Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: Last year Augsburg graduated 12 American Indian students.

This year there are 47 self-identified AI students at our college: 22 in Day, 18 in WEC and 7 in the following grad programs: MAE-3, MAL-2, MBA-1, MSW-1.

These 47 students represent 21 tribal nations. For undergraduates, the top 4 majors are: American Indian Studies, Education, Sociology and Business. Five Day students are double majoring. For 3 of those students, AIS is one of their majors.

Our first AI McNair Scholar, Ben Burgess, went from Augsburg to UC Davis where he is ABD in Native American Studies with a focus in Literature.

We at Augsburg have much to be proud of!

Subject: Lutheran Scholars Opportunity at Harvard

Submitter:
Bruce R Reichenbach, Professor, Philosophy

Message: CULTIVATING AUTHENTICITY:
Negotiating Difference in a Plural World
The Lutheran Academy of Scholars Summer Seminar
Currier House, Harvard University July 8-21, 2007 (tentative dates)
The Lutheran Academy of Scholars invites faculty from all fields of study to consider how they might provide intellectual leadership for the common good and explore reasons for expanding their activity into larger academic and civic arenas. The 2007 conversation will consider the powerful challenge to Lutheran theoretical identity presented by the politically, religiously and culturally diverse world in which we live. Is this challenge a bane or a blessing for traditional Lutheran thought and practice? Are all diverse perspectives of equal value? Are traditional positions worth preserving? What is required, individually and institutionally, to maintain Lutheran integrity in the face of a diverse world? These are but a few of the questions this seminar will entertain. Participants from the social sciences (broadly construed) and the humanities will bring their own specialization to bear on the discussion and carry out a related scholarly project of their own design. A weekend follow-up session in the summer 2008 will focus upon those projects.

Eight to ten seminar members will be selected. Each will receive $2,000.00 stipend for participation in the seminar and the follow-up session as well as expenses for travel, lodging and a $400 per diem.
Seminar Leader: Ronald F. Thiemann, Professor of Theology and Religion & Society, Harvard University, Divinity School and Faculty Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership
Applications are due February 15, 2007. Seminar participants will be selected by March 1, 2007. Applications should include: a letter of application, a current c. v., a one-page description of the applicant’s scholarly project, and a letter of endorsement from the applicant’s dean. Institutions not currently members of the Academy will be responsible for a $1000 subsidy for seminar expenses. Please send applications to Gregg Muilenburg, Director, Lutheran Academy of Scholars, Concordia College, 901 8th St. So., Moorhead MN 56562, muilenbu@cord.edu.

We apologize to anyone we may have offended. That was not our intent. We’d also like to state that some opinions shared during a paid-for topic may not be supported by KAUG, we were being fair to those donating the money.

We’d also like to give a big thank you to the Admissions and Coffee Shop staff for putting up with us and we apologize for any annoyance the filibuster may have caused. You are all awesome!

Thank you once again for those who stayed to listen, donated, and especially to those who put up with us. We appreciate it.
