Prize Forum, we have decided to change our winter book selection to his book, "Three Cups of Tea."

“'Three Cups of Tea' is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time. Greg Mortenson’s dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it’s proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world.” - Tom Brokaw

We will meet the following dates in the Riverside Room from noon - 1:15 p.m. to discuss the book:

Feb. 13, 2008
March 5, 2008

All staff members are welcome! Books will not be provided this time, so please obtain your own if you would like to participate. This book can be found in the Augsburg bookstore, as well as at other retailers and online sites. If you have already purchased our previous winter book selection, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," hang on to it as we may read it in the spring.

Please RSVP to Holley Locher at locherh@augsburg.edu or x1763 by Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher and Lisa Roe

Catch the fever! – Go to your caucus Tuesday!

Learn about the process - Find out what to expect
Attend a workshop tonight
Day: Monday, Feb 4, 2008
Time: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Place: Oren Gateway Center, room 103 (1st floor, SE corner)

Q & A about the party caucuses on Super Tuesday

Q. What is a precinct caucus?
A: A precinct caucus is a meeting of a political party that occurs at the neighborhood level. Party members meet Tuesday to elect leaders, to elect delegates for the next convention, and to debate and vote on proposals from caucus participants. This year participants will vote for their preferred candidate for President of the US in a binding ballot which determines the amount of delegates each candidate will receive at the convention.

Q: Who gets to participate?
A. Anyone who lives in the precinct can participate as long as s/he is in general agreement with party principles and is eligible to vote in the general election on Nov. 4, 2008. You do not need to be a long-term party member or registered to vote in that district as long as you can show you live there.

Q. Why should I go?
A: --Vote for and organize support for your preferred candidate, including President of the US.
--Learn how party decisions are made and platforms are formed.
--Participate in shaping your political party’s future action and policies.

Workshop presented by Sherilyn Young, volunteer (and Augsburg staff), in collaboration with the Center for Service, Work and Learning. FFI: call 330-1462, youngs@augsburg.edu

Enrollment Verifications From Your Computer

Enrollment Verification is now available on AugNet Records and Registration for Spring Day and Winter WEC terms. Students may obtain their own enrollment verification statement directly from the National Student Clearinghouse from their own computer. For more information on this service, please reference the Registrar web page at:
http://www.augsburg.edu/enroll/registrar/index.html

On this page, click on Enrollment/Degree Verification for more detailed instruction and information. Or, if you are already familiar with this feature, you may log onto AugNet Records and Registration and click on Enrollment Verification in the upper left hand corner menu. Note, the National Student Clearinghouse Enrollment Verification Form you will print off will have a box in the upper right corner to write in an insurance policy number. Please do this as filling in the policy number will aid them in matching up your verification with the correct policy, (which may be a parent’s or spouse’s policy).

Need a transcript now or in the future? The easiest way to do this is to order them online through a secure site. Information on this process can be found on the Registrar web page through the link listed above, then click on “Transcripts”.

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 - 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military connected students we have at Augsburg. We have over 70 students enrolled in Day/WEC/Grad programs--many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institutions ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris, ANG, and 3 others, will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program the Minnesota National Guard has developed which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.
