Message: The walkway access between Parking Lot L and Murphy Park (behind the new athletic field bleachers) will be closed from Wednesday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Nov. 17 for concrete work. Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: The Indian Education division of the Minnesota State Department of Education receives $1.7 million per year for scholarships for AI students attending post-secondary institutions in Minnesota. Roughly half the AI students at Augsburg receive scholarship assistance from the Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program. Their maximum annual award to eligible recipients is $4000 for undergraduates and $6000 for graduate students.

Augsburg is one of four higher education institutions in the state, and the only private college, receiving funding from the State legislature to train AI teachers. The Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Partnership is a grant and loan program. Augsburg partners with Minneapolis and St. Paul Public Schools. Our Education majors do their student teaching in one of those districts and if they meet hiring requirements are hired by the district on graduation. This year we have eight students in the program.

Subject: International Education Week is coming up

Submitter:
Andrea Wojtanowicz, Short Term Program Coordinator, International Programs

Several departments and offices on campus will be celebrating and promoting international education and exchange that week with many events, including Chapel talks on international issues, cultural displays in Christensen by the International Student Organization (ISO), tabling in Christensen by Augsburg Abroad to promote study abroad opportunities, international movies on campus, an international section in the Echo, and an open house in Murphy Place. Watch for more information on these and other events in the coming days.

International Education Week (IEW) is a nationwide joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Subject: Take Your Turkey to Work Day!

Submitter:
Rachel Vallens, Campus Kitchen Coordinator, Center for Service Work and Learning

Message: The Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College is proud to announce the 4th annual Turkeypalooza! This Thanksgiving season, the Campus Kitchen will be preparing over 600 complete holiday meals for groups and elderly individuals in the community. It’s a big undertaking, and we need your help.

THURSDAY, NOV 9 is TAKE YOUR TURKEY TO WORK DAY! The Campus Kitchen needs 35 turkeys for our meals this Thanksgiving. We are asking all faculty and staff members to bring a turkey to work. You can bring your turkey to the Campus Kitchen, located on the third floor of the Christensen Center, right outside the Minneapolis Room. Campus Kitchen leadership team members will be there to collect the turkeys between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. If this time does not work, you can arrange for a volunteer to pick up your turkey at your office on Thursday morning. Volunteers will also accept financial donations to purchase turkeys, or other food donations as well.

If you’d like further information about Turkeypalooza, or you’d like to arrange for a pick-up for Take Your Turkey to Work Day, please contact Rachel Vallens, Campus Kitchen Coordinator, by email at vallens@augsburg.edu or by phone at 612-330-1624.

Subject: Coaching and Feedback.... Another Session Added

Submitter:
Sarah Louden, Recruiter/HR Associate, Human Resources

Message: Sometimes, as supervisors, we tend to think of performance management as something we do when an employee is not performing well. While feedback is important then, it’s also important when things are going well. Giving feedback reinforces behavior that we want to see continued and helps the employee know how they are doing relative to the expectations we create. Receiving on-going feedback is how employees come to understand how they contribute to the organization and how they can continuously increase the value of that contribution.

So, how are YOU at giving feedback?

Come to the Coaching and Feedback for Supervisors workshop!
Wednesday, November 8 -- 1 - 3 p.m. (Century Room)
Wednesday, November 15 -- 1 - 3 p.m. (Room TBD)

Please RSVP by calling x1058.

This workshop will build on the introduction to feedback that we touched on in the August performance appraisal sessions. We will revisit the definition of behavior and sharpen our awareness of its importance when giving feedback.

Please bring:

* Performance Appraisals by Cathy Lee Gibson – the book you got in August

* Performance Appraisal and Planning form (blank)

* A situation you would like to practice, if you have one. Otherwise, we have several scenarios that everyone can use.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Subject: Election Day: Tuesday, November 7

Submitter:
Sarah Louden, Recruiter/HR Associate, Human Resources

You are encouraged to exercise your right to vote! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact a member of the Human Resources Department at x1058.

Have a good day!

Subject: Did you know?

Submitter:
Sally Daniels, Director of Parent and Family Relations, Alumni-Parent Relations

Message: Did you know that giving $5 per month from your paycheck will provide an at-risk youth with a caring adult mentor? Or $8 per month (what you might spend at Arby's for lunch!) will pay for a family of five to have a hot meal a day for a month?

Thank you for considering a gift to the United Way. If you need a form, let me know. Please return the forms to me, campus box #146. Remember to bring food for the Brian Coyle Center; every single bit helps!

Subject: Spring Day Registration Issues

Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: Day students, we are just a little over one week away from the start of Spring Day registration. A Faculty Advising Hold has been placed on your file. You must visit with your faculty advisor prior to registration. (Your faculty advisor is listed on the Transcript page in AugNet Records and Registration.) Your faculty advisor will electronically clear your hold after your visit. Numerous other holds are also in place that will prevent registration. Please log onto AugNet Records and Registration and review the Welcome Page. All registration holds will be displayed in red and must be cleared before you register online or at the Enrollment Center. Some of the common holds include:

Accounts Receivable Hold – there is an unpaid balance on your student account

Payment Policy Disclosure Form Hold – a form required of all students regardless of method of payment. This form can be downloaded from the following link:
http://www.augsburg.edu/enroll/account/paypolicy.html. Note: if you are still listed as a dependent on your parents tax forms, they will need to sign the Disclosure Form as cosigner.

Immunization Form Hold – either we have not received an immunization form or the shots are incomplete or out of date. This form is required by state law and can be downloaded from the Registrar web page at: http://www.augsburg.edu/enroll/registrar/index.html

Please check the status of your account in sufficient time to clear your holds prior to the opening of your registration period.

Subject: Standing meeting times for Senate, CTP, GAAC, AAC

Submitter:
Anthony A Bibus III, Professor, Social Work

Message: In order to manage the difficulty that some standing committees have had in coordinating members' schedules for meetings, Faculty Senate has decided to adopt a policy that the following standing committees will have standing meeting days and times. As faculty members plan for teaching assignments next year and if we plan to run for senate election or volunteer for appointment to the senate or these committees, we should free up our teaching schedule or other appointments to accommodate these days and times:

Senate: Wednesdays, 3:40-5:10 p.m. (with possible fallback to 4:40-6:10 p.m.)

Committee on Tenure and Promotion: Thursdays, 3:10-6 p.m. (and sometimes later)

Graduate Academic Affairs Committee: monthly Wednesdays, 8:30-10 a.m.

Academic Affairs Committee: Mondays, 3:30-5 p.m.

Subject: Life of the Mind Retreat

Submitter:
Douglas E Green, Professor, English

Message: We now know that the dates are the Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon leading into Spring Break, 16-17 March. The retreat is at the luxe conference center in nearby Chaska. We can accommodate 20-30 faculty and staff.

Cormac McCarthy's short, well-reviewed apocalyptic novel "The Road" is one possible centerpiece of the retreat, around which to bring together colleagues with interests in sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, and professional studies. Let me know what you think, what other ideas and interests you have, and if you'd like to help (if you've already expressed an interest in helping and can stay on board, you don't need volunteer again). I'd also love to know whether you plan to attend, now that we know the dates.

Above all, please encourage your colleagues to attend. Whether you're a newcomer or an old-timer like me, the retreat is a great way to meet colleagues across campus and to reconnect with old friends. The food and company and talk will be great.

Subject: Paid Time off for Community Service

Submitter:
Cynthia J Greenwood, Director, Human Resources, Human Resources

Message: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” -- Anne Frank

President Pribbenow announced earlier this week in his online update and at community time that Augsburg will provide two days off with pay annually for staff who would like to engage in civic or community service. We are so pleased to be able to offer this benefit!

Mary Laurel True of the Center for Service, Work, and Learning, has offered to help staff find opportunities for community service. If you don’t already have an opportunity in mind, call Mary for some ideas. She can be reached at x1775 or truem@augsburg.edu.

On your absence reports and timesheets, please code this absence as “C”, Community Service. The forms on Human Resources’ public drive on Augnet have been updated with this code.

The following is the text of the policy:

5.22 Paid Time for Community Service
Regular full-time and regular part-time staff are eligible for two days leave with pay each calendar year to volunteer with their chosen community or religious organization. Examples of community service projects might include working with Habitat for Humanity, working at a homeless shelter, or serving on the board of a community group.

Time off for community service can be used in half-day increments and must be approved in advance by the employee’s supervisor.

Subject: Faculty/Staff - Fitness/Wellness

Submitter:
Joyce Pfaff, Associate Professor, Health-Physical Education

The first session will be this Thursday (Nov 9) from noon - 1 p.m. in Melby Hall, room 119 (lower level). The second session will be Friday, Nov 17 from noon - 1 p.m. in Melby Hall, room 202 (main level). Come join us for one or both dates. There is no physical participation involved.

Subject: Free Change!

Submitter:
Natalie Wright, Administrative Assistant, Government and Community Relations, Institutional Advancement

Message: Would you like some free change? No, I am not talking about nickels and dimes, but about voting on Election Day! Election Day is tomorrow, Tuesday November 7, participate in free change! Go out and vote!

Recipe for change:
Youth voters + youth voters + youth voters= Discussion and action on youth voter issues

Augsburg’s polling place is at Seward Towers East (2910 Franklin Ave E) which are the large, tall apartment buildings across 94. The polling location will have lists of all students currently living in the dorms so that students living on campus only have to bring a current Augsburg ID.
