Subject: Confidential Document Destruction

Message: The facilities department has scheduled a document destruction company to come to campus on Thursday, November 2 to shred confidential documents. If you have need of this service, please gather, box and mark the boxes that you want shredded. Facilities will arrange for the documents to be picked up at your office/storage location on or before the date that the shredding company will be on campus. Subject: Seminary & Divinity School Day

Message: On Thursday, November 2, we will explore the possibilities at Gustavus Adolphus College. Over 15 seminaries and divinity schools from around the United States will gather at Gustavus to hold the Seminary & Divinity School Day. The day will include informal and informational visits with representatives from seminaries and divinity schools. There day will also host a chapel service (with Bishop Jon Anderson of the Southwestern MN Synod of the ELCA), a panel discussion about seminaries today, and lunch (with Dr. Rolf Jacobson of Luther Seminary). There will also be workshops on the decision-making process, like finances, candidacy, choosing a program, etc.

There is no fee for the day. There’s not even a fee for lunch, if you register with Ross Murray by October 26. Ross will be providing transportation from Augsburg. We will leave at 8:15 a.m. and return at 5 p.m. To register, contact Ross Murray at 612-330-1151 or murray@augsburg.edu.

The Business Department Keystone classes invite everyone to a presentation by Beth Lewis, President and CEO of Augsburg Fortress Publishers, on her own life and vocation in business and publishing.

A lifelong Lutheran, Beth spent 22 years working in progressively more responsible roles for three Fortune 500 publishing companies. In 1998, Beth acquired a privately owned computer training school, Computer Coach, Inc. in Boca Raton. She turned around this business and was recognized with several awards including the SBA’s Women in Business Advocate of the Year Award for South Florida in 2001.

In August 2002, Beth was called to her current role as President & CEO of Augsburg Fortress. In this role, she has led the staff in a turnaround effort that has included such notable successes as the publication of the Lutheran Voices series of books, AKALOO intergenerational, web-based faith formation resources, and many other print and electronic resources for use by Lutherans and other Christians.

Message: This week's "Abundance Lunches" on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are free, celebrating Augsburg's abundance.

In keeping with the college’s abiding commitment to community and acting from this attitude of abundance, you are invited to bring canned or packaged goods or a financial donation for the Brian Coyle Community Center. Bins are located by the Information Desk. Students choosing to swipe their lunch card will be donating the normal cost of lunch to the Center.

Subject: Alumnae receive Metro Lutheran's Gold Pen Award

Message: Alumnae Janet Letnes Martin and Suzan (Johnson) Nelson, Class of 1968, were awarded the 2006 Gold Pen Award by "Metro Lutheran" at their annual dinner last night at Mount Olivet Church, Minneapolis.

The award recognizes distinguished service to Christ and the church through significant contribution in public communication, that stimulates greater understanding between secular and religious communication, and fosters inter-Lutheran communication.

Message: Professor David Apolloni (Philosophy Department) published his research on jazz bandleader
and bassist Thelma Terry in the June and July issues of The Mississippi Rag. Thelma Terry was one of the first women to lead a jazz band consisting of male players ("Thelma Terry and her Playboys"), which included Gene Krupa (this was his first band), Bud Jacobson, and other greats. She disappeared in 1929, and little was known about her until Prof. Apolloni found her family in 2000, thereby solving a seventy-year-old mystery.

TRYOUTS: The team will be holding an Open Practice/Tryout on Monday, October 30 from 7:30-10 p.m. in Si Melby Gym. Tryouts will include learning new material (a dance and a cheer) and each person will be evaluated on his/her ability to learn and perform.
