Public Safety Crime Advisory

Crime Advisory Nov 7th 2013

A variety of personal property thefts have been reported to Public Safety this week. Additionally, Minneapolis Police has put out an advisory regarding neighborhood robberies. Please remember to keep your belongings with you or locked up in your office, your residence, or in the trunk of your vehicle.

A Minneapolis Police Advisory was issued this week in regards to the following incidents that took place OFF campus.

10/26: 12:20 AM, Individual was approached by a group of males who used a weapon to get the victim to hand over his phone. 18xx block of 5th Street.

10/31: 9 PM, A victim was punched by a suspect and her purse taken. 18xx block of 5th Street.

11/03: 1:29AM, Individual walking northbound on Cedar was approached by two males. One suspect punched him to gain access to his wallet.

In all incidents the suspects fled on food and were described as black males between 18 and 25 years old.

Keep the following tips in mind to help prevent crime on campus and keep your belongings safe!

YOU CAN HELP PREVENT CRIME AT AUGSBURG!

- Public Safety Escorts are available from dusk until dawn each day by calling 612-330-1717.
- Walk in well-lit areas and with a friend.
- Cell phones, iPods, and other electronics can be a distraction to you and an attraction to someone watching you. Be alert and keep these items out of sight.
- Don't leave your valuables unattended and unsecured in public places.
- Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.
- Always lock your office even if you will only be gone for a minute or two.
- Always lock your residence room, even when you are present!
- If possible, lock bicycles with a U lock around the frame and any "quick release" tires.
- Be aware of your surroundings and immediately report any suspicious activity or persons to Public Safety Dispatch (612-330-1717 or x1717 from a campus phone) or the Minneapolis Police.

Teaching and Learning

Vann Fellowship Due Tuesday 11/12

Attention Students! If you are interested in the Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics at Mayo Clinic, Augsburg's internal applications are due Tuesday, Nov. 12.

This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants.

Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care

If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

Benefits:
- Lifelong membership in an active and growing network of alumni.
- Meeting other student leaders at the Udall Scholar Orientation
- Up to $5,000 for educational expenses

$30,000 to help fund Graduate Degree

Attention Juniors!

Are you interested in a career in public service?
Do you plan to attend graduate or professional school?
Could you use $30,000 to fund your education?

If so, you may be eligible for the Truman Scholarship, a merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation seeks candidates who have extensive records of public and community service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.

Additional eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and junior standing (or senior standing, but in the third year of college enrollment).

Cuba: Course Preparation Seminar for Fac/Staff

If you are interested in working with CGE to plan an upcoming course in Cuba, consider joining us in June 2014 for a Course Preparation seminar. During this seminar, participants will travel with CGE Academic Director Ann Lutterman-Aguilar to Havana to learn about Cuban infrastructure, meet with local faculty, discuss program logistics (including finances and legalities), explore housing options, meet with potential speakers, and visit organizations you might consider as part of a future course. Traveling to Cuba is a breathtaking experience, but has a unique set of challenges. As such, participating in the Course Preparation seminar helps ensure a more seamless future experience with a student group.

Humanity in Action Fellowship

The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.

After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.

Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.
Applications are due on January 9, 2014.

Pre-Health Internship Opportunity

Internships available for undergraduate students interested in Pre-Health sciences. Students can study abroad, shadow doctors, learn a second language, and give back to the community on the beautiful islands of Canary and Azores. Students can choose to attend up to two of the following summer sessions:

-Summer Session 1: May 18-June 21, 2013
-Summer Session 2: June 22-July 26, 2014
-Summer Session 3: July 27-August 30, 2014

Convocation Daily Schedule Change

On Wednesday, November 13, the Humanities & Fine Arts Convocation will affect the daily class schedule.

The revised schedule will be:
1st Period 8:00-8:50 a.m. (instead of 8:00-9:10)
2nd Period 9:00-9:50 a.m. (instead of 9:20-10:30)
Convocation 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Remaining classes follow regular schedule

Annual Benefit Enrollment Period Now Open

The annual benefit enrollment period will remain open until November 20. This year our enrollment process will be online.

All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment form, even if you plan to maintain the same benefit coverage elections from 2013. Additionally due to enrollment forms being submitted online, no paper forms will be accepted.

Please be advised that open enrollment will close on November 20 at 4:00 p.m. No late submissions will be accepted.

During the information sessions, representatives from HealthPartners, Interactive Wellness, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2014.

Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections.

Spoken word artists and Def Poetics workshop facilitators Sha Cage and E.G. Bailey will be performing some of their original work.
As well students of Augsburg who have been a part of the workshop will perform pieces.

The performances will be in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, in the Foss Center

Annual Trinity Health Fair Sunday

The Annual Trinity Health Fair will be on Sunday November 10 from 11:30 a.m to 1:00 p.m. in the Foss Center Atrium. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to attend.

New this year will be 5 minute hearing screenings and additional health screenings for blood sugar, blood pressure and vision. There will also be free healthy snacks and info on seasonal flu as well as learning to do life saving chest compressions.

The event is FREE and open to the public!
