Scholastic Connections Mentor Profile

Mentor Tony Genia Jr., MD, received his BA from Augsburg College in 1985. During his undergraduate education, he served as President of the Augsburg College Intertribal Student Union (1983-1985). He attended the University of Minnesota Medical School, during which time he served on the Executive Council of the Association of Native American Medical Students (including as chairperson from 1989-90). Tony then attended the University of New Mexico, completing residency in emergency medicine at the University of New Mexico Hospital in 1993. Currently, he is certified as a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. His principal practice is at the Fairview Lakes Clinic in Ham Lake. Tony was elected to the Augsburg College Board of Regents in October of 2004.

Tony is mentoring Nou Chang. This is their first year working together.

CTL Night at the Theater

Augsburg Abroad Faculty Proposals Available

Interested in leading a short-term study abroad experience in 2008-09 academic year? Curious what goes into planning and leading a course abroad? The 2008-09 proposal form and process are now available at the Augsburg Abroad web site (www.augsburg.edu/augsburgabroad) and in the Office of International Programs Public folder under “Augsburg Abroad.” Those interested in leading a program with a very limited audience (only students from one curriculum/department) or for graduate students only should contact Andrea Wojtanowicz.

Have questions about the proposal requirements? Interested in consulting on locations or course ideas? Contact Andrea Wojtanowicz, Faculty-led Programs Coordinator, at wojtanow@augsburg.edu or x1669.

The deadline for submitting proposals is Dec. 15, 2007. Proposals will be reviewed in January and the roster of short-term programs for 2008-09 will be announced in February.

Seminaries Are Coming to You – with Lunch, Too

If you aren’t able to go to the Seminary and Divinity School Fair (since you missed the registration deadline), you are still in luck. Representatives from the eight ELCA seminaries are going to be on campus this Thursday, Nov. 8 all morning. They will have a display in the Foss Atrium starting at 10 a.m. Ron Olson, Director of Admissions for Luther Seminary, will preach in chapel at 11:20 a.m. All the other seminaries are going to be present at chapel and in the Atrium during the morning.

They are interested in eating lunch with students and having informal conversation. Think about joining them in the cafeteria for some lunch (on Campus Ministry) and vocational discernment. Please take some time to talk with these representatives about your plans for the future.

The best part about the representatives is that they really want to help you discern your best vocational path. Don’t feel ashamed if you don’t choose their particular seminary. They want you to fulfill your own calling, even if that means a different school.

Career Symposium for the Arts

We wanted to let you know of our upcoming event!

The Department of Art History at the University of St. Thomas is sponsoring a Career Symposium at 7 p.m. on Monday evening, Nov. 12. We will have a panel of four Twin Cities arts professionals discuss the paths they've taken to their current position. The symposium is designed to inspire students of art history and other arts-related disciplines to form concrete, creative and positive career plans. There will be ample opportunity for Q&A with the panel members.

Here's a tip as you use the new student Webmail system: use the "Read Mail" button when opening messages! The "Read Mail" button is at the top of the Webmail screen; click it before opening your messages and the system will know that you want to view the contents of your e-mail (this is especially helpful if your messages are showing up empty).

Go online to http://www.augsburg.edu/stucomp/email/webmail_overview.html for general information about how to use the new system, including viewing all your old e-mail folders.

Midtown Greenway Bridge Opening

Come celebrate the Midtown Greenway Bridge Opening!
Thursday, Nov. 8
4 - 6 p.m.

****Celebration to take place at 28th Street and 21st Avenue.****

Minnesota's first cable-stayed bridge – the Midtown Greenway's final phase – is complete. The bridge's completion fulfills a vision spanning more than a century: linking the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes and the Mississippi River. The Greenway's bicycle and pedestrian paths offer the county a true transportation alternative. Minneapolis is the second largest bike commuter city in the nation.

Light refreshments will be served.

International Education Week

Augsburg College is celebrating International Education Week, this week, Nov. 5 – 9, 2007. Celebrating and promoting international education and exchange, International Education Week (IEW) is a a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to recognize the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries.

In honor of IEW, OIP is posting International Facts in addition to activities all week long. Today, we will focus on international facts that relate to world geography and population:

Intramural Soccer and Three-on-Three Basketball Info

Intramurals are still taking rosters for the first eight teams to sign-up for co-ed soccer until this Thursday, Nov. 8, with four teams currently in. Co-ed means there must be a minimum of three women on the field of the seven players allowed at all times – what you do with the other four players is up to you. Other rules can be found on the Auggie Athletics web page under indoor soccer league. Rosters and other information can be found downstairs in Si Melby next to the IM board.

Also, intramurals is planning a one night/day three-on-three basketball tournament for sometime in late November or early December. Keep your eyes open on the IM board or through A-Mail for additional information about the tournament.
