We need you to “water” the good will and intentions of our donors of scholarships by saying thank you in a personal way. It is the right thing to do!

Stop by Christiansen Center on Tuesday or Wednesday October 24th-25th to write a thank you note to the generous donors who make an Augsburg education possible.

I look forward to seeing you all next week!

Timothy Dougherty, Community and Civic Engagement Student Coordinator, Center for Service Work and Learning

Message: As part of President Pribbenow's inaugural celebration, we will be engaging in service projects for the neighborhood on Saturday morning from 9-12 noon. There are two options for your time and talents:

1. The East African Women's Center - A project of the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota, this center provides East African women with culturally sensitive programming to support them as they integrate into American culture while retaining their sense of identity and belief. Ten interested volunteers will be painting, varnishing, and helping to spruce up this excellent community partner's facility in the Riverside Plaza.

2. Mississippi River Clean-Up - Most of us are unaware that Augsburg College is the steward for the stretch of river from Bohemian Flats to the I-94 bridge on the West Bank. Join us to clear litter and debris as we hear a bit of the river's history from Professor Joe Underhill-Cady. Be sure to bundle up as we take care of one of our neighborhood's most treasured resources.

We'll meet at 9 a.m. in the Christensen Center lobby for a continental breakfast to fuel our efforts.

If interested in serving with us, please send an email to Mary Laurel True at truem@augsburg.edu or Tim Dougherty at doughert@augsburg.edu by 2 p.m. on Friday. Call X1208 or X1775 with questions.

Subject: The Habbestad Ensemble Concert, Oct, 18 at 7 p.m.

Submitter:
Merilee I Klemp, Associate Professor, Music

Message: The Habbestad Ensemble from Norway will be presenting the US premiere of Kjell Habbestad's "Terje Vigen" on Wednesday evening at 7 PM in Sateren auditorium. Kjell Habbestad is a composer and a member of the faculty at the Norwegian Academy of Music. His opus list includes over 80 compositions including works for orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles as well as three operas, one oratorio, and a large quantity of church music. This event "kicks-off" our own campus events commemorating the centennial of the death of Henrik ibsen.
"Terje Vigen" (pronounced tehryeh veegen) is the finest product of the poetic genius of Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), who is best known as the greatest playwright of the nineteenth century. Ibsen's dramatic poem about love and hate, bitterness and forgiveness, has fired the imagination of Norwegian readers for over a century. Indeed, many Norwegian children learn it by heart - all 43 stanzas!- during their school days. William H. Halverson ('51), who specializes in the translation of books and other materials dealing with Norwegian music, has prepared a new translation of this epic poem. He will present a brief introduction to the concert tomorrow evening.

Augsburg's central location and readily available, generously discounted bus passes make public transit a real possibility for many faculty, students and staff. In addition, the local neighborhoods provide decent and affordable housing that make commuting by bicycle or walking very convenient. Many express bus lines, combined with light rail, also make public transit easier and faster than ever. Join the growing number of faculty, students and staff who are contributing to a better environment, reducing traffic congestion and reducing demand for parking through their use of alternative commuting options.
