Message: Augsburg finishes second in wrestling academic national standings; 6 Auggies named NWCA Scholar All-Americans

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/030706scholarwrestling.html

MINNEAPOLIS (3/7/06) -- For the ninth year in a row, Augsburg College finished in the top 10 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Scholar All-America team program, finishing second among more than 100 NCAA Division III wrestling institutions with a 3.42 team grade-point-average.

Augsburg is the only school in NCAA Division III wrestling to finish in the top 10 both in competition on the mat and in the academic team competition in each of the nine years that the NWCA has awarded an academic team national championship.

Augsburg placed third at the NCAA Division III national championships, held over the weekend at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J.

Four of the six Auggies who earned indivdual Scholar All-American honors also competed at the Division III national championships.

Ryan Valek (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West), a three-time All-American and two-time national runner-up at 165 pounds, earned Scholar All-American honors for the third straight year. Two-time All-American Jared Evans (Jr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS), who finished fourth at 149 pounds this season, earned Scholar All-American honors for the second straight year.

National tournament qualifiers Josh Hansen (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) and Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) were also named Scholar-Americans. Hansen, a 141-pounder, repeated his Scholar All-American honors, while Neumann earned the honor for the first time in his career.

Also named Scholar All-Americans were Auggie seniors Kirk Rall (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Greg Brendemuehl (Sr., Medford, Minn.). Rall earned the academic honor for the third straight year, while Brendemuehl earned the honor for the first time in his career.

Over the past 23 seasons, Augsburg has produced 95 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, the most of any college in any division in the nation. Augsburg has had at least three Scholar All-Americans every year since 1993, and has had 72 athletes honored since 1997.

In order to qualify for individual Scholar All-America honors, student-athletes must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA or previous-year GPA, be enrolled at the institution for at least one full year, and have specific athletic credentials.

Messiah College (Pa.) was the top team academically, with a team GPA of 3.47. The Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) was third with a 3.40 team GPA. In all, 15 schools had team GPAs of 3.2 or higher.
