Four workshops intended to enable faculty to use a systematic, purposeful approach to revising, creating, and maintaining learning experiences. All workshops are offered twice and are scheduled from 3:30-5:00 PM in Lindell 301 unless otherwise posted (dates are indicated below).

Faculty considering applying for Instructional and Course Design support for Summer 2007 are encouraged to attend.

1) How did we learn to teach? March 14 and 14. Bring your resume’ and some examples of your best (and worst, if your dare!) teaching for an exploration of how we got here and who we learned our art from. We’ll explore our approaches to creating learning experiences, how we detect that something needs to be changed, and how we proceed to change them.

2) Teaching and Brain Science –ne’er the twain shall meet? March 27 and 28. Bring what you have come to believe about brain science and learning and compare it with what some current experts have to say. How do the various ways we teach work with or against brain function? What does brain science tell us about crafting learning environments and experiences that are efficient and produce durable results?

3) Brain science, ‘best practice’, and instructional design April 9 and 10. Bring your favorite ‘best practice’ guiding principles for an exploration of the relationship between these and brain science and how this can inform intentional choice in crafting learning experiences.

4) The designing professor: changing students on purpose April 24 and 25. Bring a learning experience you’ve been working on to dip your pedagogical toes into the waters of design. We’ll work with a process that starts by identifying the change(s) we want in our students and progresses systematically (but not too fast!) to creating experiences that not only change and empower students, but also enable us to develop a habit of reflective empathy in our work.

FACULTY SUMMER RESEARCH GUIDELINES 2007


DESCRIPTION:

This grant provides support of faculty scholarly activity during the summer months. Scholarship is broadly defined to include disciplinary scholarship, the scholarship of application, interdisciplinary scholarship, and the scholarship of teaching. Examples of previous successful proposals are on file in the Center for Teaching and Learning.

"Scholarship of Teaching" typically goes beyond course development and/or revision and has as its audience other faculty and professionals in the field.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Proposals should show evidence of thorough preparation and meet the following criteria:
• Clear statement of realistic goals and objectives
• Appropriate and detailed project method/plan for achieving the goals and objectives
• Explanation of advance preparation and planning
• Clear description of the project's assessment
• Detailed timeline and budget


FUNDING: Up to $2000 is awarded per grant and 2-3 awards are typically made per year.
Source: Grangaard Faculty Development Fund.
Funding decisions are made by the Faculty Development Committee. All funds must be requested by the end of the fiscal year in which the grant is awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: These grants are for Faculty. Priority is given to full time tenure track faculty. Priority is also given to faculty whohave not received this grant in the previous three year period.

Requirements of the grant include completion of the following:

Message: Dollar/Sense 2007 was the recent financial literacy program at Augsburg. It wrapped up one day early on February 28th in the midst of blizzard conditions. During the seven nights of this event, 14 people walked away with the Suze Orman tome, “Young, Broke and Fabulous” -truly a primer on financial knowledge for fabulous Auggies… 10 people are now decked out in sweet Auggie gear … four people won i-pod shuffles… and two students won $500 scholarships. But most importantly, over 200 students attended throughout the two week event and everyone left with some pretty important knowledge.

Universal lessons learned: 1# Net pay is totally dismal compared to gross pay, thus roommates are cost effective. 2# Compound interest has magical properties. #3 YOU alone build your credit score.

This event was a success because of the inquisitive students at Augsburg-- and also because of the collaboration and enthusiasm from the following campus departments: Sodexho, Event Services, CCHP, the Wrestling Team, StepUp, TRIO, Residence Life, Alumni Relations and Development, Office of the President, and Weekend College.

MINNEAPOLIS (3/12/07) -- Augsburg College men's hockey head coach Chris Brown was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, in conference awards announced recently.

In his first year as the Auggies head coach, Brown (pictured at left) led the Auggies to a 12-10-4 record and third-place conference finish (9-3-4), as the Auggies clinched a berth in the MIAC playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The record was a three-win improvement overall and four-win improvement in league play from last season.

Brown returned to Augsburg last season as an assistant coach under Mike Schwartz, a position he also served in during the 1996-97 season. After leaving Augsburg in 1997, he had served as assistant coach at Division I Alaska-Anchorage for three years, then served as head coach at Marian (Wis.) for four seasons (2000-04) and at Hamline for one season (2004-05). His career coaching record is now 81-66-12.

It is the eighth time an Augsburg coach has earned MIAC Men's Hockey Coach of the Year honors. Ed Saugestad earned the honor six times in his career, while Mike Schwartz earned the honor in the 1997-98 season.

MINNEAPOLIS (3/12/07) -- Augsburg College women's hockey forward Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey team, while teammates Jackie Keller (Jr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) and Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors, it was announced recently. Keller was also selected to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

It is the second straight year that Magnuson was named to the All-MIAC team. Magnuson led the MIAC in overall goals (23) this season, while also contributing seven assists for 30 points (seventh-most among league players). Her 17 goals in league play were also tops among conference players, while her 20 points were tied for seventh-most. Nationally, her 0.92 goals-per-game average currently ranks second-highest among NCAA Division III players. She had at least one goal or assist in 19 of Augsburg's 25 games this season, and had multiple-point games nine times. She had multi-goal games five times, with a hat trick in Augsburg's 6-6 tie with St. Olaf on Dec. 2. She was named MIAC Player of the Week on Jan. 10, after Augsburg's nonconference sweep of Wesleyan (Conn.).

After two seasons at Augsburg (50 games), Magnuson has 44 career goals, already the third-most in school history, behind the 68 of Angie Rieger (1997-2001) and 55 of Lauren Chezick (2001-05). Her 23 goals this season is tied for third-most in a single-season in school history; the record is 27 goals, set by Rieger in the 1999-2000 season.

Keller finished third on the team, and tops among the team's defenders, in total scoring with one goal and a team-high 10 assists for 11 points. Her 11 points were eighth-highest among MIAC defenders this season, and her 10 points in league play (one goal, nine assists) were tied for sixth-best among league defenders. In her career (74 games) at Augsburg, Keller has four goals and 18 assists for 22 points.

Keller was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. As a women's soccer midfielder, Keller was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V second team this season. She is a psychology major with a 3.70 grade-point-average.

Menth played in all but one game in goal for the Auggies this season, building a 3.20 goals-against-average and .906 save percentage. She finished with an 8-11-5 record.

This season, Menth collected 30 or more saves in 15 of her 24 starts, with 40 or more saves in six games. She earned MIAC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 23, after stopping 70 of 76 shots she faced in a series split with St. Thomas.

Under 12th-year head coach Jill Pohtilla, Augsburg finished 8-12-5 overall, 5-9-4 in MIAC play in 2006-07. After starting the season winless in November and December (0-6-3), Augsburg went 8-6-2 the rest of the way, including a stretch of seven wins in nine games midway through the season. This year's team featured no seniors, and 12 letterwinners will return next year.

Hau (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Chris Johnson (Fr., Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) were named to the All-Rookie team and also received honorable-mention All-MIAC honors, while Greg May (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) was named honorable-mention All-MIAC. Thomas Erickson (Sr., Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley, Minn.) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Aaron Johnson, a three-time All-MIAC honoree and All-American first-team selection last season, became the first Auggie to earn MIAC Player of the Year honors in men's hockey since Jaro Cesky earned the honor in the 2002-03 season.

Johnson finished the regular season with 15 goals and team-highs of 27 assists and 42 points. His assist total led the MIAC in overall stats for the second straight year, and he finished third in the MIAC in overall points. His goal total was fifth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics. In league games only, Johnson stood third in assists (16), second in goals (12) and fourth in points (28). In his career (81 games, 76 at Augsburg), Johnson finished with 126 points (38 goals, 88 assists). He played his freshman season at Division I Michigan Tech.

Nagurski earned All-MIAC honors for the fourth straight season, his third as a first-team selection. He was an honorable-mention selection his freshman season. Nagurski finished with 40 points, including a team-high 17 goals to go with 23 assists. In MIAC play, Nagurski finished fifth in overall points and was third in goals, while standing fourth in assists. In league games only, Nagurski was fifth in points (25), second in goals (12) and sixth in assists (13). In his four seasons at Augsburg (98 games), Nagurski finished with 60 career goals and 58 assists for 118 points.

Georgell transferred to Augsburg last season from Wisconsin-River Falls and established himself as one of the top defenders for the Auggies, earning team co-captain honors this season. This year, Georgell finished with one goal and 12 assists for 13 points. Georgell ranked eighth among conference defenders in scoring in both all games (tied for third in assists) and conference games only (eight assists and nine points, tied for fourth in assists). In 39 games at Augsburg during his two seasons, Georgell scored three goals with 17 assists for 20 points.

Kent was Augsburg's primary goalie this year, with a 10-8-4 record, .898 save percentage and 2.70 goals-against-average. His GAA was second-best among MIAC goalies in overall play and 24th-best nationally among Division III players this season, while his save percentage was fourth-best among MIAC goalies overall. In league games only, Kent's 2.60 GAA was fourth-best, and his .901 save percentage was also fourth-best.

Hau was third on the team in scoring this season, with 10 goals and had 11 assists for 21 points. His point total was third-best among MIAC freshmen in overall scoring this year, and his goal total was second-best among league newcomers. In conference games only, Hau's scoring total of 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) was second-highest among league freshmen, and his seven goals were tied for the conference high among newcomers.

Chris Johnson finished fifth on the team in scoring this season, with eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points. His point total was fifth-best among MIAC freshmen in overall scoring this season, and his goals total was tied for third-most. In league play only, Johnson's scoring total of 16 points (seven goals, nine assists), was fourth-highest among league freshmen, and his seven goals joined Hau's total, along with two others, for the conference high among freshmen.

May finished fourth on the team in scoring this season, with 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points. His 11 goals ranked 11th-highest among MIAC players in overall play, while his seven goals in conference games-only were tied for seventh-best among league players. May played in 100 career games at Augsburg, with 22 goals and 24 assists for 46 points.

Erickson, who was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, played in all 26 Auggie varsity games this season, with two goals and one assist for three points. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
