Subject: MLK Campus Discussion Forums: The World House

Submitter:
Alice Kloker, Program Coordinator, Center for Global Education

Message: As part of MLK Day this year, we are inviting all Augsburg College students, faculty and staff together for a series of discussion forums on the subject of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s essay "The World House," available for download at www.theworldhouse.org

Written in 1967, this essay looks at the triple evils of racism, poverty and militarism, and how we might move forward as a global community to eliminate these threats to human survival.

The first discussion forum will address the theme of poverty, and will take place on Friday, November 17 from 2-3 p.m. in the Center Commons in the Christensen Center.

The second forum will take place on Friday, December 8 from 2-3 p.m. in the Marshall room and will address the topic of racism. The final all-campus forum will take place on Friday, January 26 (2007) from 2-3 pm in the Marshall room and examine the subject of militarism.

Refreshments will be provided for this event. All are welcome to attend. We would ask that you come having read the essay, either in its entirety or from selections available on the website.

We hope you will be able to take advantage of these opportunities for campus learning and dialogue

In the spirit of MLK,

Alice Kloker and the MLK Day 2007 Planning Committee

Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did you Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: Augsburg's American indian Student Services program was founded by Bonnie Wallace (Fond du Lac) in 1978 following work by a task force looking into higher education accessibility for American Indians primarily in the Phillips neighborhood. Bonnie served as director until 1996. Since its inception, there have only been two directors of the program.

Augsburg has offered classes in American Indian Studies since the 1980's. Contemporary American Indians and Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective were the first courses offered. In 1990 the AIS program began adding eight courses to the curriculum including Ojibwe language. Dr. Mildred Mueller (Mike)(Sault Ste. Marie, Education Department and former Regent) and Bonnie Wallace put together the proposal creating the program. Dr. Virginia Allery (Turtle Mountain, Education Dept.) coordinated the program from 1990-1999. Dr. Eric Buffalohead (Ponca) succeeded Dr. Allery in 2000.

Augsburg has been able to offer students a major in AIS since 2004. In March 2006 faculty approved department status for AIS.

Answer to yesterday's question:
There are 7 Aninshinaabe reservations in MN: Red Lake, Bois Forte, Grand Portage, Fond du Lac, White Earth, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs. There are 4 Dakota reservations: Prairie Island, Shakopee, Upper Sioux and Lower Sioux.

Subject: ACTC Bus Schedule for Spring

Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: We have responded to student concerns and restructured the ACTC intercampus bus schedule effective January 29, 2007. The changes should reduce the average travel time for bus riders. The new bus schedule can be found at http://www.associatedcolleges-tc.org/bussched3.htm .

We felt the level of student concern at several institutions warranted the mid-year schedule change. We hope the change will not be disruptive to too many people. If there are questions, please contact me.
