Instructional and Course Design Opportunity

Instructional and Course Design Summer Stipends
Call for Proposals - Summer 2008

The Instructional and Course Design initiative within the Center for Teaching and Learning invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during Summer 2008 and completed by the end of Fall term 2008. Proposals are Due March 8 and funding decisions will be made before mid-term break. All faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit.

Program Description.

The program funds the critique and design stages separately. Funding levels are intended to provide a realistic option to teaching summer courses in order to re-direct faculty effort to design questions and have a direct impact on the effectiveness of mainline academic year courses.

Four areas are supported under the program at the following levels:

1) design-based critique of an existing course, $1,500
2) revision (resulting from a design-based critique) of an existing course, $2,500
3) design-based critique and revision, or creation of a new course using design methodology, $4,000

Projects that address chronically underperforming courses will be awarded stipends 20% greater than those listed above.

Submission, Selection Process, and Selection Criteria

Proposals should be submitted directly to the Asst. Director for IC&D as Microsoft WORD files attached to an e-mail ‘cover letter’ message. The e-mail address is:

anderstu@augsburg.edu

Proposals are due by March 8, 2008 and should follow the requested format to facilitate evaluation and turnaround. They will be evaluated by the IC&D committee composed of the Asst. Director of CTL for IC&D, a member of the IT staff, a member of the library staff, and a representative from CFD. Decisions will be made before Spring Break.

Projects will be selected on the basis of the overall impact of the proposed student learning improvements, including the need for the project, the significance of the proposed improvements, and the number of students affected.

Project Execution and Compensation.

Kickoff meeting. Awardees will meet with the Asst. Director for IC&D before commencing work on the project as well as during the work. The purpose of the initial meeting is to clarify the expectations of the design process (working from learning objectives to evidence to assessments to choice of instruction) as it relates to each particular project, set a timetable for communication during the project, and make an initial assessment of the project’s probable need for design expertise within the library, IT, or other areas.

Communication during the project. During the project work period, the awardee will maintain communication with the Asst. Director and others as agreed upon in the initial meeting to report progress and acquire assistance with the design effort or access to other expertise as needed.

Final Report. After the project is completed, the awardee will prepare and submit a written report that summarizes the results the work and includes a portfolio of all materials whose modification (before and after versions) or creation resulted from the project. In addition, the awardee will meet with the Asst. Director after the products of the project have been used in class to discuss the extent to which the learning objectives were achieved as well as the effectiveness of the IC&D process in achieving these results.

Stipend Disbursement. Release of stipend funds will occur in two parts: half to be released after a successful initial meeting and the remaining half released after the final report is received and judged acceptable by the IC&D committee.

World Visions Staff Book Group - TOMORROW

World Visions will meet tomorrow, Feb. 13, from noon - 1:15 p.m. in the Riverside Room.

Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," is scheduled to be a presenter at this year's Peace Prize Forum. He has established schools in the most remote poverty stricken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace.

Given this wonderful opportunity to hear him speak at the Peace Prize Forum, we have decided to change our winter book selection to his book, "Three Cups of Tea."

“Three Cups of Tea is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time. Greg Mortenson’s dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it’s proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world.” - Tom Brokaw

We will meet again to discuss the book on Wednesday, March 5 (same time and location)

All staff members are welcome! Books will not be provided this time, so please obtain your own if you would like to participate. This book can be found in the Augsburg bookstore, as well as at other retailers and online sites. If you have already purchased our previous winter book selection, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," hang on to it as we may read it in the spring.

Please RSVP to Holley Locher at locherh@augsburg.edu or x1763 by Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher and Lisa Roe

Want to Show off Your Talent?

On Thursday, March 6, QSU will be hosting its first-ever Queer Talent Show! And we want you to perform! You do not have to be queer to participate! The only rule is what you are performing has to be queer related. So you could sing a song by a queer artist, do slam poetry, do a scene from a play, do a monologue, do a dance, or display your own work as long as it is queer related.

If you are interested in performing, stop by the QSU table this week from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday in the Christensen Center for more information, or e-mail us at qsu@augsburg.edu.

Express yourself at the Queer Talent Show!

Devean George Named to D3hoops.com All-Decade Team

Augsburg alum Devean George '99 named to D3hoops.com All-Decade Team

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/021108george.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/11/08) -- Augsburg College alum Devean George '99 was named to the All-Decade Team of the top NCAA Division III men's basketball players of the past 10 years by D3hoops.com, a national web site that covers Division III basketball, on Monday.

D3hoops.com is celebrating a decade of NCAA Division III men's and women's basketball coverage this month by naming its All-Decade Teams. The web site, which became the first piece of the D3sports.com network at the beginning of the 1997-98 season, honored five teams of five players each from the past 10 seasons. The All-Decade Team was compiled from D3hoops.com All-American teams and selected by D3hoops.com staff.

George was the lone Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player named to the 25-man listing, and joined William Paterson (N.J.) guard Horace Jenkins '01, Illinois Wesleyan guard Korey Coon '00, Lebanon Valley (Pa.) forward Andy Panko '99 and University of Chicago (Ill.) center Derek Reich '03 on the first-team list.

George is in his ninth season in the NBA and currently plays with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, where he has spent the last two seasons. In his career (514 games, 83 starts), the guard/forward has averaged 5.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per-game, playing an average of 18.9 minutes per-game. Battling injuries this season, George has appeared in 25 Mavericks games, averaging 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per-game.

In 1999, the Minneapolis native (Benilde-St. Margaret HS) became the first Division III player ever selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, when the Los Angeles Lakers made him the 23rd overall selection. He became one of only seven players in NBA history to be a member of championship squads in each of his first three seasons in the league, as his Lakers squads won three straight titles (2000-02). He signed as a free agent with the Mavericks in 2006.

In his career at Augsburg, George led the Auggies to two MIAC regular-season championships and berths in the NCAA Division III national playoffs (1997-98 and 1998-99), earning conference MVP honors both times. He earned multiple Division III All-American honors his senior season. He was named a second-team All-American by D3hoops.com his junior season and a first-team All-American his senior year.

He finished his college career with 2,258 career points and 868 career rebounds, both second in school history. While playing in just 96 career games, he fell only 13 points short of the school's scoring record, held by Brian Ammann (1981-85), of 2,271 in 106 games (21.4 per game). George finished his career with a 23.5 points-per-game average, best in school history. Dan Anderson (1961-65) holds the school's career rebounding record with 1,211 (11.5 per game). George finished his career with a 9.0 rebounds-per-game average.

George's college jersey number, 40, was retired by Augsburg in 2003. He wore No. 3 while with the Lakers, but returned to his old college number when he joined the Mavericks.

He is one of only seven players who played Division III basketball to see playing time in the NBA, and he remains the only player who played Division III basketball to ever play in the NBA Finals [Jack Sikma (Illinois Wesleyan '77, Seattle in the finals 1978-79) and Terry Porter (Wisconsin-Stevens Point '85, Portland in the finals 1990-92) played at what are now NCAA Division III schools, but those schools were members of the NAIA during those players' careers.].

George was the third Augsburg player to ever be drafted by an NBA team (Augsburg was an NAIA school prior to 1985), and the second to play professionally at the sport's highest level. Anderson was drafted in the 12th round by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1965. He later played in the ABA with the New Jersey Americans (later New Jersey Nets) from 1967-70. Greg Boone '81, who played for the Auggies from 1979-81, was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as a 10th-round pick in 1981, but never played in the NBA.

Augsburg to Remember Lois Johnson '68 this Weekend

Augsburg to remember alum Lois Hallock Johnson '68 during events this weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (2/11/08) -- Augsburg College will honor the memory of alumnus Lois Hallock Johnson '68 this weekend, donating the proceeds from its five home athletic events to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and a fund for Augsburg women's athletics.

Johnson, wife of Augsburg men's hockey assistant coach (and former boys' hockey coach at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School) Bruce Johnson '68, died on Nov. 26, 2007 after a battle with breast cancer. A teacher, coach and counselor, she worked in the Osseo (Minn.) School District for 36 years, and was a strong supporter of her alma mater. Their three children -- Leah, Thomas and Aaron -- all attended Augsburg.

Ticket proceeds from this weekend's five home athletic events -- Friday's wrestling meet against Wisconsin-Stevens Point (7 p.m.) and men's hockey game against Hamline (7:05 p.m.), and Saturday's men's (1 p.m.) and women's (3 p.m.) basketball games against Concordia-Moorhead and women's hockey game against Hamline (7:05 p.m.) -- will be donated on a 50-50 basis to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and an Augsburg women's athletics fund.

At all the events, pink wristbands will be available for people to wear in honor of Johnson and recognizing the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink shirts to this weekend's events.

For more information, contact the Augsburg athletic department at 612-330-1249.

Femi Solaja Named MIAC Player of the Week

Augsburg's Femi Solaja named MIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for second time this season

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/021108solaja.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/11/08) -- For the second time this season, Augsburg College men's basketball center Femi Solaja (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday. He was named co-Player of the Week this week, joining St. Thomas sophomore guard Joe Scott for the weekly honor.

Solaja collected two point-rebound double-doubles in leading Augsburg in three victories during the past week, part of a five-game winning streak for the Auggies. After starting the season 0-6, Augsburg has rallied with 10 wins in its last 15 games, including five victories in a row and seven victories in its last nine games, to vault itself back into MIAC postseason playoff contention at 10-11 overall, 8-8 in MIAC play.

In last Monday's 75-67 win at St. Olaf, Solaja scored 16 points with 10 rebounds, including 10 points and seven rebounds in the second half as the Auggies outscored the Oles by a 42-34 margin. In Wednesday's 88-71 win over Macalester, Solaja scored 14 points with four rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. In Saturday's 77-64 win over St. John's, Solaja claimed his eighth double-double of the season (12th in his two seasons at Augsburg) with 22 points and 13 rebounds, including 13 points and nine rebounds in the second half as Augsburg rallied from a 35-26 halftime deficit to claim the victory. Solaja also shot 10-of-12 from the free-throw line on Saturday. On the week, Solaja scored 52 points (17.3 ppg) on 20-of-33 shooting (.606) with 27 rebounds (9.0 rpg).

On the season in MIAC statistics (overall play), Solaja is one of only two MIAC players to average a double-double, standing second among MIAC players in overall rebounding (10.7 rpg) and 14th in scoring (14.2 ppg). He also leads the MIAC in field-goal percentage (.620, 124-of-200), as the only conference player in overall play to hit better than 60 percent from the field. Solaja was also named MIAC Player of the Week on Dec. 17.

Solaja transferred to Augsburg last season after playing his first two years at Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Fergus Falls. A junior college preseason All-American in 2005-06, Solaja earned all-conference and all-region honors at MSCTC-FF his sophomore season with a double-double average (17.1 points, 13.6 rebounds per-game). He was a three-time all-conference selection in high school, earning conference MVP and all-state honorable-mention recognition in 2003-04.

This week, Augsburg has a key conference game at league-leader St. Thomas on Wednesday (2/13) at 7:30 p.m., while hosting Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (2/16) at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
