Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

St. Francis of Assisi in the Thirteenth Century: A Life in Art and Text
Friday, Nov. 10, 3:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room. Refreshments served.

Francis is one of the best known saints in Christian history, but he is often reduced to a garden ornament. This presentation will give a fuller picture of the life and vocational struggles of the Patron Saint of Ecology and founder of the Franciscan Orders. Getting to the "historical Francis" is a similar problem to that of the "historical Jesus," and Francis is often understood to be that disciple of Jesus who most closely followed Jesus' footsteps. Francis lived a carefree life both before and after the dramatic changes in his life. His example is a challenge to our day in ecology, interfaith relations, and personal spirituality.

Dr. Brad Holt, Professor of Religion, participated in a National Endowment of the Humanities Seminar in the summer of 2006, devoted to an interdisciplinary study of Francis. The group of 15 professors stayed in Rome for one week, Siena three weeks, and Assisi for two, each pursuing different projects with regard to Francis, and discussing the earliest texts and paintings.

Subject: 40 Faculty Interviewers Needed for Scholarship Day

Barbara Edwards Farley, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, Academic Affairs

Message: Dear Faculty,

Approximately 40 faculty members are needed to interview student candidates for Scholarship Day, the annual event which brings together highly qualified candidates for Augsburg’s most prestigious scholarships: President’s and Fine Arts Scholarships. I am pleased to announce that plans for this year’s event, scheduled for March 2-3, 2007, benefited greatly from the work of Honors Program Director Robert Groven, members of the Honors Council, and the Admissions Department. However, we need your participation in order to continue this event’s success.

Besides providing a unique opportunity to engage with this group of talented student applicants, over the years faculty interview teams have proven to be a crucial component of this event’s success. This year's scholarship competition takes on a family orientation and includes an overnight stay for students on Friday, March 2. Saturday’s format will include academic competitions in writing, performances, and a 30-minute interview. President Pribbenow (the first to volunteer to be an interviewer!) will host a lunch for applicants and their families, which will conclude this event.

I hope you will consider participating in Scholarship Day. Contact Marissa Machado, machado@augsburg.edu with any questions. Please send an email to scholars@augsburg.edu to reserve a place on an interview team.

Subject: Celebrating Scholarship
Submitter:
Douglas E Green, Professor, English

Message: The Scholarly Writing Group supports faculty and staff in their scholarly and professional work on presentations, articles, and books. One of our aims is to publicize the high level of accomplishment that Augsburg faculty and staff achieve in this area, often below the campus radar screen.

In that vein, Professor Colin Irvine of the Augsburg English Department has recently published two articles: "Remembering How to Do What You Haven't Yet Done: Using Personal His-Stories and Her-Stories in English Education Courses," in The Journal of the Midwest Modern Language Association, 39.1 (Spring 2006), and "Wallace Stegner's Novelization of the American West and Western," Journal of the West, 45. 3 (Summer 2006).

The Scholarly Writing Group wants the community to know about accomplishments like Professor Irvine's. If you're too shy to toot your own scholarly horn, let us do it for you. Send information about about your publications to Doug Green (green@augsburg.edu) or Dal Liddle (liddle@augsburg.edu).

And consider joining SWG, which meets over lunch on Mondays between 1:30 and 12:30 in Lindell Library 1 (CTL); if you're teaching, come for the part of the meeting you can make--and let us know, so that we can treat you to a boxed lunch, courtesy of CTL. We circulate and discuss work in progress by one of our members at each meeting; disciplines represented range from English and History to Biology and Social Work. Our next gathering is Monday, 20 November. Dal Liddle is presenting. Please join us.
