Message: Some basic Ojibwe:
Boozhoo = Greetings
Aniin = Hello
Giga-waabamin = I'll see you
Mii-gwech = Thank you

There are no cuss words in the Ojibwe language.

Often at ceremonies you will hear: "Mitakuye Oyasin". This is a Lakota term meaning "We are all related" of "All my relations".

Subject: Chapel talk kicks off International Education Week

Submitter:
Andrea Wojtanowicz, Short Term Program Coordinator, International Programs

Message: Join us at Chapel on Monday, November 13 to kick off International Education Week. Hear from Bev Stratton and students about their Lilly-sponsored short-term study abroad program to El Salvador in January 2006. They learned about vocation from the people of El Salvador, and considered the question: How can we work together to create communities, nations, and a world infused with love and faith, in a world often troubled by violence, injustice, and apathy? The Office of International Programs will host the community time following Monday's chapel service.

Join us for another Chapel talk addressing international issues on Thursday, November 16. Shamani-Jeffrey Shikwambi, a new Augsburg staff member in the Center for Global Education, will address his roots and experience growing up as a Lutheran during the apartheid era in Namibia.

These events are two of many International Education week activities at Augsburg. IEW is a nationwide joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. See future A-mail issues and flyers on campus for other IEW events.

Subject: Brad Holt Presentation TODAY

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: NEH Seminar Presentation by Dr. Brad Holt, November 10th

St. Francis of Assisi in the Thirteenth Century: A Life in Art and Text
Friday, November 10, 3:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room. Refreshments served.

Francis is one of the best known saints in Christian history, but he is often reduced to a garden ornament. This presentation will give a fuller picture of the life and vocational struggles of the Patron Saint of Ecology and founder of the Franciscan Orders. Getting to the "historical Francis" is a similar problem to that of the "historical Jesus," and Francis is often understood to be that disciple of Jesus who most closely followed Jesus' footsteps. Francis lived a carefree life both before and after the dramatic changes in his life. His example is a challenge to our day in ecology, interfaith relations, and personal spirituality.

Dr. Brad Holt, Professor of Religion, participated in a National Endowment of the Humanities Seminar in the summer of 2006, devoted to an interdisciplinary study of Francis. The group of 15 professors stayed in Rome for one week, Siena three weeks, and Assisi for two, each pursuing different projects with regard to Francis, and discussing the earliest texts and paintings.
