The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) will no longer be accepting applications for the Academic Year Research Grant. $30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree
Attention Juniors! How would you like $30,000 to help fund your graduate degree?
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive and prestigious federal scholarship granted to U.S. college juniors for demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service. The scholarship is in the amount of $30,000 toward a graduate education. Students must be nominated by their institution and each institution can send four nominations.
Internal Applications are due January 15, 2014
Program Details:
-Interested in being a "change agent," and improving the ways that government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions serve the public.
-Have an interest working in government, education, the nonprofit sector, or the public interest/advocacy sector to improve these conditions.
-Is committed to working in public service after completing a Foundation-funded graduate degree.
-Interested in seeking a master's degree, a doctorate, or a professional degree such as a law degree or a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Master of Education, Master of Public Policy, or Master of International Affairs.
Program Qualifications:
-A U.S. citizen
-A full-time student pursuing a bachelor's degree with junior-level (or senior standing, but in the 3rd year of college enrollment).

Humanity in Action Accepting Applications for 2014
The Humanity in Action Fellowship has brought together international groups of students and young professionals to study minority rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The 2014 programs will begin in Washington, D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place for four weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.
Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams.
After the program, participants join the global alumni network of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows and can take advantage of special professional fellowship opportunities, such as internship programs in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament.
Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013 are eligible to apply.
Applications are due on January 9, 2014.

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care
If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

2014 Vann Fellowship - Mayo Clinic
2014 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics! This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due November 12, 2013.
Program details:
- Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
- 8-10 weeks of full-time research
- $5,000 stipend
- Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants
Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

2014 Annual Benefit Enrollment
All open enrollment materials have been posted to the HR Moodle, http://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodlecommunity/course/view.php?id=329
The annual benefit enrollment period opens Wednesday, November 6 and ends Wednesday, November 20. All forms must be submitted online no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20.
All benefit eligible employees will need to complete the enrollment forms. Benefit eligible faculty and staff, working .750 (3/4) full-time equivalency (FTE) or greater are considered benefit eligible. Enrollment forms will be submitted on-line this year. No paper forms will be accepted.
We strongly encourage all benefit eligible faculty and staff to attend one of the five benefit information sessions. Sessions are scheduled as follows:

ACTC Explores Cost Savings Through Shared Services
For almost 40 years, the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC) - Augsburg, Hamline, Macalester, St. Catherine and St. Thomas - have offered shared academic and administrative programs.
ACTC students and faculty have benefitted from collaborations in areas such as cross-registration for classes, bus service between campuses, art, creative writing, the Women's Studies Program, CityLabs, and the annual Film Festival. ACTC also sponsors numerous operational programs and initiatives in areas such as human resources, safety and security, and purchasing. Taken together, these collaborations save ACTC campuses more than $1 million, collectively, each year.
Building on this history of success, the five ACTC schools are exploring ways to do even more together, particularly through sharing administrative services. The benefits of shared services include improving value, enhancing services, and decreasing costs, thus providing for the reallocation of resources that each campus can redirect to its institutional priorities and mission.
To better understand and evaluate the potential impact of shared services, in-depth exploration is necessary. ACTC will conduct a comprehensive analysis that will indicate whether shared services provide a valuable opportunity.
This analysis will be conducted over the next several months by a team from ACTC supported by the chief financial officers and academic officers at each school. Craig Shafer of Shafer Business Solutions has been retained by ACTC to assist with the project, which is supported by the ACTC presidents.
This team will compile and analyze data from each ACTC institution and report the results to the ACTC Board of Directors, which is made up of the presidents of each of the schools. Staff members at each institution may be asked to provide information to support this effort.
As interim chief financial officer, I will serve as Augsburg's point person in coordinating this comprehensive analysis, working in conjunction with Karen Kaivola, provost and chief academic officer, and the ACTC. Questions about this initiative may be directed to me at rostads@augsburg.edu.
Part-Time Job Opportunity - Great Lakes Loans
Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc., is offering a part-time job opportunity in the Eagan call center that can provide tuition reimbursement for Augsburg College students starting January 2, 2014. Students hired through the "Earn and Learn" program will provide customer service to student loan borrowers, who look to Great Lakes to help them understand their options, solve problems, and stay on track. The new program will not only provide a part-time income to participating students, but will allow them to earn up to $1,800 per year in tuition reimbursement.

General Election - Tues., Nov. 5
Minnesota general elections will be held Tues., Nov. 5. Students who live on the Minneapolis campus may vote in the local precinct elections because we provided a list of resident students to the City of Minneapolis Election Board.
The precinct location for resident students in Minneapolis is at Augsburg.

Film: Stardreamers - The Spirit Water People 11/15
Screening with American Indian director, Sheldon P. Wolfchild. At the start of his career, Wolfchild worked in Hollywood and was featured on Sesame Street. He is a member and former Tribal Chairman of the Lower Sioux Indian Community. Wolfchild researched the history of Dakota people in Minnesota and interviewed elders for 15 years for this documentary film. The film weaves oral and written history and traditional Dakota beliefs together to offer a telling of the Dakota story in a way that the text books he grew up reading never did.
"Refocus the frame: Turning the lens on racism" is a series of powerful film screenings followed by facilitated discussion and thoughtful dialogue

StarDreamers--The Spirit Water People is a 3-part documentary. Come see the preview showing of Part 2, "The Doctrine of Discovery," that focuses on a little-known subject traced back to Christopher Columbus's so-called "discovery" of the lands now commonly known as "the Americas." This doctrine remains the Supreme Law of the Land in the U.S. Come learn the role of this ancient doctrine in our laws, our language, the U.S. governmental system, and its negative effects on Indigenous Peoples today.

Forced by Bernarda, the tyrannical matriarch, into an eight-year mourning period after the death of her husband, the Alba sisters see all of their dreams and deepest desires smothered by their despotic mother's rule. Kept in the house and cut off from the outside world, the sisters live in an asphyxiating atmosphere that drives them against each other in an inevitable path to tragedy.

Simpson Housing Services Inc. helps tons of homeless people get back on their feet and into permanent housing by feeding them and giving them a place to stay 365 days a year!
In 2012, over 3,000 individuals experiencing homelessness received a bed in one of Simpson Housing's four shelters; with the help of Simpson Housing, 486 individuals were moved from shelters into permanent housing!
As you can imagine, the cost for this is large at $30 per person, per night! Simpson Services does great work for the Twin Cities and so we are going to help them out!
Because this is a fundraiser and is costly to put on, the attendance fee for this is $15 if you are wanting dinner and $10 for admission to the silent auction, presentation, and music!

All Saints' Day Chapel Service, Nov. 1
We invite you to a special chapel on Friday, November 1, at 10:40 a.m., when the Augsburg Community celebrates All Saints' Day. On this festival day we remember with thanksgiving those who have died this past year.
During the worship service, the names of those who have gone before us will be sung during the "Litany of the Saints." The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saint's Day celebrates the people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day, together with congregations throughout the world, we remember the faithful who have died this past year.
Our daily chapel service takes place in the Hoversten Chapel, Foss center.

Associate Professors Nancy Rodenborg & Christina Erickson are presenting at the Annual Program Meeting of the Council on Social Work Education in Dallas Texas this week. Between them they present four different papers, panels or faculty development institutes, including:
Rodenborg & Erickson present an administrative workshop: Faculty recruitment: Overcoming cognitive bias and institutional barriers to a diverse professoriate.
With faculty and staff from the University of Michigan's Intergroup Relations Program, Nancy Rodenborg is presenting a three-hour Faculty Development Institute: Intergroup Dialogue Pedagogy and Practice: Promoting Cross-cultural Competence, Awareness and Social Justice.
Nancy Rodenborg is joining a panel with four other faculty from across the nation to present: It Matters-Water and Human Rights: Relevance and Implications for Global Social Work.
Christina Erickson is joining faculty from Catholic University of America, the University of South Florida, University of St Catherine, and the University of St Thomas to present: The Contemporary Landscape in Social Work Licensure: Implications for Education and Practice.
