Last Call for Sustainable Cities -- this Friday

This Friday, Feb. 1, is the DEADLINE for signing up for "Sustainable Cities," offered this Summer II session (July 8 - Aug. 8) by Lars Christiansen and Nancy Fischer. This course explores Portland, Ore. for 1 week and Vancouver, British Columbia for 2 weeks. We will learn from community organizers, public officials, transportation advocates, scholars, and each other as we seek to better understand how to make "green cities."

The future is an urban future. How we develop as an urban world can be done poorly -- causing great and possibly irreparable damage -- or it can be done well, creating sustainable living environments for future generations.

Join us in these beautiful cities to learn how to plan urban life for future generations.

Nobel Peace Prize Forum -- Register Early

20th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum: March 7 - 8
"STRIVING FOR PEACE: INVESTING IN COMMUNITY"
Speakers:
- Dr. Muhammad Yunus, shares the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize with the Grameen Bank which provides low-cost individual loans in Bangladesh to counter prolonged effects of poverty resulting in the creation of economic and social improvements for the “poorest of the poor.”
- Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," established schools in the most remote poverty stricken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace.
- Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, author of "The End of Poverty," director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, special advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and president/co-founder of Millennium Promise Alliance, dedicated to ending extreme global poverty.

The Forum is co-sponsored by Augsburg and will be hosted by Concordia College (Moorhead, MN). The registration fee of $25 includes admission to all conference events, bus transportation, and meals. Students may register to stay in Concordia College student housing at no additional cost. Memorial Blood Center Blood Drive TODAY

Counseling and Health Promotion reminds and invites all interested students, faculty and staff that we Memorial Blood Center will be on campus today for our blood drive. This is a great, convenient opportunity to give back to the community through your blood donation.

If you did not schedule a donation time already, walk-ups are welcome to stop by as well. Several spots are available from 9:15 - 10:15 p.m. this morning and also 1:15 - 2:30 p.m. The blood drive runs from 9 a.m. - 3p.m. in the East Commons of Christensen Center (upstairs).

If you are donating, please eat good meals today, drink a lot of water, and bring a photo ID to the East Commons.

Focus the Nation presents the live nationwide webcast of "The 2% Solution" -- featuring sustainability expert Hunter Lovins and environmental justice advocate Van Jones!

Join Michael Lansing in the Minneapolis Room, Christensen Center, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, for this official kickoff of Focus the Nation at Augsburg!

Focus the Nation is happening this Thursday, Jan. 31, all day! This is an environmental awareness event put on by a variety of groups and individuals around
campus and is also taking place at thousands of businesses, high schools, churches, and campuses nationwide!

It will be a day of frank discussion and learning about climate change but also hopes to create some concrete action from the campus community.

One of our goals is to educate as many students as possible -- so encourage your students to attend the events or even bring your entire class to a session!

Staff Recognition Event - April 3

Please mark your calendar for the annual Staff Recognition and Length of Service Awards Event to be held Thursday, April 3 at 3 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.

One staff member from each division, five total, will be recognized at this event for the positive difference he or she makes at Augsburg College. Recipients of the Staff Recognition Award are those individuals who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions and consistently go above and beyond the call of duty by providing exceptional service to others and/or making innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg community.

We are looking for your nominations for these awards. Forms can be found in the Staff Senate PUBLIC folder, Employee of the Year file. To make sure we have a broad selection of candidates to consider, each division’s Vice President will be asked to nominate three staff members from their division and supply supporting documentation.

Please return the nomination form and all letters of recommendation by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 14 to: Lisa Roe, Staff Senate, Campus Box #65.

** Please note: Current Staff Senate members are not eligible to receive this award.

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.
