Soup & Sexuality TODAY
The first Soup & Sexuality for 2008 will take place today from noon to 1 p.m. in the Century Room.

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - Wednesday
On Wednesday, Jan. 23, Dr. David Crowe, faculty candidate in Biology, will be giving a seminar talk entitled "Neural correlates of spatial cognition in parietal cortex." The seminar will be held from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. in SCI 123. Refreshments will be served.
Vocatio Chapel with Alan Padgett Tomorrow
Augsburg College continues the tradition of the Vocatio Chapel series with Dr. Alan Padgett, Professor of Systematic Theology at Luther Seminary. Dr. Padgett will be speaking in the chapel on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 10:20 a.m.
Dr. Padgett is most particularly interested in the dialogue between theology and science, as well as such varying topics as Christian spirituality, systematic theology, and Christian ethics and the relationship between religion and science. He is currently the editor of the on-line Journal for Christian Theological Research, and he is the general editor of the book series, Sacra Doctrina (Eerdmans).

“Creating Dialogue on Tough Issues: Religion, Politics and Violence” facilitated by Jacqui deVries and Jim Trelstad-Porter. There are 20 spaces reserved for faculty and staff. Costs are paid by the Center for Teaching and Learning. The book “Infidel” by Ayann Hirsi Ali will be available for reading by each participant prior to the retreat. Kevin Locke Native American Dance Ensemble Jan. 28
Kevin Locke Native American Dance Ensemble will be performing a workshop on campus on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. in Si Melby Gymnasium. The event is free and open to everyone!
Kevin Locke is known throughout the world as the pre-eminent player of the indigenous Northern Plains flute, as well as an inspiring hoop dancer, traditional storyteller, cultural ambassador and educator. The dance ensemble represents the Plains nations of Lakota, Anishinabe, and Comanche, the Southeastern tribe Choctaw, and the Woodlands Nations of Ojibwe and Oneida, this one-of-a-kind ensemble of American Indian champions and award winners offers a rich variety of American Indian traditions and aesthetics in dance, instrumentals, song, storytelling, sign language and audience interaction.

Stress Relief Reminders
Counseling & Health Promotion reminds all interested students, faculty and staff about two opportunities today for some stress relief and wellness. First, instead of the regular yoga sessions, we will have Stretch and Strengthen from noon - 1 p.m. in the Marshall Room. This session will be held this week only (Tuesday and again Thursday). Wear comfortable movable clothing and bring a mat. Yoga sessions will begin again next week (Jan. 29).
Tai chi will be offered Tuesday evening from 5 - 6 p.m. in the Century Room (lower level of Christensen Center). All are welcome to join each week as you are able to do so.
Coming in February -- pilates! Watch for further details.

Artist Receptions this Friday, Jan. 25
Please drop by the two artist receptions that are taking place this Friday, Jan. 25 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
The current Gage Family Art Gallery exhibition features the work of seven Minnesota artists all of whom share a Native American heritage but don't want to be labeled as such. You will get the opportunity to meet Carolyn Anderson, Frank Big Bear, Julie Buffalohead, Andrea Carlson, Jim Denomie, Star Wallowing Bull, and Carl Gawboy.
The current Christensen Center Art Gallery exhibition features the mixed-media work of Barbara Harman, a Minneapolis-based artist and teacher.

Augsburg Cares Spring Break Trips
Spring semester has begun, and that means that we can start planning for Spring Break! Actually, Campus Ministry has been planning Spring Break for a while now. But now it’s time for you to join us.
Campus Ministry invites you to three Spring Break opportunities:
1. Minneapolis Spring Break: If you don’t want to go anywhere, then spend time exploring the great city we live in. There will be opportunities for visiting restaurants, cultural events, and service projects. The best part is that there is NO pre-registration. All these offering will be served to you, buffet-style. Please participate in those events that interest you.
2. Southeastern Minnesota Flood Recovery: Spend March 16-20 helping the residents of Rushford, MN rebuild their houses after the floods from last summer. SE MN is in need of skilled volunteers to do construction work (mainly drywall hanging). The cost for the trip is $75. Registration forms are available in the Campus Ministry Office. This registration is open until March 1.
3. New Orleans Hurricane Recovery: This trip is from March 16-21. We will be flying to New Orleans, LA and staying at a disaster recovery camp. During the day, we may engage in either clean-up projects (taking trash out of flooded houses) or construction (i.e., hanging drywall). The cost is $250 for students. Registration forms are available in the Campus Ministry office. Registration forms must be returned with a $100 deposit. Full payment is due Feb. 1.

Residence Life Student Staff Apps Now Available
Residence Life Student Staff Applications are now available in the Residence Life Offices, located in Urness/Mortensen Lobby and the lobby of Anderson Hall. Pick up an application today!

Earn $10 in 10 Minutes - Participate in Research
Do you want to earn an easy $10? All you have to do is participate in a 10-minute research study about crime and psychology! Anyone can participate – students, faculty, and staff. Sign-up sheets are posted by the Psychology offices on the third floor of Memorial Hall, or you can call the psychology desk at x1254 during the following times: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. or Tuesday, Thursday from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. (Note: if the phone is not answered, call again in a few minutes!). The study will only take 10 minutes of your time, and is taking place in Anderson 26 (the basement) in the psychology lab.

Tickets are now on sale for the Augsburg Theatre Department’s production of "The Visit," directed by Luverne Seifert '83. The show will perform Feb. 1,2,7,8 and 9 at 7 p.m., and February 3 and 10 at 2 p.m.

$8 for ACTC faculty and staff
$5 for non-Augsburg students
$2 for Augsburg students and children under 12

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College
Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.
I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.
To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.
Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.
The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.

TRIO/SSS Scholarship Orientation for Spring 2008
Attention TRIO/SSS Students:
Below is information about the upcoming spring TRIO Scholarship Orientation. Students who are interested in applying for the spring 2008 scholarship MUST attend one of the scheduled orientation meetings — NO EXCEPTIONS! If you applied for the TRIO Scholarship in the fall and attended an orientation meeting then, you DO NOT need to attend another one. However, we suggest you read over the requirements for Spring 2008 due to some changes that were made.
The Spring Scholarship Orientation times are:
Wednesday, Jan. 23, noon - 1 p.m. in the Riverside Room, Christensen Center
Friday, Jan. 25, 8 - 9 a.m. in the Minneapolis Room, Christensen Center
All TRIO/SSS Scholarship applicants must be CURRENT, ACTIVE, TRIO/SSS students, and MUST receive a Pell Grant as part of their current financial aid package. Unfortunately, Promise Scholars may not apply for the TRIO Scholarship. Additional requirements will be discussed at the meeting.

AFA Credit Refunds - Jan. 25
Financial aid credit refunds for Augsburg for Adults (AFA) undergraduate and graduate program students including PA, Rochester, and United programs will be available Friday, Jan. 25 after 1 p.m. Rochester checks will be mailed immediately. Other checks will be available for pick-up in the Enrollment Center Friday until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Students will receive a refund check only if their financial aid disbursement is greater than their total tuition and fees for this term. A "credit refund" item will post on your Account Activity in Records & Registration if a check is available for you.
