Seminaries Are Coming to You

If you aren’t able to go to the Seminary and Divinity School Fair (since you missed the registration deadline), you are still in luck. Representatives from the eight ELCA seminaries are going to be on campus this Thursday, Nov. 8 all morning. Ron Olson, Director of Admissions for Luther Seminary, will preach in chapel at 11:20 a.m. All the other seminaries are going to be present at chapel and in the Atrium during the morning.

They are interested in eating lunch with students and having informal conversation. Please take some time to talk with these representatives about your plans for the future.

The best part about the representatives is that they really want to help you discern your best vocational path. Don’t feel ashamed if you don’t choose their particular seminary. They want you to fulfill your own calling, even if that means a different school.

For more information on Seminaries and Divinity Schools, contact Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu.

"Help Wanted" - a Play about Women Immigrants

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

On Tuesday this week, a group of performers will be on campus to portray a Hispanic/Latino life-experience play called “Help Wanted.” It is a timely event considering the issues raised by “Immigration and Immigrants,” and the lack of understanding of the many others issues documented or undocumented immigrants face daily in the Twin Cities. The invitation:

Coalition for Student Activism (CSA) and Campus Ministry invite our Augsburg community to a play by Teatro Del Pueblo (The People’s Theatre) on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. in the fish bowl by the coffee shop in CC.

Teatro Del Pueblo (The People’s Theatre) is a theatre group from Minneapolis that promotes cultural pride in the Latino community and performs beautiful plays educating people about the Latino culture and promoting cultural diversity in the arts. They will be performing “Help Wanted,” a play about two women who moved to the US, worked in a hotel, and faced deportation when trying to join the local labor union.

After “Help Wanted” there will be a panel discussion about immigration.
It should be a great event. Your support is appreciated.

Please come, you are invited. See you Tuesday!

All are welcome to join Campus Ministry in Science 123 on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. as we show the documentary "Jesus Camp" and facilitate discussion afterwards.

Join us for a thought-provoking conversation! Please contact Kristen, hoyles@augsburg.edu for more information.

Renowned Kenyan Novelist to Visit Campus

Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, the Renowned Kenyan Novelist, Playwright, and Essayist, and author of our Many Voices text, "The River Between," is coming to Augsburg. He will be on Campus to give a Public Lecture and do a reading from his sprawling latest novel, "The Wizard of the Crow." The lecture and reading will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel of Augsburg College’s Foss Center.

This writer has sustained prolific productivity for decades, with some 25 books to his name and at least six distinguished Literary Awards for his work. Always a champion of the dispossessed and a relentless critic of political corruption in his country, Ngugi lived in political exile from his country of birth and citizenship for 22 years, having survived a year of detention without trial for his writing and other literary activities. He has also confronted with remarkable stamina, persistence, and consistency the somewhat intractable question of the role of language in cultural imperialism. He continues efforts to empower the languages of formerly colonized nations in his important role as director of the International Center for Writing and Translation at the University of California, Irvine.

Ngugi’s visit is being sponsored by Augsburg’s English Department, the General Education program, and the Center for Global Education, and the ACTC’s Creative Writing Program. The lecture will complement the ongoing 25th Anniversary program of the Center for Global Education, and it is open to the public.
