Network with Style

On Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m., Alumni Relations; the Center for Service, Work, and Learning; and the Augsburg Business Organization will host a networking event for Augsburg alumni and students. Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.

January is Mentoring Month

"The young adult self depends upon and responds to those individuals and groups that express patterns of meaning resonant with the experience and the new critical awareness of the still fragile, inner-dependent self. There is, however, profound receptiveness to any network of belonging that appears to promise a place of nurture for the potential self, even (and sometimes especially) if its forms are demanding, calling forth the new strength. A place that recognizes the gifts and potential competence of the young adult, and that requires only as much inner-dependent strength as the young adult yet has, meets the yearning for power and communion in their young adult forms.

A mentoring community offers a network of belonging in which young adults feel recognized as who they really are, and as who they are becoming. It offers both challenge and support and thus offers good company for both the emerging strength and the distinctive vulnerability of the young adult."

From "Big Questions Worthy Dreams" by Sharon Daloz Parks, p. 95.

"Sustainable Cities" in Vancouver this July

Professors Lars Christiansen and Nancy Fischer invite YOU to be a part of our exciting new Augsburg Abroad course, "Sustainable Cities in North America." We and 20 students will be going to Portland, Ore., for 1 week, and Vancouver for 2 weeks to explore how both cities are engaged in "green" policies and design! We will explore and experience neighborhoods in both of these extraordinary cities, and meet community organizers, policy makers, and scholars to learn about progressive urban planning initiatives.

AND we are practicing what we preach: we will do the entire trip without the use of a car/van/truck instead relying on planes, trains, bicycles, and our own two feet to get around the city.

To learn more about this course and how to sign-up, please follow the PDF link here:
