2013-2014 AugSTEM Applications Available

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars can receive up to $7,000 per year in financial support. Scholars also become a part of a vital STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

The AugSTEM scholar award is designated for students who are within five semesters of graduating. Applicants must be full-time students in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics) with a 3.0 GPA within their major. This award is available for U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need via FAFSA. Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

AugSTEM information packets and application materials can be found at www.augsburg.edu/stem. Applications for the 2013-2014 academic year are due May 9.

The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The fourth annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14 to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

Creating an Inclusive Campus - Call for Proposals

Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference
Reimagining Augsburg: Learning, Retention, and Success
Conference Dates: May 22-23
Proposals Due: April 19

This two-day annual conference will be held May 22-23 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session entitled "Reimagining Augsburg: Learning, Retention, and Success." It will combine a presentation by Dr. Eric Jolly with a working session to envision how we can co-create an inclusive community committed to learning, retention, and success of all members. Dr. Jolly is a member of Augsburg's Board of Regents, President of the Science Museum of Minnesota, and a nationally recognized speaker on issues of inclusiveness.

As our mission states, "The Augsburg experience is supported by an engaged community, committed to intentional diversity in its life and work." What does it mean to be committed to intentional diversity? It means that we recruit a diverse student body and create an inclusive, supportive learning environment that enables them to succeed. It means that we prepare all students to work collaboratively in a diverse, global environment. Finally, it means that we hire diverse faculty and staff, and create an inclusive, supportive work environment that enables them to be meaningfully involved in the work of Augsburg College. This conference allows us to celebrate what we are doing right and engage in dialogue about how we can continue to improve.

We invite you to design sessions that will engage faculty and staff in conversations about learning, retention, and success at Augsburg; or presentations that will deepen understanding of what is being done to create a more inclusive community. These sessions may focus on facilitating the success of all students, embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum, or developing our community.

Please submit a proposal for a 90-minute session. Provide a title for your session, list of presenters, and a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to ctl@augsburg.edu by April 19.

The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education

TFAPS - Hybrid Learning Implementation

All faculty are invited to participate in two workshops offered by CTL and IT to support weekend and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14. If you are satisfied with the basic design of your courses, you only need to participate in the Moodle Labs to learn best practices for online learning and how to meet GAAC/AAC requirements for hybrid learning.

If you would like to improve the underlying design of your courses, you will also benefit from the integrated course design workshop.

Prerequisite: Please watch the screencasts in the Overview section of the Course Design Support Site (http://go.augsburg.edu/moodlelab) before coming to these sessions.

Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning.
The Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning is a hands-on workshop that explores Fink's model for course design, which integrates situational factors, learning goals, learning activities, and assessment. It addresses how to choose face-to-face and online activities to create an engaged learning community, provide direct instruction, and facilitate active, collaborative learning. Future workshops will be held on:

Augsburg Has Two Fulbright Winners

Please join us in congratulating Kayla Johnson '13 and Emily Jensen '08 who were recently named Fulbright winners! Fulbright is highly competitive and undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates from around the country apply each year.

Kayla Johnson, a senior biology and mathematics major, was awarded an English Teaching Assistantship in Taiwan. Kayla plans to attend medical school in the future and is interested in learning more about the health care system in Taiwan.

Emily Jensen received her BA from Augsburg in 2008 in international relations and peace and global studies. She has worked extensively in the Minnesota State Senate and House of Representatives, most recently as a Research Director. Emily was awarded an English Teaching Assistantship in the Czech Republic and plans to pursue a Master's degree in social work and public policy when she returns.

We are excited to have two such gifted and motivated individuals represent Augsburg in the Fulbright program.

Apply to be an AugSem Student Leader

Earn money. Meet people. Gain leadership experience.

AugSem Student Leaders work during the fall semester with incoming first-year Day students and their AugSem faculty advisor to help new students make a good transition to Augsburg. Student Leaders are paid on an hourly basis, complete training in the spring and a few days before fall classes, and work 1-5 hours per week in the fall, depending on their position.

Practice Spanish This Thursday

Take a break and practice your Spanish! Join us for laughs and interesting conversation as we practice speaking in a relaxed and friendly setting. All language levels are welcome.

We meet every Thursday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Riverside Room, 2nd floor of the Christensen Center. Signs will be posted. Drop in at any time and stay for as long as you like. We promise there will be no grammar lessons! You are welcome to bring your lunch.

Focused Conversation: Augsburg Promise

The second Focused Conversation: Augsburg Promise will be Wed., April 10, 12 - 1 p.m., Foss 175.

The Augsburg Promise initiative announced last fall is about improving undergraduate student retention. The Augsburg Promise work takes advantage of and is supported by investments in technology with programs such as Retain, AgileGrad and AgileAdvisor. Implementing these software programs will assist faculty and staff in supporting student academic success.

The Focused Conversation is an opportunity to provide an update on work to date and a calendar for implementation of various systems and processes. There will be time for questions and opportunities for input.

Teatro del Pueblo presents: Lorca in a Green Dress

Lorca in a Green Dress is Cruz's surreal homage to Federico Garcia Lorca, the critically acclaimed poet and dramatist. It's 1936 in Spain, a time of civil war; Lorca finds himself in a state of flux, struggling to defend himself against an inquisition bent on persecuting him for his political beliefs and sexual identity.

Nilo Cruz became the first Latino playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize for his play Anna in the Tropics in 2003. Born in Cuba in 1960, his father was staunchly opposed to the communist government, and the family fled to Miami when he was nine years old. His body of work is often compared to Lorca's for his lyrical writing style. He has held residencies at the McCarter, the Public and the New Theatre in Miami. An alumnus of New Dramatists, Cruz has taught playwriting at Brown University and Yale School of Drama.

Become a Global Citizen

Global Citizens Network hosts coffee hours and movie nights to promote informed, cross-cultural dialogue surrounding important issues affecting our global community. These programs are a continuation of those offered at the Resource Center of the Americas and La Conexión. Friday nights are movie nights and Saturday mornings are coffee hours. The award winning film "The Garden" chronicles the rise and fall of
the largest urban farming project in Los Angeles history through the
eyes of the multi-ethnic, working class communities that embraced
it. We will then be joined by Josh Wise from Minnesota Fair Trade
on the 13th to discuss their local perspective on the fight for fair
trade, local sourcing and the struggle for economic fairness.

The Week of April 14th will be a very special week as the Film series hits the road. Award winning filmmaker Kimberly Bautista will be visiting the Twin Cities to screen her documentary "Justice for My Sister." Based in Guatemala this film is a remarkable story of one woman trying to seek justice for the violent murder of her sister Adela. We will be traveling with Kimberly to University of Minneapolis -Duluth on the 15th, and return for a screening at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul on the 16th followed by a screening at the International Film Festival on the 17th. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting their annual Sneak Peek event for incoming admitted and deposited students on April 10 and 11. Check-in for this event, as well as all other activities, will take place in the Oren Gateway Center lobby. Please refer any families and students to this space.
