CTL Grant Applications Due March 15

Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan's Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The third annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 29 to 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 31. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Those interested in participating should contact Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu). Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

Workshop on Keeping Textbook Costs Down

Fall textbook orders are due March 15, and the Fighting Poverty at Augsburg Group will be holding a workshop to brainstorm and collaborate on how to put together reasonably affordable textbook orders for those classes. Faculty are asked to bring their textbook orders, and students and staff are invited to join the discussion. The workshop will take place in OGC 114 on Mon. 3:30-5.

The Writing Lab Can Help

The Augsburg College Writing Lab is located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk). Last term, tutors in the lab conducted almost 1300 sessions working with students on their writing assignments and they can help you, too. No appointments are taken; just stop by. Hours are as follows:

AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature

AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature

This spring trimester, American Indian Studies is offering AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature for WEC. This class meets Sundays 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.

The course is structured around a number of writers working within a particular theme such as Native Voices of Minnesota, Voices from the Southwest, Poetics and Politics of Native Writing, Women and Power in Native Literature, Urban-Reservation: Homing, and American Indian film-literature adaptation. Students focus on primary texts, comparing and contrasting theme, voice, aesthetic, or cultural emphasis as it shifts or arises across the group of texts. Course cross-lists with English.

(Prereq.: ENL 220 or 221, or a 200-level literature course, or consent of instructor.)

Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:

Engaging all students – These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.
Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum – These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.
Developing our community – This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.

Blended Learning Series

Blended learning has come to mean everything from web-enhanced face-to-face learning to, but not including, courses that are fully online. Integrating online technologies can enhance and enrich learning; online tools also help differentiate instruction. A recent meta-analysis reported by the U.S. Department of Education found that blended learning produced higher performance on learning outcomes than either online or face-to-face learning.

The Blended Learning Series, co-sponsored by IT, is offered from 8:30-10:00 on Third Wednesdays in Lindell 202, and includes the following remaining spring workshop:

Accepting Applications for McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for admission Fall 2012. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academic preparation and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams you with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps you to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, advising in preparation for doctoral degrees. Also, programming assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. You will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible you must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino.

Ecuadorian Consul visits Spanish Conversation Group Thursday

This Thursday the Spanish Conversation group is pleased to welcome Silvia Ontaneda, the Ecuadorian Consul for Minnesota. From noon to 1:00 p.m., Consul Ontaneda will discuss a special program in Ecuador that promotes student leadership through civic participation. All are invited to join us - this presentation will be in English and in Spanish.

Indigenous Bolivian Film Festival

Where Condor Meets Eagle: Indigenous Bolivian and Native American Film Festival and Cultural Exchange is a three-night film festival celebrating Indigenous film, collaborations across national boundaries, and visual storytelling. Come see world class films from Bolivia, Canada, and Minnesota and meet some of the filmmakers, engage in conversation, and enjoy three great evenings for free. Filmmakers from Bolivia will be present, all films in Spanish will be translated, and lovers of film are welcome.

"Grand Entries", which are the start of a dance session are at 1 PM and 6 PM and if you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to come at one of these times to watch a grand entry, however, you are invited and welcome to come and go anytime throughout the day. . .you are welcome to 'check it out' for a short period of time or spend the entire afternoon and evening with us! You can also listen to the MC where he will inform the spectators of opportunity/appropriate times when you can dance with us. We will start the day at 1 PM and end at 9 PM. . . we hope you can come!!

There will also be Craft Vendors, Information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos and frybread for sale. It is expected to be a great time and great opportunity to learn.

Free Cooking Class

Come out to a free cooking class tonight (Wednesday) in the Cafeteria from 7 to 9 pm. On the menu will be Chicken Quinoa and Veggies. We will be making the food for the kids at the Brian Coyle Center and you will also be leaving with some food for yourself (yes I said free food). Also don't forget if you volunteer in any of Thrivent's volunteer opportunities, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a free I-Pad and EVERY volunteer gets a free t-shirt.
