Social Work Department Receives Grant

Augsburg College to Launch Innovative Program to Train Social Workers in Older Adult Care.

The $75,000 Grant from Hartford Foundation is Part of Nationwide Initiative to Grow the Social Work Workforce Needed for Aging Boom.

The Masters of Social Work program at Augsburg College is awarded $75,000 over 3 years to develop an innovative program that prepares social workers to specialize in older adult care. Augsburg will adopt a model developed by the New York Academy of Medicine’s Social Work Leadership Institute, with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation. Called the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education, the program addresses the growing demand for social workers as the nation’s aging population is expected to more than triple by 2050.

The grant will support, through a scholarship and additional learning opportunities, the advanced field placement work of 2nd-year Masters of Social Work students specializing in serving older adults. Augsburg's unique contribution will be to focus on older adults of color. Augsburg was selected, in consortium with the University of Minnesota, in a competitive national peer-review process.

Lars Christiansen's "Singlespeed" at The Nomad TONIGHT

Have you been itching for rock music with meaningful lyrical content?

Want to hear songs about urban planning and the environment ("Blacktops and Treetops"), or bureaucracy and rationalization ("The Iron Cage"), or about resistance to empire ("Glocal"), or a song about workplace relations ("In My Skin/Behavior Rental"), or the Iraq War ("Leaving What Feels Like Home")?

Hear a song with lyrics penned by the late Augsburg poet and professor John Mitchell ("So Ghosts Wear Shoes as if They Have Souls Too").

Lars' new rock project, "Singlespeed," will be holding its official debut on Friday, Feb. 8 at The Nomad World Pub. We are the first of four bands. Doors at 8 p.m., we start playing at 9 p.m. $5 cover. 21+.

The three bands that follow us: Second Class Citizen; Owen Sartori; Candystore.

Singlespeed has been working hard in rehearsals to put on this rock show for YOU!

For those of you who have seen Lars' jazz projects -- this one is ROCK. ROCK. And ROCK. No improvisation. All composed music. With provocative lyrics.

Hoping to see you there!
