Course Preparation Seminar in Cuba with CGE

If you have interested in working with CGE to plan an upcoming course in Cuba, consider joining us in June 2014 for a Course Preparation seminar. During this seminar, participants will travel with CGE Academic Director Ann Lutterman-Aguilar to Havana to learn about Cuban infrastructure, meet with local faculty, discuss program logistics (including finances and legalities), explore housing options, meet with potential speakers, and visit organizations you might consider as part of a future course. Traveling to Cuba is a breathtaking experience, but has a unique set of challenges. As such, participating in the Course Preparation seminar helps ensure a more seamless future experience with a student group.

Vann Fellowship Due TODAY

Attention Students! If you are interested in the Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics at Mayo Clinic, Augsburg's internal applications are due TODAY, Nov. 12.

This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants.

Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

The Strommen Center for Meaningful Work invites all students who are interested in the sciences to stop by Suite 100 of the Christensen Center for an event titled Auggies Connect with Employers on Monday, November 18 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Suite 100 of the Christensen Center

Representatives from R & D Systems, Aerotek Scientific, and Pace Analytical Services will be on campus to answer questions on your job or internship search. They will also be doing resume reviews. All are welcome. Informal meet and greet. Stop by and stay for as long as you would like.

OIP Hosts State Dept. Intl. Visitors from Latin America

Augsburg's Office of International Programs (OIP) was invited for the second year in a row to participate in 100,000 STRONG - EXPANDING INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION by hosting a delegation from Latin America on Tuesday, November 12.

These visitors are invited to the United States under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.

The Department of State has outlined the following specific objectives for the project:

- Provide an overview of the U.S. tertiary education sector and the varying functions of universities, community colleges, distance learning and certificate programs, and vocational/technical schools in preparing young people to enter the marketplace;

- Assess U.S. education policy, advocacy, and programs and how educational institutions in the U.S. contribute to the social and economic development of the country;

- Encourage expanding international student exchange programs and developing institutional support for exchanges by establishing international student offices at universities and colleges; and

- Explore possible future collaborations/linkages with participants’ educational institutions.

Annual Benefit Enrollment Period Now Open

The annual benefit enrollment period will remain open until November 20. This year our enrollment process will be online.

All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment form, even if you plan to maintain the same benefit coverage elections from 2013. Additionally due to enrollment forms being submitted online, no paper forms will be accepted.

Please be advised that open enrollment will close on November 20 at 4:00 p.m. No late submissions will be accepted.

During the information sessions, representatives from HealthPartners, Interactive Wellness, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2014.

Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections.

StarDreamers--The Spirit Water People is a 3-part documentary created by filmmaker Sheldon P. Wolfchild. Come join the preview showing of Part 2, "The Doctrine of Discovery," that focuses on a little-known subject traced back to Christopher Columbus’s so-called "discovery" of the lands now commonly known as "the Americas." This doctrine remains the Supreme Law of the Land in the U.S. Come learn the role of this ancient doctrine in our laws, our language, the U.S. governmental system, and its negative effects on Indigenous Peoples today.

This film will be followed by a discussion with 38plus2 director, Sheldon Wolfchild; Birgil Kills- Straight, Lakota elder; and Steven Newcomb, Shawnee-Lenape author and scholar, and the principal person featured in the documentary.

Heritage Day - Nov. 17 with Dr. Vitor Westhelle

The Augsburg College Heritage Day (also known as "Founders Day") is a joint venture of the Christensen Center for Vocation, the Religion Department, and the Office of the President.

This year's Heritage Day lecture will feature Dr. Vitor Westhelle, professor of Systematic Theology at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and the chair of Luther Research at FACULDADES-EST, São Leopoldo, Brazil.

The theme for the night is, "What is the Church called to say about Money, Jobs, and Politics?"

Join us in the East Commons on November 17 at 6:30 p.m. for a dessert reception, followed by Dr. Westhelle's presentation and Q&A from 7 - 8 p.m.

- A Walk From Campus to Neighborhood School: Preservice Teachers' Experiences in a Partner School. Presented by: Elizabeth Ankeny (Augsburg), Jennifer Weber (Cedar Riverside Community School).

-MTLE Task Force Panel also presented at MACTE: James Barnhill, special education teacher at South High School, Minneapolis; Rep. Sondra Erickson, former English teacher; Rep. Barbara Yarusso, freelance science and math tutor; Dr. Christopher Smith, assistant professor, Augsburg; Stephen Hornstein, professor, St. Cloud State University

Joseph Erickson presented at the International Service Learning Research Conference on the research concerning attitude change in service-learning and an invited workshop on how to integrate service-learning into teacher education.
