Subject: NEH Seminar Presentation by Dr. Brad Holt

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:
St. Francis of Assisi in the Thirteenth Century: A Life in Art and Text
Friday, Nov. 10, 3:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room. Refreshments served.

Francis is one of the best known saints in Christian history, but he is often reduced to a garden ornament. This presentation will give a fuller picture of the life and vocational struggles of the Patron Saint of Ecology and founder of the Franciscan Orders. Getting to the "historical Francis" is a similar problem to that of the "historical Jesus," and Francis is often understood to be that disciple of Jesus who most closely followed Jesus' footsteps. Francis lived a carefree life both before and after the dramatic changes in his life. His example is a challenge to our day in ecology, interfaith relations, and personal spirituality.

Dr. Brad Holt, Professor of Religion, participated in a National Endowment of the Humanities Seminar in the summer of 2006, devoted to an interdisciplinary study of Francis. The group of 15 professors stayed in Rome for one week, Siena three weeks, and Assisi for two, each pursuing different projects with regard to Francis, and discussing the earliest texts and paintings.

Subject: Johnson, Nagurski named to elite preseason squad
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Aaron Johnson, Critter Nagurski named to USCHO Preseason Division II/III All-USCHO Team
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/103106hockey.html

MINNEAPOLIS (10/31/06) -- Augsburg College men's hockey forwards Aaron Johnson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Critter Nagurski (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) were named to the Preseason Division II/III All-USCHO Team by the staff of U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com), a national website that covers college hockey.

Both Johnson and Nagurski were named to the West region first team by USCHO. The 37-member squad is made up of first and second teams of six players each from both the East and West regions, along with 13 honorable-mention selections.

Augsburg is one of only five schools nationally to have two players or more on the first or second teams, joining defending NCAA Division III national champion Middlebury (Vt.), defending national runner-up St. Norbert (Wis.), Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Norwich (Vt.).

Johnson earned a spot on the AHCA/RBK Hockey Division III All-American first team in 2005-06, and is a two-time All-MIAC honoree. Last season, Johnson led the nation in both points per game (1.96) and assists per game (1.44), as he collected 13 goals and 36 assists for 49 points. He led the MIAC in both overall games and conference games-only (32 points) scoring, as well as assists in both categories (23 in league play).

In two seasons of hockey at Augsburg (50 games) after playing his freshman season at Division I Michigan Tech, he has compiled 23 goals and 61 assists for 84 points. He had at least one goal or assist in 23 of Augsburg's 25 games last season, with multiple-point games 14 times.

It's Nagurski's second time on the preseason All-USCHO team; he was an honorable-mention selection last season. Nagurski has earned All-MIAC honors three times, being named to the first team the last two years and as an honorable-mention selection his freshman year. Nagurski led the MIAC in goals scored in both overall (21) and conference games only (15), finishing with 34 points (21 goals, 13 assists). His goals-per-game average of 0.84 was fifth-best among Division III players last season.

In three seasons of hockey at Augsburg (72 games), Nagurski has compiled 43 goals and 35 assists for 78 points. He scored at least one goal or assist in 19 of Augsburg's 25 games last season, and had multiple-point efforts 10 times.

Augsburg finished 9-13-3 overall and 5-8-3 in MIAC play in 2005-06. Under new interim head coach Chris Brown, Augsburg will open its 2006-07 season this weekend with a nonconference road trip, playing at St. Norbert (Wis.) on Friday (11/3) at 7:05 p.m. and at Lake Forest (Ill.) on Saturday (11/4) at 7:30 p.m. Augsburg's home opener is on Friday, Nov. 10, hosting Wisconsin-River Falls at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Message: My magic phone rang again. Actually, it was more of a magic email, but the result was the same.

I have 30 tickets for The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee at the State Theatre on Tuesday, November 7 at 7:30. This is not a real spelling bee, but a musical. I will distribute these tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Email me at murray@augsburg.edu.

In the Tony Award®-winning new musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grownups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. Spelling Bee has been hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “perfect in every possible way – that rarity of rarities, a super-smart musical that is also a bona fide crowd pleaser.” The New York Times calls Spelling Bee, “irresistible, riotously funny and remarkably ingenious – gold stars all around.”
