Subject: Lilly Sponsored Faculty/Staff Spring Retreat

Message: The theme for this spring's Lilly retreat is "finding our way home again." We will use spring themes to examine how we can connect who we are with what we do. Selected readings, poems, video, music and nature will serve as catalysts helping us to slow down, to hear ourselves, and to have significant conversations with each other. All activities are invitational and personal time is scheduled into the retreat.

The retreat will be held at the Mount Olivet Retreat Center located twenty-five minutes south of the Twin Cities. The opening session will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday May 10th. and we will depart after Lunch on May 11th. You are encouraged to stay overnight. May is a wonderful time to reflect on the past year and to plant seeds for the future.

Message: Spanish Lunches have expanded to include Spanish Suppers. Spanish Lunches and Spanish Suppers are an opportunity to eat a meal with a knowledgeable Spanish tutor. Spanish Lunch and Spanish Supper facilitators will be sitting in the Coffee Shop of Christensen Center with a sign identifying themselves. Bring your own meal, sit down, and ask questions about your Spanish class! If you don't have questions, the facilitator will ask you questions.

Spanish Lunches are being offered WEC Saturdays, WEC Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays from 12 - 1 . Spanish Suppers are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5 - 6. Meals are informal, but can be helpful for any Spanish beginners.

Message: How do bacteria take up DNA and become antibiotic resistant?

Our invited speaker Dr. Don Morrison of University of Illinois at Chicago will speak on his research of the genetic regulation of competence, the uptake of DNA as well as recruit students for graduate programs in molecular biology.

"Genetic transformation in Streptococcus pneumoniae: identification of competence genes by use of DNA microarrays"

Following this presentation, Dr. Morrison will show a few slides about the graduate programs in Molecular Biology and Cell and Develo p.m.ental Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His department is very interested in recruiting students from the Twin Cities/Midwest for their graduate programs and he would love to have students and faculty attend.

Message: Dr. Richard Bliese, president of Luther Seminary, will give a Peace with Justice Forum Sunday, March 19 at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. All are invited at no charge to hear his topic, "The Church's Ministry of Reconciliation."

Lunch is available ($7.00), and validated parking is available in the Central parking lot/ramp on the south side of the church.

Dr. Bliese will discuss the Church's ministry of reconciliation, offering perspectives on reconciliation as informed by his ministry experiences in Africa, Europe, and the United States

The Deans' Award for Student Leadership was established by the Academic and Student Affairs Division to recognize student leaders at Augsburg College. The award helps advance the college's mission "To nurture future leaders in service to the world."

The Deans' Award for Student Leadership is given annually to Augsburg undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership qualities. This is the third year of this award.

The selection criteria includes:

ð Demonstrated leadership skills: effective communication, planning, creativity, fairness, nurturing of others.
ð Demonstrated involvement in student government, campus activities and/or student life.
ð Demonstrated commitment to building positive relationships with peer groups, faculty, and staff.

The campus community is invited to submit nominations. Self-nominations are also encouraged; please attach a letter of recommendation with the self-nomination.

The deadline for accepting nominations is Friday, March 17, 2006. Please return nomination forms to the Academic and Student Affairs Office, Memorial Hall, Room 118, CB 72.

Message: Nominations are invited for the Linda Schrempp Alberg Award.

The Linda Schrempp Alberg Award was established by the family, colleagues, alumni and friends of Linda Schrempp Alberg in recognition of her outstanding commitment and exemplary leadership in the field of student affairs during her lifetime. Linda served Augsburg College for 19 years, initially as Director of Residence Life and finally, as Associate Dean of Student Affairs. She died on June 13, 1996 at the age of 44.

The Leadership Award is given annually to an Augsburg undergraduate student who reflects the qualities of leadership and commitment to enhancing college life which distinguished the professional life of Linda Schrempp Alberg. The amount of the award is approx. $500.00.

Nominations are accepted from the campus community. Self-nominations are also encouraged; please attach a letter of recommendation with the self-nomination.

Message: If you are planning to work at a summer camp this summer, make sure you apply for a Lilly Camp Stipend. We have several stipends, worth $500 each, to give to students who are going to dedicate their summer working in camping ministry. Students working at ANY summer camp are encouraged to apply.

To apply, simply fill out an application found in the Campus Ministry Office. Also, sign up for an interview slot on Ross Murrayâs door. Interviews will be conducted the week after Spring Break.
