The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders from the entire spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation also seeks American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal public policy or Native American health care.

2014 Vann Fellowship - Mayo Clinic

2014 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics! This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due November 12, 2013.

Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

Change to Religion Requirement in Core Curriculum

There are now many more courses that fulfill the Christian Vocation and Search for Meaning II Signature Curriculum requirement, which is part of the Core Curriculum. In fact, almost all Religion (REL) and many Youth and Family Ministry (YFM) courses now fulfill that requirement. Please note that a single course cannot be used to fulfill both the Christian Vocation and Search for Meaning II requirement and a Humanities Liberal Arts Foundation requirement. If a student completes a Religion course that could fulfill both of these requirements, it will fulfill the Christian Vocation and Search for Meaning II unless the student has already fulfilled that requirement.

Students can use the Core Curriculum drop down menu in Records and Registration to search for courses that fulfill the Christian Vocation and Search for Meaning II requirements by selecting "Search for Meaning II" as the search filter.

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care

If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

Benefits:
- Lifelong membership in an active and growing network of alumni.
- Meeting other student leaders at the Udall Scholar Orientation
- Up to $5,000 for educational expenses

Staff Development - Workplace Health & Ergonomics

$30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree

Attention Juniors! How would you like $30,000 to help fund your graduate degree?

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive and prestigious federal scholarship granted to U.S. college juniors for demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service. The scholarship is in the amount of $30,000 toward a graduate education. Students must be nominated by their institution and each institution can send four nominations.

Internal Applications are due January 15, 2014

Program Details:
-Interested in being a "change agent," and improving the ways that government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions serve the public.
-Have an interest working in government, education, the nonprofit sector, or the public interest/advocacy sector to improve these conditions.
-Is committed to working in public service after completing a Foundation-funded graduate degree.
-Interested in seeking a master's degree, a doctorate, or a professional degree such as a law degree or a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Master of Education, Master of Public Policy, or Master of International Affairs.

Program Qualifications:
-A U.S. citizen
-A full-time student pursuing a bachelor's degree with junior-level (or senior standing, but in the 3rd year of college enrollment).

Humanity in Action Accepting Applications for 2014

The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.

After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.

Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.
Applications are due on January 9, 2014.

Google Apps Menu Change

Google has made a change to their application menu. The apps menu (Search, Images, Mail, Drive, Calendar etc.) has been replaced with a new apps icon in the top, right hand corner of your Google pages.

For more details please see our IT blog post.

Google will be rolling out new features continually. This is the new world we are working in. The Google platform of products will always be changing. This change first came to gmail.com users (you might have seen this already on your personal gmail) and the education customers like ourselves soon follow. Seeing a change in your gmail.com account is a good heads-up that it will be coming soon to your Augsburg gmail account as well.

Annual Benefit Enrollment Period

We are pleased to announce that we have made significant strides forward in creating a "green" open enrollment process. The annual benefit enrollment period will be from November 6 - November 20. This year our enrollment process will be on-line.

All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment form, even if you plan to maintain the same benefit coverage elections from 2013. Additionally due to enrollment forms being submitted on-line, no paper forms will be accepted. Human resources will also be hosting three sessions for employees that would like assistance with the online enrollment process.

Representatives from HealthPartners, Interactive Wellness, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2014.

Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections.

We will also highlight the many resources available to support you in finding your path at Augsburg. All this, plus time for your questions! Thank You Auggie Blood Donors!

The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion would like to thank all of the faculty, staff and students that donated blood last week. As a result of your donations the whole blood and double red cells collected can be used to save 159 lives!

We had 21 brand new first time donors which is awesome. Some of you may have even had a chance to get a chair massage while you waited or after you donated thanks to Memorial Blood Center.

Please save the date for the annual spring blood drive which will be Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

Used Bike Drive for SPOKES - Nov. 8

Cleaning out your garage or storage room in preparation for winter? Drop off repairable used bikes at the Sabo Center House (624 21st Ave. S.) anytime between 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8. All bikes collected will be donated to SPOKES, a non-profit community bike center serving the Cedar-Riverside, Seward, and Phillips neighborhoods in Minneapolis. SPOKES offers a variety of programs and services to the community with the goal of getting more people biking. SPOKES teaches adults and children how to ride a bike, provides bikes to low income residents, provides a space for anyone to learn how to work on their own bikes, and works to get better bike routes and more bike parking.

General Election - Tues., Nov. 5

Minnesota general elections will be held Tues., Nov. 5. Students who live on the Minneapolis campus may vote in the local precinct elections because we provided a list of resident students to the City of Minneapolis Election Board.

The precinct location for resident students in Minneapolis is at Augsburg.

Life After College Panel on Tuesday, November 5

Come hear from a panel of Augsburg Alumni talking about their experiences following graduation, everything from looking for full-time employment to repaying student loans. Get advice on how to make a successful transition to post-college life.

The Life After College panel will take place on Tuesday, November 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the coffee shop area of Christensen Center. Come for a little while or stay the whole time!

Discount Tickets for Rose Ensemble Concerts at Augsburg

On Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, The Rose Ensemble will present "Portraits of Peru, 1785: Exotic Folksongs and Dances from Trujillo" at Augsburg College. (This is the full evening performance with material from the HFA Convocation.) Both concerts begin at 8 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel, with a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m.

Tickets are normally $25 in advance ($27 at the door), but for Augsburg faculty and staff, The Rose Ensemble is offering a special discount. Augsburg faculty and staff may attend either concert for just $15. You must call the Rose Ensemble offices to reserve these specially priced tickets. This offer will not be honored at the door.

Making Change Happen--Fall Sabo Symposium

This Wednesday, learn how you can help change people's lives though changing public policy.

Speakers will describe how they have worked to improve college access for immigrant youth, create marriage equality, and address climate change. They'll draw on their own successful experiences, and give advice on how you can work to create change.

Senator Scott Dibble, chief author of the Minnesota State Senate marriage equality bill.
Kate Knuth, three-term member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, now heading the Boreas Environmental Leadership Program at the University of Minnesota.
Juventino Meza, Augsburg grad who worked with the Citizens League to help pass the Minnesota Dream Act.

HFA Convo and Luncheon with The Rose Ensemble, 11/13

This year's Humanities and Fine Arts Convocation will feature The Rose Ensemble performing "Portraits of Peru, 1785: Exotic Folksongs and Dances from Trujillo."

Flora, fauna, and folk music mingle throughout this program of popular song and dance from late 18th-century Peru, frozen in the amber of an unlikely source, the Trujillo del Perú Codex. This collection of watercolor paintings was compiled by the local bishop for Spanish King Carlos IV, imaginatively depicting the plants, animals, people, and archeological monuments of this diverse region in northern Peru.

Peruvian and Bolivian music with Indian and African influences—party songs, love songs, and rhythmic sacred hymns—is presented by Rose Ensemble singers, a Baroque band, and an impressive collection of South American percussion instruments. The melodies are memorable, the harmonies catchy, the rhythms syncopated…all setting the stage for what would become present-day, Latin-American popular music!

Bonus: This unique performance features projections of the manuscript illustrations and supertitle translations.

The HFA Convo will take place on Wednesday, November 13, at 10 am, in Hoversten Chapel. Admission is free. A free luncheon with the musicians will follow, featuring a Peruvian menu. Space for the luncheon is limited. Please contact Phil Adamo if you would like to attend: adamo@augsburg.edu

Keeping Track of Auggies

Christensen Center for Vocation: Forgiveness

Mark Tranvik, Director of the Center of the Christensen Center for Vocation and Professor of Religion, presented a three-week series on forgiveness. The class was held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lakeville. The sessions looked at forgiveness in the Bible, Luther's view of forgiveness, and practical issues involving forgiveness.

Global Connections 2013 Photography Fundraiser

Global Connections Project(GCP) 2013 Photography Fundraiser:

Global Connections Project (GCP) 2013 Photography Fundraiser is a fundraiser for the Community Siem Reap service project. Funds and donations will go towards the Siem Reap Community Project to fund for children's uniforms, school supplies, an yearly for the teacher and a hut to hold extra teaching sessions in Cambodia.

The GCP Photography Fundraiser group will be tabling in the Christensen Center Monday(s) and Friday(s) from 9:30 am-10:30 am. Come by to book your photo shoot session and help support us to reach our goal today.
