Subject: assessment of student learning update

Submitter:
Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Associate Professor, Chair, Psychology

Message: The results of the faculty/staff assessment of student learning survey are available at:

http://www.augsburg.edu/assessment/reports/survey_results/

The file is 05_survey_report_facstaff.pdf

The results of the survey suggest that we seem to have consolidated awareness and understanding of assessment of student learning. It also suggests that resistance to assessment may no longer be our greatest obstacle; availability of information/resources as well as communication from the assessment committee seem to be the current problem. Respondentsâ perceptions and involvement in assessment remain at the individual and department level rather than at the college level.

The assessment committee would like to thank all members of the Augsburg community who have been actively involved in assessment. Eighty-four percent (38/45) of the departments and programs in the Academic and Student Affairs Division have developed plans for assessment of student learning. Forty-five percent (17/38) of departments and programs with an assessment plan are currently using data to make decisions. Eighteen percent (7/38) are still in the process of collecting data and thirty-seven percent (14/38) have not yet begun to collect data. Sixty-eight percent (26/38) of departments and programs with plans submitted an annual assessment report.

Subject: Gormley to be hired as Augsburg softball coach
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg to hire Tim Gormley as softball coach, will begin coaching in 2007 season

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/031506gormley.html

MINNEAPOLIS (3/15/06) -- Tim Gormley, a softball assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas, will be named the new head coach at Augsburg College and will begin his coaching duties in the 2007 season, women's athletic director Marilyn Florian announced on Wednesday.

Gormley will replace Carol Enke, who will resign at the end of the 2006 season after serving for 21 years as Augsburg's head coach. Gormley will formally begin his duties at Augsburg in June, Florian said.

"We are pleased to announce the hiring of Tim Gormley as our new head softball coach, beginning with the 2007 season," Florian said. "He was chosen from a strong pool of worthy candidates. He is a proven leader of successful high school and college softball programs and he is a great addition to our coaching staff."

Gormley has served as an assistant coach under John Tschida for eight seasons -- three seasons (1996-98) at St. Mary's University and five seasons (2000-05) at the University of St. Thomas. The Tommies won NCAA Division III national titles in the 2004 and 2005 seasons with Gormley as part of the coaching staff, while winning four of the last five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles. He was also a part of MIAC title teams at St. Mary's in 1997 and 1998. Gormley has been a part of six NCAA Division III national tournament teams in his eight years of collegiate coaching. His college teams have produced a 295-55 overall record, 162-14 in MIAC play.

Tschida's Tommie staff was named Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in both 2004 and 2005. The Tommies went 46-4 in 2004, winning their final 41 games in a row, and went 43-6 with wins in 32 of their final 33 games in 2005. The Tommies became just the second Division III softball team to ever repeat as national champions (Eastern Connecticut State was the first in 1985 and 1986). The Tommies have compiled a 111-7 record against MIAC opponents during the past five seasons (including MIAC playoffs), going 49-1 the last two years.

"I am excited for the challenge that is ahead of me," Gormley said. "I have had the great fortune to work with a coach who is, in my opinion, one of the best. John has taught me so much about the game of softball. He is also a very good friend. I will truly miss working with him."

Gormley also spent two seasons (1999-2000) as head coach at Mounds View (Minn.) High School. He has served as head coach of the Northern Lights 18-under fastpitch softball team for the past two seasons, and has served as a clinician and umpire for the past decade. He also served as an ice hockey official at the high school and collegiate levels during the past decade.

Gormley currently serves as physical education teacher and athletic director at St. Jude of the Lake School in Mahtomedi, Minn., a K-8 school. He previously taught at St. Agnes grade and junior high schools in St. Paul. He received his bachelor's degree from St. Mary's University in 1987 and his master's degree from St. Mary's in 1998.

"As I look to the future, I am thrilled to begin a new chapter in my coaching career," Gormley said. "I look forward to working with the young ladies here at Augsburg. I have had the opportunity to work with a couple of them in the past, so I know them and they know me. I think anyone who plays for me will find that I am very passionate about the game. I enjoy watching players improve while focusing on the fundamentals. Hard work and a willingness to put in extra time at improving their talents have always been a part of my teams. I am confident you will see that here at Augsburg. I am honored to be replacing a very good coach. I look forward to continuing the great tradition of quality softball that Carol Enke has maintained the past 21 years."

Enke, in her 21st season as Augsburg's head coach in 2006, currently has a career record of 290-404-3, including a 195-222 record in MIAC play. She is among the top 50 active coaches in NCAA Division III softball (third among MIAC coaches) in career victories.

One of only two head coaches in program history, Enke was named Augsburg's head coach in 1986, replacing Mary Timm, who coached the Auggies from the program's varsity inception in 1975 to 1985. Enke was selected NCAA Division III West Region Coach of the Year in 1991, the first of three 20-win finishes in a five-year span. Enke's Auggie teams have had double-digit win campaigns in 16 of her 20 seasons. She also serves as an instructor in the health and physical education department.

"Thank you to Carol for her outstanding leadership of the softball program from 1986 through 2006," Florian said.
