The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders from the entire spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation also seeks American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal public policy or Native American health care.

Humanity in Action Fellowship

The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.

After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.

Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.
Applications are due on January 9, 2014.

Fun Course: Medieval Connections, HUM 120

Looking for a fun course to fulfill your Humanities LAF. Check out HUM 120, Medieval Life in 12th-Century Europe (a.k.a. Medieval Connections).

This intro course for medieval studies uses an interdisciplinary approach to study European culture during a period known as the High Middle Ages, roughly AD 1100 to 1300. It attempts to examine medieval culture as a complex system of thought and feeling, which includes history, religion, philosophy, literature, art, theatre, music, and food. It also takes an experiential approach to this material, for example, by having students and faculty attend class in academic regalia, just as they did in medieval universities.

Pre-Health Internship Opportunity

Internships available for undergraduate students interested in Pre-Health sciences. Students can study abroad, shadow doctors, learn a second language, and give back to the community on the beautiful islands of Canary and Azores. Students can choose to attend up to two of the following summer sessions:

$30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree

Attention Juniors!

Are you interested in a career in public service?
Do you plan to attend graduate or professional school?
Could you use $30,000 to fund your education?

If so, you may be eligible for the Truman Scholarship, a merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation seeks candidates who have extensive records of public and community service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.

Additional eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and junior standing (or senior standing, but in the third year of college enrollment).

Vann Fellowship Due Tuesday 11/12

Attention Students! If you are interested in the Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics at Mayo Clinic, Augsburg's internal applications are due Tuesday, Nov. 12.

This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants.

Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care

If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

Dining Services Customer Satisfaction Survey

I recently sent an email to every student, staff, and faculty member inviting you to participate in a dining services customer satisfaction survey. We are eager to get your feedback! Please go to your Augsburg email - it contains your individual participant code - and click on the link to participate. Students who participate will be in a drawing for one of two great prizes provided by A'Viands - two Google Chromecasts! ALL RESPONSES ARE CONFIDENTIAL. This login code is only used to let us know which students participated so that the prize drawings my be held. Your survey responses will go directly to an independent third party research firm and your identity will not be associated with your responses.

Annual Benefit Enrollment Period Now Open

The annual benefit enrollment period will remain open until November 20. This year our enrollment process will be online.

All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment form, even if you plan to maintain the same benefit coverage elections from 2013. Additionally due to enrollment forms being submitted online, no paper forms will be accepted.

Please be advised that open enrollment will close on November 20 at 4:00 p.m. No late submissions will be accepted.

During the information sessions, representatives from HealthPartners, Interactive Wellness, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2014.

Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections.

Turkeypalooza with Campus Kitchen

Every Thanksgiving, Campus Kitchen celebrates the holiday with an initiative called Turkeypalooza where we serve hundreds of turkey meals to our neighbors, and gather the ingredients to do this from our friends on campus and beyond. This happens to coincide with Give to the Max Day on November 14th - a statewide day of giving where people donate to their favorite non-profits online. Many choose to donate money online rather than donate food for the Thanksgiving meals. A little bit more:

Finnegans Beer and Community Foundation chose us as one of their Three Small Pints, small organizations working against hunger in creative ways. They will match what we raise up to $1,500 and the group with the most donors will receive a bonus $500. We won the bonus last year, and can you help us do the same again this year? Donating for Thanksgiving meals

If you prefer to donate food items, here's what we need: green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and french onions for casserole; stuffing mix; canned pumpkin mix or real ones; and potato flakes or real spuds. We are not collecting whole turkeys this year as it's quite tricky to move, store, and cook that much raw meat. If you want to do a turkey, please select the $15 option on the Give to the Max page. Also, if we work with non-perishable items, anything we collect will go to the Campus Cupboard - the food shelf for students. In fact, feel free to bring in any additional food items as we can use this event as an opportunity to the fill the shelves! We'll be collecting food in the Christensen Center Lobby on Thursday 11/14 and Wednesday 11/20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

5:30-7:30 p.m. Serve a Thanksgiving meal to homeless adults

Friday, Nov. 29- Post-Thanksgiving Meal at Ebenezer

Upcoming Holidays and Floating Holiday

The following days are paid holidays for benefit-eligible staff. College offices will be CLOSED to the public on these days. Temporary/stipend employees and student workers are not eligible for paid holidays.

As was announced earlier this spring, the College no longer offers "gift" days or "President holidays." Instead, the College added two paid holidays this year. This increased the total number of designated and floating holidays to 12 annually. One of the holidays was utilized on July 5; the other holiday for 2013 is a floating holiday for use during December. This floating holiday will be added to the employees' floating holiday balances for eligible staff members to use prior to the end of the calendar year. Employees need to request the time off with their supervisor using the normal request process. Time granted off for floating holidays is to be used in full-day increments. Floating holidays that are not utilized by the end of the calendar year will be lost.

StarDreamers--The Spirit Water People is a 3-part documentary created by filmmaker Sheldon P. Wolfchild. Come join the preview showing of Part 2, "The Doctrine of Discovery," that focuses on a little-known subject traced back to Christopher Columbus's so-called "discovery" of the lands now commonly known as "the Americas." This doctrine remains the Supreme Law of the Land in the U.S. Come learn the role of this ancient doctrine in our laws, our language, the U.S. governmental system, and its negative effects on Indigenous Peoples today.

This film will be followed by a discussion with 38plus2 director, Sheldon Wolfchild; Birgil Kills- Straight, Lakota elder; and Steven Newcomb, Shawnee-Lenape author and scholar, and the principal person featured in the documentary.

Heritage Day - Sunday, November 17

The Augsburg College Heritage Day (also known as "Founders Day") is a joint venture of the Christensen Center for Vocation, the Religion Department, and the Office of the President.

This year's Heritage Day lecture will feature Dr. Vitor Westhelle, professor of Systematic Theology at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and the chair of Luther Research at FACULDADES-EST, São Leopoldo, Brazil.

The theme for the night is, "What is the Church called to say about Money, Jobs, and Politics?"

Join us in the East Commons on November 17 at 6:30 p.m. for a dessert reception, followed by Dr. Westhelle's presentation and Q&A from 7 - 8 p.m.

For Sale: Ceiling Fan/Lights & Queen Bed Frame

Two identical Hunter brand ceiling fan/lights. 48", 5 blade, black with wood grain fan blades. Three lights with frosted swirl globes. In great shape (just don't need them in my air-conditioned house). $50 each.

Heavy duty queen size bed frame, 6 wheels. Bought for $100, used just 6 months while I transitioned, I am returning to my platform bed frame now that I am settled. $50.
