Message: Augsburg's Chris Brown named as finalist for AHCA Division III National Coach of the Year honors

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/031907brown.html

MINNEAPOLIS (3/19/07) -- Augsburg men's hockey head coach Chris Brown was named as one of 12 finalists for the Edward Jeremiah Award as the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, the American Hockey Coaches Association has announced.

It is the fourth time that Brown has been a finalist for the award, with the previous three coming while he coached at Marian (2000-04). Former Augsburg head coach Mike Schwartz earned the AHCA National Coach of the Year honor in the 1997-98 season, and former coach Ed Saugestad was named NAIA National Coach of the Year three times.

Last week, Brown was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, marking the eighth time an Augsburg coach has earned MIAC Men's Hockey Coach of the Year honors. Saugestad earned the honor six times in his career, while Schwartz earned the honor in the 1997-98 season.

In his first year as the Auggies head coach, Brown led the Auggies to a 12-10-4 record and third-place conference finish (9-3-4), as the Auggies clinched a berth in the MIAC playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The record was a three-win improvement overall and four-win improvement in league play from last season.

Brown returned to Augsburg last season as an assistant coach under Schwartz, a position he also served in during the 1996-97 season. After leaving Augsburg in 1997, he had served as assistant coach at Division I Alaska-Anchorage for three years, then served as head coach at Marian (Wis.) for four seasons (2000-04) and at Hamline for one season (2004-05). His career coaching record is now 81-66-12.

Message: Augsburg's Aaron Johnson named AHCA/RBK Hockey Division III All-American for second straight year

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/031907johnson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (3/19/07) -- For the second straight year, Augsburg College men's hockey forward Aaron Johnson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) earned a first-team selection on the American Hockey Coaches Association/RBK Hockey Division III All-American squad, it was announced during the NCAA Division III National Championships over the weekend in Superior, Wis.

Johnson is one of only two repeat honorees among the 24 selections to the first and second teams, and the lone player who was a first-team All-America selection both last season and this season.

Johnson was also one of eight finalists for the Sid Watson Award, given by the AHCA to the Division III National Player of the Year. Manhattanville (N.Y.) goalie Andrew Gallant received this year's honor, with Wisconsin-River Falls forward T.J. Dahl named the runner-up.

Johnson is Augsburg's 30th men's hockey All-American in school history, and one of only four Auggies to earn All-American honors twice; Terry Brown (1981, 1982), Brian Gauger (1979, 1980) and Gary Hughes (1977, 1978) are the others.

The AHCA awards 24 individuals to first and second teams of All-Americans from the East and West regions. All-Americans are selected by men's hockey coaches who are members of the AHCA. The award is sponsored by RBK Hockey, an international leader in hockey equipment.

The award is the latest honor for Johnson this season. Last week, he was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Year, and earned All-MIAC honors for the third straight year. Earlier this season, he was also selected to compete in the NCAA Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held at the NCAA Division I men's hockey Frozen Four in St. Louis, Mo., on April 6, one of just two NCAA Division III players to be selected among the 32 participants. Johnson was named a Preseason All-USCHO Division III West Region honoree this season by U.S. College Hockey Online.

Johnson finished the regular season with 15 goals and team-highs of 27 assists and 42 points. His assist total led the MIAC in overall stats for the second straight year, and he finished third in the MIAC in overall points. His goal total was fifth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics. In league games only, Johnson stood third in assists (16), second in goals (12) and fourth in points (28). Among Division III players nationally, Johnson finished 13th in assists per-game (1.04) and 18th in points per-game (1.62). Last season, Johnson led the country in both assists per-game (1.44) and points per-game (1.96).

This season, he had either a goal or assist in 20 of Augsburg's 26 games, with multiple-point efforts 11 times. He tied the school's single-game point record of seven twice this season -- in an 8-0 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Dec. 16 and in a 9-2 win over Hamline (including his first collegiate hat trick) on Feb. 24.

In his career (81 games, 76 at Augsburg), Johnson finished with 126 points (38 goals, 88 assists). He played his freshman season at Division I Michigan Tech (five games, no scoring).

Augsburg finished the 2006-07 season with a 12-10-4 record and third-place conference finish (9-3-4), as the Auggies clinched a berth in the MIAC playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The record was a three-win improvement overall and four-win improvement in league play from last season.

Johnson was the lone MIAC player named to the first team from the West Region. St. Thomas forward Nick Pernula and defenseman Ryan VanBockel were named to the second team, along with St. Olaf defenseman John Paulson.
