The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The fourth annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14 to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Registrants are accepted on a first come-first served basis.

Staff Development Series

Session title: Communicating Effectively using (LinkedIn) Technology

In this hands-on session, attendees will learn what LinkedIn is and what it is used for. You'll learn how to use LinkedIn for your own professional development and networking, and have time in the computer lab to create or enhance your profile and understand what considerations to take into account when deciding what information to include on your profile. Attendees will explore how to use LinkedIn to support Augsburg College students indirectly through joining groups and sharing expertise, and directly by connecting, endorsing and writing recommendations. The group also will explore best practices and social media etiquette, how recruiters (like Augsburg!) are using LinkedIn to search for qualified applicants, and how your overall social media and digital footprint is viewed by others.

About the facilitators: Steff Weiss is a social media practitioner who works in Marketing and Communication, and Ana Eliason helps students with tools such as LinkedIn in her work at the Strommen Center.

2013-2014 AugSTEM Applications Available

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars can receive up to $7,000 per year in financial support. Scholars also become a part of a vital STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

The AugSTEM scholar award is designated for students who are within five semesters of graduating. Applicants must be full-time students in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics) with a 3.0 GPA within their major. This award is available for U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need via FAFSA. Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

AugSTEM information packets and application materials can be found at www.augsburg.edu/stem. Applications for the 2013-2014 academic year are due May 9.

TFAPS -- Hybrid Learning Implementation

All faculty are invited to participate in two workshops offered by CTL and IT to support weekend and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14. If you are satisfied with the basic design of your courses, you only need to participate in the Moodle Labs to learn best practices for online learning and how to meet GAAC/AAC requirements for hybrid learning.

If you would like to improve the underlying design of your courses, you will also benefit from the integrated course design workshop.

Prerequisite: Please watch the screencasts in the Overview section of the Course Design Support Site (http://go.augsburg.edu/moodlelab) before coming to these sessions.

Creating an Inclusive Campus - Call for Proposals

Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference
Reimagining Augsburg: Learning, Retention, and Success
Conference Dates: May 22-23
Proposals Due: April 19

This two-day annual conference will be held May 22-23 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session entitled "Reimagining Augsburg: Learning, Retention, and Success." It will combine an inspirational presentation with a working session to envision how we can co-create an inclusive community committed to learning, retention, and success of all members.

As our mission states, "The Augsburg experience is supported by an engaged community, committed to intentional diversity in its life and work." What does it mean to be committed to intentional diversity? It means that we recruit a diverse student body and create an inclusive, supportive learning environment that enables them to succeed. It means that we prepare all students to work collaboratively in a diverse, global environment. Finally, it means that we hire diverse faculty and staff, and create an inclusive, supportive work environment that enables them to be meaningfully involved in the work of Augsburg College. This conference allows us to celebrate what we are doing right and engage in dialogue about how we can continue to improve.

We invite you to design sessions that will engage faculty and staff in conversations about learning, retention, and success at Augsburg; or presentations that will deepen understanding of what is being done to create a more inclusive community. These sessions may focus on facilitating the success of all students, embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum, or developing our community.

Please submit a proposal for a 90-minute session. Provide a title for your session, list of presenters, and a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to ctl@augsburg.edu by April 19.

The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

Register for Called to Lead by Wed., April 10

There is still time to register for the spring Called to Lead seminar! But act soon. The deadline is Wednesday, April 10. See information below.

If you are wondering where you are going in your professional and personal life and feel that you could be doing something more significant, we invite you to explore "Called to Lead," a four-week intensive experience for Augsburg staff, faculty, alumni, and friends of the College. Together we shall explore:

• the joys and challenges of leadership
• leadership grounded in service
• the centered life vs. the myth of a balanced life
• seeing things whole
• developing your own strategic game plan for leadership and life

Join us for four mornings in the spring of 2013 (7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. on April 16, April 23, April 30, and May 7) at Augsburg College and emerge energized and renewed for new challenges in your life.

Facilitators include Professors Tom Morgan, Jack Fortin, and Norma Noonan. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning and the Augsburg Center for Leadership Studies.

Information from AAUP

Colleagues, I am sending these links to information FYI as requested by AAUP. These documents have already been given to the Search Committee and to Faculty Senate (and appear on the Faculty Senate public site).

AAUP would like to disseminate two statements to the whole faculty. The first is a lawyer's review of our governance documents that helps us understand better our faculty rights and responsibilities as they relate to shared governance of the college. We think this document has significant implications for our role in helping to resolve various current concerns, but also for our effective participation in shaping the future of the college. It should be a helpful guide to key aspects of the handbook--both for us and for the administration.

The second document we sent a bit earlier to the Senate. It states the principles and ideals that AAUP members bring to our consideration of the proposals concerning non-tenure-track faculty (NTTF).

We offer these documents as part of the spirited discussion and deliberation we want to encourage as a key aspect of shared governance.

Augsburg has Two Fulbright Winners

Please join us in congratulating Kayla Johnson '13 and Emily Jensen '08 who were recently named Fulbright winners! Fulbright is highly competitive and undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates from around the country apply each year.

Kayla Johnson, a senior biology and mathematics major, was awarded an English Teaching Assistantship in Taiwan. Kayla plans to attend medical school in the future and is interested in learning more about the health care system in Taiwan.

Emily Jensen received her BA from Augsburg in 2008 in international relations and peace and global studies. She has worked extensively in the Minnesota State Senate and House of Representatives, most recently as a Research Director. Emily was awarded an English Teaching Assistantship in the Czech Republic and plans to pursue a Master's degree in social work and public policy when she returns.

We are excited to have two such gifted and motivated individuals represent Augsburg in the Fulbright program.

Are you interested in, or do you know an Augsburg staff member that would like to be nominated for Staff Senate? We are looking to fill two positions. These two positions are two-year terms.

The Augsburg College Staff Senate (ACSS) serves Augsburg College and its staff by providing a forum to foster and promote a positive and meaningful dialogue among staff, faculty, students and administration by advising in decision making processes, by serving as an advocate for Augsburg College staff, by promoting professional development opportunities and by recognition of Augsburg College staff's contributions to furthering and upholding the mission and values of Augsburg College.

Staff Senate is composed of six members who are nominated and elected by their peers, and two at-large members chosen by Staff Senate.

Provost Finalists on Campus

We are pleased to announce that three finalists for the Provost and Chief Academic Officer have been selected and are scheduled to be on campus for interviews during the next several weeks.

We are grateful to our colleagues on the Provost/CAO Search Committee who have committed countless hours over the past several weeks to review the materials from 95 applicants, to pare the pool to 15 and then 8 semi-finalists, and to spend two days interviewing the semi-finalists off-campus. It was a very strong pool of candidates and we are very excited to introduce the finalists to the campus community.

The first candidate to visit campus is Barry Pearson, who currently serves as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Mr. Pearson will be on campus beginning Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Open forums to meet Mr. Pearson have been scheduled for April 10, 11 a.m.-Noon OR 3:30-4:30 p.m. with a brief reception following, in East Commons. Mr. Pearson's CV is available on the Provost Search Committee's public community moodle site.

We will announce the other finalist candidates shortly before their scheduled visits to campus later this month. The search committee will convene after the final candidate visits campus and send its reflections to the President, who will decide on our next academic leader. We urge you to complete the on-line survey that will be made available following candidate visits so that the committee's deliberations can be informed by your perceptions and perspectives.

Salon des Refuses is an annual exhibition that showcases work rejected from the Juried Student Show.

Monica Brondos has created a series of black and white photographs that examine a variety of themes and challenge the notion of black and white photography.
