EveryBODY Knows SomeBODY

CCHP invites students, faculty and staff to stop by Christensen Center today from 12:30 - 2 pm to learn more about healthy eating and eating disorders as well as information for helping someone that may have an eating disorder.

This tabling event is another in a series of events this week in recognition of Eating Disorders Awareness Week. The national theme this year is EveryBody Knows SomeBody and across the country various events and activities are being held to increase awareness of eating disorders.

Practice Spanish this Thursday

Are you looking for a place to practice your Spanish? We've got just the thing for you - Spanish conversation group! All language levels are welcome to join us for laughs and interesting conversation as we practice speaking in a relaxed and friendly setting. We meet every Thursday from 11:00-1:00 in the Riverside Room, 2nd fl. of the Christensen Center. Signs will be posted. Drop in at any time and stay for as long as you like. The Pay It Forward Tour (PIF) is a multi-day, multi-city experience engages students in service and leadership, travel to and service in a new city each day, learning about social issues, building lasting relationships, and making a commitment to continued action when they return home. PIF's are a program by Students Today Leaders Forever, STLF, a nation-wide, student-driven service leadership organization. The Augsburg PIF Tour travels to six cities on our way to Washington, D.C., with fun-filled stops including Charleston, West Virginia and Pittsburgh, PA over the course of nine days. It will be a spring break you will always remember. The Tour will fill up fast, so register early!

The cost of this awesome and inclusive trip is only $450, covering all travel and lodging expenses, 2 meals a day, 2 t-shirts and fantastic tourism options as well!

Interfaith Scholar Applications Due Friday

Reminder: The application deadline for the 2012-2013 Interfaith Scholars is this Friday, March 2, 2012.

The Interfaith Scholars are a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through inter-religious dialogue and action. These students earn 1.0 upper division credit in the Religion Department (REL 407/408), and receive a $1,000 scholarship.

This group meets twice monthly for an academic seminar and for interfaith service learning projects. We invite religious believers from a variety of traditions as well as the non-religious to apply in order to converse respectfully with others about what one believes, why it matters and how it propels us to service in the world.

Who is eligible?
- Current students who have completed Religion 100, have an interest in interfaith dialogue, and would be able to participate the entire 2012-2013 academic year.

13th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 13th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards! Students, staff, faculty, alums, and community members are strongly encouraged to nominate their fellow student leaders, student groups, and student group advisers for a variety of awards. People may also nominate themselves or a student group in which they are involved. Winners will be honored at the Augsburg Leadership Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 10th at 4:30 PM.

Scholastic Connections Application Deadline 3/1

ATTENTION UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF COLOR:
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color who serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Six new Scholars will be selected for the program for 2012-13.

Eligibility criteria:
• Current Augsburg student or advanced standing transfer student
• Demonstrated financial need
• Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
• Demonstrated community involvement (on or off campus)
• GPA of 2.5 or higher

Application Process:
• Applicants must complete the following:
• Scholastic Connections Application (due 3/1)
• One letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member (due 3/1)
• A completed financial aid file – a completed FAFSA (due 3/1 in the Enrollment Center)
• An application interview with Cindy Peterson (completion deadline 3/15) – instructions to follow receipt of application

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. Please go to http://web.augsburg.edu/cao to find the locker request form and return it to the Auggie's Nest located on the basement level of Christensen Center.

Come join us tomorrow night to watch and discuss Beauty Mark: Body Image and the Race for Perfection. Created by a former world class tri-athlete, this film explores our culture's beauty and body standards and the price men and women pay to try to reach them, by telling her own story and interviewing others—from inner-city teenagers to models to body-builders to champion athletes.

The film will be followed by a discussion and q & a with Carlin Anderson, PhD, LP. Dr. Anderson is the sports psychologist for the athletics department at the University of Minnesota, and also has extensive eating disorders expertise.

Anderson Hall Social

On Wednesday, March 7th at 8:30 Anderson Hall will be hosting a social to highlight the benefits of living in the Anderson Hall Community. This event will assist students who may be unsure about living in Anderson for the 2012-2013 school year. The Social will include tours of the four different dorm options, games, and snacks. Bring a few friends and your potential roommates.

In light of Housing Expo to be hosted on Tuesday, April 3rd from 3pm-10pm in the East Commons, the Anderson Hall Social will especially be beneficial.

So this morning I got up and went to a Gregorian mass service at Notre Dame! It was very beautiful and interesting. After the service I went walking around the area and ended up at the bookstore Shakespeare and Company and of course, I had to buy a book. Then it was so nice out that I didn't want to go back yet so I went and found a cafe by St. Michel and sat outside drinking coffee and reading my new book. Then on my way home I ran into a little market! There was just about everything there. Fruit, veggies, fish, meat, flowers, bread, scarves, hats, jewelry and much more! I had to buy something, so I got a pain au chocolat.

Why don't I do this every Sunday??

Anyway, classes are going good. Paris finally has warmed up!! Back in the 50's and its been pretty sunny lately :)

Auggies Shine at Speech Meet

Congratulations to four Auggies who were finalists at yesterday's Twin Cities Forensics League speech tournament at Normandale Community College. Finalists in persuasive speaking included Emilee Howe, Alonso JacquePino, and Phoebe Novitsky, who were among the top 6 out of 23 students in the persuasive event. Meanwhile, Marceleen Mosher was a finalist in impromptu speaking, finishing in the top 6 out of 15 students in her event. Besides Augsburg, schools represented at the meet included Gustavus, St. Olaf, Bethel, MSU-Mankato, UW-Eau Claire, Normandale, and South Central Technical College.

I think I've let enough time pass to really admit that I'm in love with Paris. I love the way the bread crackles when it's split apart, the man who plays the accordion in the Duroc metro station every morning on the way to class, and the way that dressing nicely is normal here. Everything I've read about Americans coming to live in Paris has been true so far, including the bad- the frustrations, the seeming lack of logic- and the good- just about everything else. I don't think anyone ever really tells you or prepares you enough for how hard those first few weeks are. You think you're supposed to be happy and excited the entire time, but it's fine if you're not at first! Everything is new and overwhelming and you're in a place where no one knows you (yet!) or understands you. For my first few weeks, I felt like I was pretending to be a Parisian, like I might as well have been wearing a red beret and striped shirt while gnawing on a baguette (Well, the baguette part is actually true), and now I feel like I can pass as the Real Deal to the untrained eye.

I'm starting to have tourists ask me where to find things, even though I want to tell them “It's okay, I'm really just one one of you, too!" I can navigate the city by métro without consulting my city map book every single time. I can go to Franprix (The local grocery store chain where I found peanut butter and salsa! YES!) and bring my own bag for my groceries since they don't offer any. I have yet to figure out how to throw my money back into my wallet and pack my groceries fast enough so I don't slow everyone down and get stared at. I really don't know how they do it so fast. To the other shoppers, I probably look like I have oven mitts for hands, dropping coins everywhere and looking like a real mess.
This weekend, we visited Les Invalides, which is a large Baroque building that was once a hospital (and still partially is, I think) and now houses Napoleon Bonaparte's tomb and the French military museum. It was fascinating to see endless hallways of uniforms and weapons from all different wars and eras. We even saw Napoleon's preserved horse, which is probably one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.

One thing I love about living in Paris is that I can do whatever I want whenever I want to. We went shopping on the Champs-Élysées for a while to find me some warmer clothes (It's still like 25 degrees here) have a coffee and a pastry. Just a typical Saturday, right? I love that I can take line 13 all the way there whenever I have the urge to shop. In the past few days, I've realized that coming here has been the greatest decision I have made so far in my life, and that feels pretty wonderful and marvelous to say.

Baseball Doubleheader POSTPONED

MINNEAPOLIS -- Wednesday's (2/29) Augsburg College baseball doubleheader against the University of Minnesota-Morris at the Metrodome has been postponed due to winter weather conditions. No makeup date has been set yet.

Augsburg will return to the Metrodome on Saturday (3/3) at 10 p.m., facing Edgewood (Wis.).
