Get Involved in Advent Vespers

Advent Vespers - All Students are Invited

Please consider being a part of the liturgical party at this year's Advent Vespers. It's not difficult. In fact, all you do is carry a candle (or maybe a banner). Advent Vespers is at Central Lutheran Church on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 (there are two services per night). You can sign up to volunteer for one or both evenings.

There are also two rehearsals in the evening the week of Vespers, so you will have practice. More information on that to follow.

We are in need of about 40 more participants, so your help would be most appreciated. Please follow the link to register (so your name can be included in the bulletin). The link also has more information.

Goliard Society of Medievalists to Meet Nov. 18

Salvete! Huzzah!

This message is to let you know that the Goliard Society of Medievalists will meet this Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in Lindell 301. We will have a brief business meeting to make introductions, discuss the next Mardi Gras Madrigals (Feb. 5), and some other items.

After the meeting, we'll play medieval board games, as we have in the past. These are NOT "Dungeons & Dragons"-type games, but they are authentic, historic games that were played in the Middle Ages.

Refreshments will be served. All are welcome, so bring a friend.

Leadership Workshop, Nov. 15: Living Leadership

The Center for Leadership Studies (CLS) invites you to attend “Creating New Paths through Social Entrepreneurship,” a workshop presented by Barbara Hensley. After Hensley lost two sisters to breast cancer, she became painfully aware of the challenges faced by underserved women who are fighting the disease. Her response was to leave her 25-year career as a successful corporate executive and create the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer™, a social enterprise that channels a percentage of revenue directly to those touched by the disease. Hope Chest raises funds for its foundation through retail stores that sell designer women’s clothing, accessories, and up-scale furniture donated from individuals and corporations. Hensley will share her story, focusing on the development of her unique business model and the challenges of expanding her business.

Date and time: Thursday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. (refreshments at 5:30 p.m.)
Location: Marshall Room, Christensen Center

For more information or to reserve a space, contact Patty Park at 612-330-1150 or parkp@augsburg.edu.

Keeping Track of Auggies

CSWL's Auggies Engaged in Action: Melanie Wittwer

Welcome back to CSWL's weekly student spotlight, Auggies Engaged In Action. This week's Auggie is Melanie Wittwer, a 2nd year artist and aspiring teacher following her dreams as an Art & Education major.

You may know that Melanie is a talented visual artist in her own right. You may also know that she has a penchant for words and writes columns for Inside Augsburg. You might even be aware that she loves working as an Augsburg Reads tutor with the elementary and middle school Somali youth from the neighborhood.

But what she'll never come out and tell you is that she has decided to take her passion and education to the next level by designing and implementing a monthly art project for the youth she works with at Augsburg Reads. Not only was our community partner, the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota, excited by the proposition, they agreed to help supply the materials and market the day to the youth they work with.

So, you ask, how's it going so far? They've only met once, but it was perhaps the most well attended tutoring session of the year! We're told that even students who NEVER come to the tutoring sessions wandered in the door to get the chance to do create papier-mache gargoyles with Melanie. Of course, they knew she was talented. She helped to design and paint a two-wall mural for the Youth Center last year!

Great work, Melanie! Your initiative has earned you many young friends in the community and your resume-building, community-enhancing, creatively conjured approach to life will certainly serve you well as you carve your niche in the world!

Stay tuned next Wednesday for another CSWL spotlight...

The captains of the eight teams were also sent an e-mail with some basic rules for league as well as the schedule for tomorrow night's games. Please check out what time your team plays sooner rather than later to ensure that everyone on your team is aware that the league is starting and what time your team plays. We look forward to seeing you all on the field.
